Yeap, I tested it here and the problem happens with the Adwaita theme.
With Clearlooks it's works as expected.

I'm using the fallback mode too.

It seemed that even if you used DVD.iso to create the bootable USB, the
USB still acted as a netinst.iso without a usable package repo. Did you
use UNetBootin on previous releases for DVD install? From its
website[1], I found that UNetBootin only supports Live CD and Net
install for USB, but no DVD.

Requiring the network is expected for a net install. As a workaround, if
you can't connect to internet during install, you can input 'askmethod'
as kernel parameter. When prompted, select Hard drive as your
installation source. Then select the disk partition that houses your DVD
iso image.

Fallback mode is Metacity, the same window manager that we've been using.
The code changed very little during the 3.x cycle so if there's a new bug
related to this the most likely culprit is the window theme.

I already explained how to remove launchers from fallback mode the first
time you asked. If you have a problem with my recommendation, reply to that
thread. Do not reply to this thread.

This is the third time you've asked this question on this mailing list in as
many days. Do not repeat yourself again.

Fall back mode and launchers in the panel

2011-05-08 Thread Leslie S Satenstein
In non fall back mode, one cannot put favourites launchers in the panel. They
go on the side, which consumes a lot of real-estate.
In the graphics-off mode, the panel is activated, but once a launcher is copied
to it, the launcher cannot be removed.

This problem and the inability to relocate the clock, etc, are probably part of
the teething problem

By the way, Unity in graphics-on mode handles multiple desktops much better
than does Gnome 3 in graphics-on mode. (I would say infinitely better).

Titlebar text missing in shade mode

2011-05-08 Thread Richard England
After discovering I needed "tweak tool" (gnome-tweak-tool*rpm) to make
the window shade (aka shade mode) work I discovered that when a windows
is "shaeded" the titlebar information disappears. I use this
extensively to move between several windows on a screen.

Has any one else noticed that the title bar is blank in "shade" mode?
Who/where/how do I report this?

Spicy f15

2011-05-08 Thread Tom Horsley
I was previously running spice in f14 with a silly wrapper
script to swap out the VNC video args and swap in the
spice args when invoking qemu. I wondered how difficult
it was going to be to transform the machine definition
to use the native spice support in the new libvirt,
but it turned out to be quite easy: I defined a dummy
KVM, telling virt-manager it was Windows XP and editing
the attributes prior to initial boot to enable virtio
and spice, then I let it boot up, killed it, and
dumped the xml to compare with my old xml. A little bit
of editing and adjusting pci slot definitions so as not
to upset the windows machine, and it booted up just fine.
Didn't even bring up the new hardware wizard. And now
it is safe to open the machines from virt-manager,
don't have to manually run the spice client anymore.

So it looks as if I won't have any problems porting
my KVMs from f14 to f15 (which is always good to
verify before actually making the jump :-).

The 8xx blacklist was a *hardware* blacklist, not a driver. The hardware is
not capable of running any composted desktop correctly.

I'm afraid not. The gnome-screensaver-preferences application has gone
in F15. I think the idea is to have stuff like this in the System
Settings application rather than the System menu. Some preferences seem
not to have made the transition.

Is this in fallback mode? I only tried it briefly using the Beta Live CD.
I was unable to get launchers in the panel to work properly. Reported as
Bugzilla #697306.

to be honest i was looking for a long term solution without disabling the

considering that (at least) most of the problems i had with intel i also had
with nouveau. what's the next driver to be blacklisted, i wonder?

gnome-shell-flippery...

2011-05-08 Thread Rob Healey
Dear Ron:

I totally love the new Gnome 3 and its shell, but there are still some
things that I do like from Gnome 2...

I have downloaded your new gnome-shell-extensions and I love the new panel
bar, but I would rsather have the notification area to be in the bottom
right corner of the screen!

Great work, and thank you for making these available to everyone! I would
also submit them upstream, so that I could have them and get them easier if
I ever dump my computer and start again!

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

I've written a few extensions to make the GNOME Shell user experience a
bit more like that of GNOME 2.

  Move the clock towards the right of the panel;

  Place launchers for favourite applications on the panel;

  Replace the Activities button with an Applications menu;

  Disable dynamic workspaces.

Some notes and a tar file can be found here:

Do you mean the System menu and not Applications->System Tools? At least
that's what I've noticed. I've got F15 64bit installed in virtualbox and
apparently the VB video driver is not compatible with Gnome 3 or I have
something set wrong. Either way I have no System menu on the top panel.

GNOME Shell frippery for grumpy old stick-in-the-muds Fedora 15 64Bit

2011-05-08 Thread Leslie S Satenstein

Good morning Rahul and Ron

I appreciate moving the clock to the right.  Actually an excellent option.
With fall back, (graphics off)  I am not sure if I am the only one having this
problem.

I see that you were able to activate System Tools.  This menu entry does not
appear in the fallback mode.  It does appear in alacarte (Menu editor), along
with a preferences menu. But there are many items in the preferences menu that
are not available in Fallback mode.  In particular,   I did not find gnome
screensaver preferences.  Does your patch fix this problem?

Here is one Problem I have been facing.  Favourite applications on the panel,
once  placed,  are unable to be removed. I have 2 copies of FreeCell (during
System Updates, I play FreeCell) and I cannot remove either launcher from the
panel.

Looks great, it would be nice to see something like this get included
in the next build, I think I would actually use gnome again if this
was some kind of classic switch you could toggle..

My PC has i865 graphics. Two weeks ago I did a short test of Gnome 3
(about half an hour) and it looked all right. I could not tell if it
was faster or slower than Gnome 2 or KDE. I am not sure if it is
really necessary to blacklist all Intel 8xx, but maybe the developer
has his reasons.

What about "yum downgrade gnome-session" ? If that works then you
could disable updates for that package in yum.conf.

Seems interesting. You might want to consider submitting these
extensions upstream

https://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Extensions

Just file a bug report with a patch for each of these extensions.
There is already one submitted for the app menu. So that's probably
just duplicated work
