I solved it by removing and reinstalling all texlive packages in my
Debian Sid system. Now the traditional way also seems to work.

Thanks all! The problem seems to be solved once I removed and then
installed again all packages related to texlive, texlive-music
included.

Thank you dear friends for your kind help.

Rodolfo

P.S.: Augustin, yes, dear old good xdvi did render the dvi file
despite the font problem. ;-) Is the bug about gv hopefully be soon
fixed?

Thanks, well, texlive-music is installed, and dvips output looks all
right so it does not seem to lack any font. I'm running Unstable too.
The problem occurred just after upgrading and since then my printer
won't work either and neither the application "gv" to read PS files...

My DVI output is also OK, so the problem is created in the step DVI -> PS.

Thanks. MusiXTeX should perhaps be implemented to apply that by
default when breaking line, because that's the convention in music
typesetting: otherwise the meter change will run the risk not be
clearly readable e.g. during instrumental execution.

Thanks indeed Don and Jean-Pierre: in both your examples though it
seems to me that you force break whereas what I'm looking for is a way
- if any - to tell TeX to add the meter change also on previous staff
*only* if break ever occur but leave everything as normal *if* instead
that break does not occur according to TeX's free choice in that real
moment...

[Tex-music] MusiXTeX: changes at the end of a system

2022-05-21 Thread Rodolfo Medina
Hi all...

In MusiXTeX code: I usually change meter with, e.g.,

\generalmeter{\meterfrac{3}{4}}%
\changecontext%

just after the \enotes command; but I wish, in case of a system break,
that the change occurred not only at the start of the new system but
also at the end of the previous one, like a sort of an alert for the
reader. How should I modify the above stuff in order to do so? In
the manual I coudn't find any answer: Section 15.5 is titled "Changes
at the end of a system" but then does not explain it.

Thanks for any help.

by \ibl), whereas it is above it. How can achieve what I want?

Thanks for any help.

Hi, Don:

that's what I do in raw MusiXTeX:

Unfortunately the placement is not precise as shows test3.tex.

Rainer's example seems to be precise in placement, and besides has the
advantage that in \setlyrics the items don't need to be equal to the number of
notes they span.

Two issues though: suppose I have a piano score i.e. two staves per one
instrument; and suppose that I want to repeat the crescendo in another place of
the score: I get error as shown in test2.tex.

Please still help.

It still remains quite complicated and personally I think that in future
versions of MusiXTeX a special simple command should be dedicated to that sort
of `dashed' crescendo which is quite a lot used.

Thanks,
Rodolfo

The following minimal attached example, to be processed with simply

 $ tex test
 $ musixflx test
 $ tex test

seems to do quite a little what I want except that I don't manage to start the
crescendo exactly where I want: suppose I want it to start in the middle of the
measure: I don't manage to do that. It *will* start just at the beginning of
measure. Please help.

Yes, I mean `cresc.' followed by sort of underscores, or hyphens. P.4 of

I don't see in the MusiXTeX manual the `dotted' crescendo, something like that:

Mine are:

 This is musixtex.lua version 0.21.
 This is PMX, Version 2.94 , 17 Mar 20

I had looked at PMX manual, where half note tremolos are implemented and
illustrated with examples, as you say:

What is it meant by unmeasured tremolo? Unbeamed?

Thank you, Don. In Kreisleriana Op.16 n.8:

https://imslp.simssa.ca/files/imglnks/usimg/9/9f/IMSLP70919-PMLP02821-Schumann--Kreisleriana-Op16--Ed-B%26H.pdf

at the bottom of p.28 of the PDF document (p.29 of the score) Schumann switches
from 6/8 tempo to 2/4 only in the left hand whereas in the right hand there
remains 6/8. I suppose PMX can't handle different times in different staves,
so that could be achieved with a 2/4 in both hands and triplets in the right
hand. Can you see it? They are staff-crossing 8ths triplets with two 16ths (a
rest and a pitch) inside them. Possible to have this with PMX?

Hi, Don, hi all...

In a tuplet, if I try to use the expression `j]', PMX complains that

So, this means it is not possible, in PMX, to have cross-stave tuplets?

All right, I'll definitely do as you suggest... Anyway, it is true that the
vertical extent of \(de)crescendo is unpredictable, but such vertical extent
develops itself around a particular and constant central line that should be
put in the middle of staff by \zmidstaff. I'll use \zcharnote anyway...

Thank you, Bob, I'm learning now what you say, but on p.53 of my copy of

[Tex-music] Middle of staff?

Dear all,

in the following basic example:

, to be processed with simply `tex file', it is evident that the \crescendo is
not at all vertically at the middle of the staff although it is within the
\zmidstaff macro: in faith, it is a little below. Why?

The problem is in bar 184... I've been trying to fix it but don't manage to.
In-line TeX should not be a problem for me, nay my final purpose is just the
TeX file, so it should be ok. If you friends out there manage to fix that
damned measure 184, I'll be glad: I wish to add this score to my MusiXTeX
collection...

[Tex-music] Please help with PMX file

2020-10-21 Thread Rodolfo Medina
Hi all...

