Problem with /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libatk-bridge.so after the recent F14 updates

2010-08-30 Thread Joachim Backes
Hi,

having problems with some apps in F14 after having updated this morning:
some apps (vlc, alacarte,...) die with

/usr/bin/python2.7: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libatk-bridge.so: undefined symbol:
g_module_make_resident

or similar.

Anybody sees this too?

As mentioned in other bug reports, this isn't really a bug. There's no way for

Fedora 14 alpha installation scrambles disk ids

2010-08-30 Thread Gerry Tool
I have been trying to install F14 alpha. When I do, the hard drives are not
identified as they have been in the past. I have two hard drives, one with
233GB and one with 149GB. l have a number of partitions on each drive with
operating systems on them. The 233GB has always been identified as hd0 in
the past. F14 alpha insists it is hd1 with the 149GB being hd0. The dev
ids are also messed up. the 233GB has always been sda. Now, F14 evidently
starts the sd numbers with one of the USB devices. I have a multi-card
reader hard-wired inside the box, and it is apparently labelling its
channels as sda - sdd. I have two external USB drives, which until I
unplugged them were being identified as sde, sdf, moving the first (formerly
second) harddrive up to sdg and the old sda to sdh.

If I let the installation proceed, it seems to succeed, but I can not find a
way to get the F14 alpha system to boot using my long-standing boot loader
setup controlled by my current F13 partition. I have tried

title Fedora 14 alpha
rootnoverify (hd0,2)
chainloader +1

using a variety of (hdx,y) attempts, and have also tried several variations
of the grub.conf file in the new F14 alpha configuration.

How can I tame this mess?

Thanks,

Thank you, it doesn't seem to list one. Perhaps there aren't any, or the
XD100 doesn't have critical mass any more.

Not a Fedora question I know -- but is it hard to write a driver for
these devices? Could I author one as an unwashed device driver newbie
and expect to succeed? I am an experienced applications programmer, but
I've never written a device driver before.

If you'd like to test a live image before install, then the nightly composes
is a good place:
http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/

Otherwise you can get the alpha ISOs at:

Where To Get Fedora 14?

2010-08-30 Thread Bob Cochran
I need to set up a slightly old desktop machine for a quite different,
nonsensitive project, and I thought I'd try Fedora 14 on it.

Where can I download a Fedora 14 iso?

I am specifically looking to use it to print to an old Xerox Workcentre
XD100 printer, which is a parallel printer. Can I just plug in the
parallel cable and get Fedora to install the right the printer driver?

Thanks

If the installer requires 512MB it's not sane to expect every hypervisor to
increase the default just in case someone tries to install Fedora. The bug is
in
the (lack of) error checking in the installer.

I assume that you mean the default minimum memory in the installer, and not
that
you would expect the default in qemu to change. That undoubtedly would break
existing systems which don't specify memory size, some of which would run out
of
memory using 4x more for each VM.

 Hi Vaclav

I see that you have read the proven tester instructions at:

and confirmed that you've read and understand them. Please confirm that
you will do your testing in accordance with those? If you have any
questions or problems with the process, please ask and I'll help out! I
also see that you are already familiar with bodhi and fedora-easy-karma.
Once you've replied to confirm the above, I'll sponsor you into the

collect some thoughts (see

http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/design-team/2010-August/003190.html)

  * the wiki page is available for anyone to record thoughts
about the Alpha ... (see
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_14_QA_Retrospective)
  * it's not wiki formatted to my liking yet, but I'll get
to that soon

== F14 Test Days ==

=== Aug 26 - OpenSCAP ===
Owner - kparal
Summary
  * https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2010-08-26_OpenSCAP
  * The test day was quite successful, quite a lot of problems were
identified and they were fixed
  * The new openscap release, which is just waiting for pushing into
updates, should fix all those issues
Next steps...
 1. kparal will send a recap to the list later today

=== Sep 02 - preupgrade ===
Owner - rhe
Summary
  * https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2010-09-02_Preupgrade
  * Wiki page and test cases in place. As rhe mentioned on the list,
testing preupgrade-cli will be included in this event
Next steps...
 1. will get some publicity out for this one as we'll want
to have as many people as possible test
 2. to reach out to rhe for any final wiki modifications
needed

=== Sep 09 - systemd ===
Owner - adamw
Summary
  * https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2010-09-09_Systemd
  * Adamw has the test day mostly set up, he would appreciate review
of the monster test cases (which are heavily based on notting's
systemd 'acceptance criteria')
  * Current systemd package in F-14 stable should resolve most of
issues identified on mailing list

Next steps...
 1. Adamw add a few other test cases, he'll check in with lennart on
what he thinks so far
 2. Viking-Ice intends to complete the systemd debugging page

== Proventester (metrics and sponsor upgrade) ==

Owner - jlaska
Summary
  * Received a request from a proventester to be upgraded to a
sponsor, so that they could mentor others. This got me thinking
whether we have (or need) expectations around becoming a
sponsor.
  * In addition, are we able to gather metrics about proventesters?
Next steps...
 1. Adamw directed jlaska to the policy regarding becoming a
mentor.
 2. Jlaska will elevate mcloaked to sponsor status.
 3. Adamw recalled previously filed metrics ticket
(https://fedorahosted.org/bodhi/ticket/456) and took action to
follow-up at the next meeting

== AutoQA update ==

Owner - wwoods
Summary
  * jskladan finished the "how to write autoqa tests" wiki draft
(see

