The group code in yum does not track 'arch' as a variable for packages.
It could be changed to do so, in theory, but it doesn't now.

If having arch-specific packages there listed as 'mandatory' is causing
problems, they should be switched to 'default' in the interim.

2013-09-18 Thread Richard Ryniker
>No, they're arch-specific. (geode is 32-bit x86, omap is ARM.)

That makes sense. Should yum understand this better? I mean, should the
group list specify architecture dependencies: some packages are needed
for one architecture, others needed for a different architecture?

As things stand, I do not know how to (easily) distinguish cases such as
those Rex Dieter fixed, which had missing packages due to incorrect
names, from cases where a listed Mandatory Package is not used for the
current architecture.

From the yum man page:

Groups are marked as "installed" if all mandatory packages are installed,
or if a group doesn't have any mandatory packages then it is installed if
any of the optional or default package are installed (when not in
  group_command=objects mode).

It looks like yum will misunderstand a case like xorg-x11-drv-geode (not
applicable for x86_64 architecture) and report that
kde-desktop-envorinment is not installed because it requires base-x, for
which xorg-x11-drv-geode is a Mandatory Package.

This starts to look like my original complaint, where I thought
kde-desktop-envorinment (aka 'KDE Plasma Workspaces') had been installed,
but yum did not list it as an installed group.

Bill, do you think there is a bug here, a documentation error (or words
that could be improved), or am I simply barking up the wrong tree?

No, they're arch-specific. (geode is 32-bit x86, omap is ARM.)

I do not know for sure, but it's entirely possible that installing when
there was both the group and the environment with the same name could have
left your system in an inconsistent state. One of the yum developers might
be able to say for sure.

OK, I renamed the one matching kde-desktop to just "KDE", to match others
like "Gnome", "Xfce".

Hopefully this will avoid any wierdness.

I presume you mean this is a repository problem. I tried "yum clean all"
and that did not help, even though I understand this will reload all
metadata (like group information) from the repository.

Or do you mean I may have created this state by an attempt to install
kde-desktop-environment when it was already installed? I think at
worst that would tell me there is nothing to do; it should not create
duplicate name problems.

I looked at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/YumGroupsAsObjects but
do not think that is relevant.

I thought about an attempt to remove the kde-desktop-environment then
re-install it, but this is not something I need to fix: whether that
made the situation better or worse, it probably becomes more difficult
to learn just what happened to create this state. If someone thinks
remove/re-install could provide useful information, I should be happy to
try it.

There is both a group and environment with:

  KDE Plasma Workspaces

One of them needs renamed, or things will be weird.

Perhaps this is due to:

Perhaps a 'yum group mark-remove' on the group and then install it
again will bring it in?