I'm attaching a PMX file that I'm trying to process with: `musixtex file' but
there come too difficult errors for me to solve I'm afraid... Particularly
about staff-crossing beams. The file comes from a previous XML -> PMX
convertion with Dieter's fantastic XML2PMX.

Pleae help whoever can, thanks in advance.

Dear greetings,

Yes, it worked, but I had to add a line: after line 34 I had to add the
following line 35:

 rb2 /

Besides, I had to change the file name from The_Entertainer.xml to
TheEntertainer.xml. Besides, in TheEntertainer.tex, there are the `undefined
control sequences' Idecresc and Tcresc which are not present in musixtex.tex
nor in pmx.tex... Where do they come from...?

Maybe the new PMX/MusiXTeX repository could work `from now on' for new
submissions, and the old ones already present in IMSLP could gradually, one at

Hi, Dieter:

an alternative could be to simply modify the score (e.g. deleting that trill
and replacing it with a simpler notation of it) via Musescore, and then
exporting the result to MusicXML format...

[Tex-music] MusiXTeX: system break problem

2019-06-17 Thread Rodolfo Medina
Hi all.

I'm attaching a MusiXTeX example with overfull hbox at system break. I wonder
why TeX doesn't break at the previous bar... It is allowed to... Please help
whoever can. Process with simply: `tex test; musixflx test; tex test'; or
also: `musixtex test'.

Thanks,

[Tex-music] XML2PMX: no time signature

2019-06-17 Thread Rodolfo Medina
Hi, Dieter, hi all.

I'm experimenting that XML2PMX gives error when processing MusicXML files
without time signature. I'm reporting two two examples, taken from here:

 http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/input/regression/musicxml/collated-files.html

Both examples are correctly opened by Musescore, so they appear to be regular.

first example:

`top' shows that more than 80% of memory is engaged by XML2PMX, and about 10%
of CPU.

2019-06-05 Thread Rodolfo Medina
Hi, Dieter, hi all.

When I run XML2PMX from my 9 years old Acer One, with Debian Linux as operating
system, on any MusicXML file, it takes several minutes for the file to be
processed, and meanwhile the PC sticks on any other application. Once
finished, it takes another some minutes for the machine to get back normal
again. This does not happen running MusiXTeX even on large PMX or TeX files.
Is that normal, and why does that happen? Is there anything I can do about it,
to improve and accelerate the run? On my new Lenovo desktop, on the contrary,
everything is fine and fast, immediate the run. I've been using that small PC
when travellling, and, if so, I'm afraid the moment has come to say goodbye to
it...

Actually, PDFtoMusic and Sharpeye complete themselves one another, as the first
does not deal with PDF scores coming from scanning, whereas the second one
needs its input TIFF image to be the result of a scanning... From this point
of view, Sharpeye is more general and would have more possibilities...
although in my experience PDFtoMusic is more clever...

A direct translation MusicXML <-> MusiXTeX would also be very interesting...
The two languages seem to be quite similar in some way...

[Tex-music] Expanding definition of \shlft

Hi all.

In pmx.tex there's the following definition:

Now, in the below MusiXTeX example, I expanded that definition obtaining
strangely a different result from the command itself... Why?

Thanks for any help,

[Tex-music] Change meter at end of system

2019-05-21 Thread Rodolfo Medina
On p.77 of MusiXTeX manual (v. 1.27, Dec 22 2017) there's the subsection titled
`Changes at the end of a system' but then it closes soon without explaining how
to do that... Am I missing some other place of the manual?

[Tex-music] PDFtoMusic

2019-05-21 Thread Rodolfo Medina
Dear all,

I'm very impressed by this tool:

 http://www.myriad-online.com

that converts PDF music scores into MusicXML format. It does not need
scanning, and in these first tests I'm doing, it seems to me better than
Sharpeye. Then from MusicXML to PMX and MusiXTeX, thanks to other tools like
XML2PMX and PMX itself (and of course MusiXTeX itself), we already have our
way... Really interesting and passioning this matter, a big one no doubt, of
the application of, and translation between, different languages of electronic
music writing.

Cheers,

Yes, thanks... The definition for dots moving:

\global\let\C@Psave\C@Point%
\def\PMXpt#1#2#3{\ifodd\n@i\else\raise\internote\fi%
\hbox{\raise#1\internote\hbox{\kern#2\qn@width\musixchar#3\kernm#2\qn@width}}%

Hi...

Is it possible, in MusiXTeX code, to move a note's dot a little right, left, up
or down such as PMX does? In MusiXTeX manual, on p.26, I see \lpt and \lppt to
lower the dot but nothing else.

[Tex-music] PMX: full-bar rest not centered

2019-05-19 Thread Rodolfo Medina
Hi, Don, hi all.

In the attached test file the full-bar pause `rp' should be centered according
to PMX manual p.10 but it isn't. Besides, if in place of `rp' I put `r0', the
rest is a bit shifted rightwards. But I don't see any `r0' command in the
manual...

These are my first steps in using PMX, will you please excuse my
inexperience...

Please help

thanks