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Jskladan/Sandbox:Writing_autoqa_tests)
  * wwoods updated the autoqa depcheck tickets to give a bit more
information - including the "make it use mash" ticket (see
https://fedorahosted.org/autoqa/ticket/201)
  * vaschenb updated upgradepath, the new test... now it has
improved output and is automaticaly started with
post-bodhi-update hook
Next steps...
 1. jskladan will replace current wiki page
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Writing_AutoQA_Tests) with

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Jskladan/Sandbox:Writing_autoqa_tests by

 2. wwoods + jskladan continue investigating how best to handle mash
with depcheck test
 3. wwoods also investigating setting up depcheck to handle karma
 4. autoqa team agrees now is a good time to make a new autoqa
release and deploy it. Jlaska will package and deploy
autoqa-0.4.0-1

[Test-Announce] 2010-08-26 OpenSCAP Test Day report

2010-08-30 Thread Kamil Paral
On 26th of August there was an OpenSCAP Test Day [1]. Thanks everyone
for showing up. The attendance was not absolutely great, but it was quite
decent taking into account this software is not widely known and used.

This test day has shown very helpful for OpenSCAP developers since many
problems were discovered. Some of them were reported into bugzilla, here's
the list:

627633 NEW - [abrt] firstaidkit-engine-0.2.12-1.fc14: raise: Process
/usr/bin/python was killed by signal 6 (SIGABRT)
627600 NEW - Set net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects for Hosts and Routers fails
627674 NEW - Failures on F13
565691 ASSIGNED - file probe eats too much memory even for small file lists
627488 CLOSED RAWHIDE - buffer overflow detected in xccdf_item_to_dom

Others were communicated over IRC, posted as wiki comments or put onto
fpaste. The soon-to-be-available OpenSCAP 0.6.2 version should address most
of those shortcomings. Developers also learnt an important lesson about
memory requirements of this software in different software setups, because
it caused problems on many computers.

Thanks developers for actively solving problems and posting fixed versions
and testers for helping to improve this upcoming Fedora 14 feature.

See you on the next test day,
Kamil Paral

Note that you probably want to limit images to 4 GiB so that they can be
downloaded to FAT file systems. That's a bit of a hit to DVDs, but will
probably make up for it in saved aggravation.

The Spins SIG current policy is that live images for which we produce ISOs
need to be less than 4 GiB.

not sure if it is a good idea - if you forget to specify the
amount, the case of virtual machine not running due to not enough
memory seems to me a bit better than the case of your physical
hardware thrashing and OOM killer firing processes just because
QEMU ate the last free bits ...

once upon a time, a bugreport (RFE) existed for the installer to
show a big fat warning about not enough memory, which would lead
the user to check the virtual machine settings in this case ...
wonder where it disappeared, can't find it right now :-(

You may also want to consider using virt-install (command line) or
virt-manager (gui) for creating new VMs, since those are also Fedora
packages that attempt to make this easier.

I know that virt-manager has a 512MB default, but am not sure whether
virt-install has the same default as qemu, or whether this warrants a
bug report for both qemu and virt-install.

New BugZapper Introduction

2010-08-30 Thread Drew Boswell
Hi, I've been using fedora for a while now and want to contribute, I'm
looking forward to helping out in any way possible with the fedora
bugzappers team. My name Is Andrew, I am bilingual in french and english and
live in Edinburgh Scotland. I'm currently studying computer science at the
momen.

My experience in Fedora is mainly of programming in C or Java, however I
have used (lex/yacc) before as well as some graphic design. I would be
please to work in any area really.

My IRC nick is kendoka1401. I would like to help in any area that needs it,
however I think I will need some help to get started with triaging as I am
new to this, however I'm a quick study so no worries!

Thanks,

Andrew B.

This is unlikely to work. I suggest to append "-m 512" to the start-up
options in order to enable 512 MB of system memory. QEMU default value
is 128 MB of system memory.

I would like to help regarding i18n/l10n test cases.
for Asian Languages, we need to add few steps, if user is using boot.iso
or network install, then Stage I (anaconda) installer, Asian languages are
using English text and Stage II, it starts with selected language. Keymap
need to keep in English, default is English.

I'm always defeated by that when it asks for my redhat bugzilla
password which is not stored in my brain, but in an encrypted
file in another partition of the same system I'm currently
installing on :-). It would be nice if it could save up the
bugzilla somewhere and send me mail about providing a good
password later when I can find it.

F14 network problem

2010-08-30 Thread Henk Breimer
Hi,
After install and several updates F14-alpha performs reasonably.
When I reboot, network times-out.
In dmesg I find: "no IPv6 routers present."

I still had a 13-kernel in place. Using that, I could work without
problems. Lately however this kernel times out with "cannot mount
cgroups"

This morning i removed and reinstalled a F14 kernel. After this I coukd
boot and get network again. rebooting: time-out again, no network

Man's, RTFM and googling gave no hint

Does sombody recognise this and give me a hint?

Regards
Henk

Apologies for the delay. I like the above proposed additions, and their
recommended milestone.

I was about to suggest combining the first criteria with the existing
Alpha criteria "The installer must be able to report failures to
Bugzilla, with appropriate information included". I like combining them
from a KISS standpoint. However, I think there is value in requiring
that the installer be able to submit bug reports directly into bugzilla
for the Alpha, and all subsequent milestones. That's the first contact
most testers will have with Fedora, and to me, it's tremendously
valuable to have it as easy as possible to receive good bug reports
(including failure logs etc...). In summary: In addition to your
proposed Alpha addition, keep the existing Alpha installer bug reporting
criteria as well.

I tweaked the Alpha criteria slightly to add a bit more detail around
expectations. Thoughts?
