of stem at all. Don't ask me why!
And I guess line 710 you mean 'insieme'.

Hello All,
I can compile e.g. the example below, as well as adagio.tex and a
number of other complex examples from WIMA, but cannot compile the
simple example in section 1.2 of the Musixtex manual, v. T114 p. 3
(after adding \input musixtex at the beginning).
It won't recognize the \begin{music} command. If I comment this
command out, it won't recognize the \setstaffs command.
Seems like a very basic error and that something major is missing,
although I downloaded all the recommended files.
[I am trying to install the system on an iMac, Mac OS X v. 10.5.7 (the
latest), compiling with Plain Tex in Texshop (v. 2.26, also the
latest) and a rank beginner with musixtex.]
Any help much appreciated.

solution. It's not simply a problem with the local MusiXTeX source for the
extract; it's interacting with something else in the file. It's going to take
someone with more smarts or patience than me to figure this one out. You might
get some clues by starting with the full document, then successively removing
parts of it and recompiling until the problem goes away.
This is the sort of problem that our dear patriarch Werner Icking would have
solved in an instant.
The problems on p. 35 are MusiXTeX coding errors: If you want the \nextstaff
to go back to the beginning of the bar, you should not close the notes group
with \en and start a new one. When you close the notes group with \en, the
insertion point stays where it is, and the next notes group will go to the
right of that. Also you should use different horizontal spacing for the first
two beats of bar 5, probably \Notes .

I don't have a musixtex installation at hand to verify the following
suggestion, but I suspect that between \startpiece and \endpiece each
line that does not end with a command (\bar) should end with a comment
sign (%) instead.

Hi Marcello,
Your document as it stands is correct for a first pass - you need to
run musixflx with your job-name from a command line (or find out how to
configure your IDE to do it - it'll be similar to configuring it to run
tools like makeindex or bibtex).
Having done that, you will need to ensure that you've put % signs
after any braces at the end of lines as Arjen observed or you will get lots
of \hbox errors messages in pass two. The document then compiles perfectly
as a single line of music. See the musixtex manual for more information on
musixflx.
As an aside, you could save yourself some typing by adding:
\newcommand{\lowerrest}{\def\atnextbar{\znotes\nextstaff\centerpause\en}}
\newcommand{\upperrest}{\def\atnextbar{\znotes\centerpause\en}}
to your preamble. You can then say \lowerrest or \upperrest in your
