I've installed MikKTeX-2.9 and the relevant packages on Win 7 several
times and everything works. Did you install MikTeX-2.9?

yes, I installed the 64bit version

 Did you fully
update using the update wizard *twice*, both as administrator and, if
 necessary, as a user?

I repeated update both for user and adminstrator onesmore and got the message
that no more updates are available.

Did you install the pmx and m-tx packages using

yes, I did. Now pmx2pdf is found but no pmxab and prepmx after typing pmx2pdf
barsant and m-tx netfirst.

The directory for executables is \MiKTeX2.9\miktex\bin\x64
the package manager? Why did you execute pmx barsant, which *isn't* in
 the instructions?

I just tried it to see what will happen. pmx is in the bin-directory

Ah. I don't have a 64bit Windows.

Please look in \MiKTeX2.9\miktex\bin\x64; are pmxab and prepmx there?

If they are, the problem is likely the value of the PATH variable.

 | |As a steady user of PMX, I often make use of the PMX history record (a

 | |
 | |Where is that now ? or is it no longer available ??
 |
 | Do you mean
 |
 | http://icking-music-archive.org/software/pmx/pmxbeta.html
 |
 | It's now linked to under Betas.
 |
 | *Nothing* has been removed from the archive. But some documents no
 | longer have references on the index page. If necessary, revert to the
 | old index page, accessible under Archive. I'm in the process of setting
 | up a Google custom site search tool for the archive.
 |
 |Thanks for the quick answer. I still find the link to Betas a
 |bit roundabout;

roundabout? On the old page, you had scroll down and do a sequential
search to find the relevant reference. You now can click on the entry
in the Table of Contents and be taken directly there. Most people would
say that's an improvement, but perhaps not if you're used to the old
page and know exactly where to find something on it. But the old page
is still there if you prefer it. (But I won't be updating it in the
future.)

The Google search box is now installed. The direct link to the document
in the archive is the first result if you search for pmxbeta.html.

 |but as this is still a 'work in progress', I'll wait with further
 |comments until your essentially done.

I think I *am* essentially done. Because the web pages were changing
often yesterday, be sure to refresh to make sure you're getting the
most recent versions. If you get internet via a satellite, you may
have to wait until their caches are updated; because of the inevitable
end-to-end transfer delays, satellite ISPs use aggressive caching to
improve the perception of speed.
