guide me

2014-04-16 Thread Joseph Pesco
Shailendra,Welcome, I'm semi-new to Fedora, and totally new to this list,
therefore we have something in common. (I make many errors! Sometimes
intentially. Perhaps we differ in this regard :) Observation has guided me
while introducing myself to Fedora this past year. For instance, as an
observation if this is a virtual office we are standing in a hallway maybe just
a floor, or two below the executive suite, and that is not to say that these
folks in the offices, and cubicles on this floor aren't talented, and creative.
It is simply to say that here virtual ping pong balls flying over head are more
likely than upstairs, and that this is a good place to be standing.I sip on my
coffee now... I always have a cup of coffee in hand, and am known for putting
out fires. If required to I can use the coffee to put out a fire. Right? I'm
using many to many words.I downloaded the robotics live 20140415 image and
will use it once I hit send. There are other targeted images, some h
ave been added more recently than the robotics spin, and any of these might be
a good place to research the fields that interest you. I look up bugs I see in
Bugzilla all the time. If something interests you read the code. Reading code
is a great way to learn. If this post looks funny it is because I'm using my
email service's webmail client while reading the list archive in another
browser window. Joe

kernel-3.15 series fail to load gnome desktop

2014-04-16 Thread Clyde E. Kunkel
With all of the kernels in the rawhide 3.15 series so far the gnome
desktop fails to load. Kernels in the 3.14 series are fine.

All I can see is that the X server seems to start (ps -A | grep Xorg
returns a PID), but the Xorg.0.log is empty. No obvious failures in
journalctl -xb. I see gdm is started, but at this point lots of disk
activity but then nothing. c-a-f2 gets me to tty and I can login. Top
looks normal for a non-gnome session. Killing X sometimes brings up
the GDM login, but after entering password, just a blank screen and the
Xorg log file is still empty.

Have tried every 3.15 kernel so far without luck.

I don't see any obvious bz, and would be happy to enter one, but don't
know what information should be included.

Any help appreciated.

TIA

Re: kernel-3.15 series fail to load gnome desktop

2014-04-16 Thread Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX

I tend to avoid the current Gnome, but was able to get a Gnome desktop
with Tuesday's Rawhide 3.15 rc1 with a bit of prodding. I don't think
Gnome works on wayland yet.

Wayland? Is it on by default with 3.15 kernels? My graphics card is an
ATI RV 600. I saw where wayland doesn't work with those cards yet.
How do we turn off wayland and use plain old X.

I'm wondering if this is hardware-specific, as I'm running an up to date
rawhide system with the 3.15 kernel on my laptop, and it's running just
fine. (The laptop has Intel graphics, for what it's worth.)

new f19/f20 images

2014-04-16 Thread Kevin Fenzi
Greetings.

We have new f19/f20 images with openssl updated, and they appear to be
default/live already.

Were we waiting for some testing runs on them before announcing?
(Which we should have done before making them live, imho)

Or did that already happen?

Did we want to do a full test cycle on them?
Or just openssl related actions?

Thanks,

kevin

Well, just to interject another data point, I appear to be having
similar issues that are intermittent and/or hardware related. Booting
Rawhide sometimes seems to result in a black screen after X should start
up (but the system is running and ssh-accessible), but sometimes seems
to work fine. Can't swear to it, but it seems to work more than it fails
on my desktop (x86-64, NVIDIA graphics) and fail more than it works on
my tablet (the fedlet, i386, Intel graphics). Haven't really been able
to spot a particular cause yet.

The dracut that was suggested to be problematic in the Kernels

Kevin,

I threw together a sanity-check matrix [0] for testing the images - and
am just now getting to running through some tests. As for waiting for
the announcement - I don't know anything about waiting for testing
beforehand. I had thought it was already announced. :-/

First big gotcha...

With at least the x86_64 kde live image... if you install, you get the
kernel-debug as default boot entry.

Not sure if this is all live images, or what is causing it, but it
seems pretty bad. ;(

Thanks to bitlord for spotting this!

Huh?

Since when do we do something like this? Sounds like an over reaction to me.
Installing (security) updates is the first thing you should do after
installing anyway and besides who decided this and when?
What are the criteria for doing updated images?

I haven't had gdm display anything for the last several kernel updates ,
but I'm not convinced the kernel is at fault as older ones stopped gdm from
working too.

GDM *thinks* it is working - `journalctl -u gdm` is where you can find the
Xorg log output these days - but the vterm is black. Lightdm and sddm
display, though poorly, and neither produce a working gnome session.

No one thing I've poked at so far appeared to be the cause, so I haven't
complained. Good to know it is not just me ;)

GDM *thinks* it is working - `journalctl -u gdm` is where you can

Lightdm and sddm display, though poorly, and neither produce a

Why? What does plymouth have to do with the problem? I don't have RHGB

Not sure if this is all live images, or what is causing it, but it
 seems pretty bad. ;(

Thanks to bitlord for spotting this!

I saw this with the XFCE spin, but forgot to report it :(

What about sound? Does it work with 3-15 kernels?

Your issue with sound is most likely to be device-specific.

Can't answer about sound as I was working on other stuff.
Then I made the mistake of installing today's Rawhide on it.
Today's Rawhide is back to locking up before getting to the
desktop. Bit of a dissappointment. Better luck tomorrow.
