Re: [ot_caving] fuel from water

2008-05-06 Thread Terry Holsinger
Yes, you can crack water into hydrogen and oxygen..however you can
not make enough quick enough and for the amount of extra electricity
available in ones vehicle to make any difference. Like ethanol
production, you put more energy into "making" the fuel then you can get
out of it.

[ot_caving] RE: Don's experience on Ladybird Johnson Lake. (I prefer Town Lake).

2008-05-06 Thread Fritz Holt
Don,
I enjoyed your narrative. I have had a similar experience having been
accidentally horsed into a pool by my son-in-law (Steve) but without a
favorable result. It worked but not reliably and required replacement. It is
Verizon's disgusting dumb-ass commercials that irritate me even more than TXU
Energy having Tom Tynan as a spokesperson.

Subject: [ot_caving] Anti-Consumerist Wins Out...

It was last Wednesday when I made the mistake of reaching too deep into Town
Lake - trying to grab a tossed can of coke that I fumbled a catch on.
As a result, my kayak rolled over and I went for unexpected little swim.
My cell phone was inside a deck map bag - that I had assumed was "watertight".
It sure wasn't.
The phone appeared to be totally DOA.
I took it out of its goat leather case - removed the battery and crossed my
fingers.
When I got home I discovered that the lithium ion battery was completely flat
and that it would not take a charge.
I got on eBay and found that the obsolescence of my 22 month old cell phone (an
LG VX 4500) just might be a super bonus.
Right away I ordered a battery for it. The brand-new battery was .99.
Shipping and handling was 3 dollars.
Today I got the battery in the mail - charged it for half and hour then put it
in my phone to see if the phone still works. IT DOES!
(I think I should go ahead and order a few more batteries as spares.)
When this phone was new - these batteries cost 60 dollars at the verizon store!
(Of course it's probably been 18 months since Verizon sold anything compatible
with the VX4500.)
Verizon's solution to my problem was for me to buy a new phone and extend my
service contract for another two years.
Holding on to old gear instead of buying the newest flashiest piece of crap
certainly has its merits!
(VERIZON SUCKS!)

[ot_caving] $ 800 LED headlamp

2008-05-06 Thread David
Are you ready for the $ 800 LED headlamp?

  http://gretnabikes.com/item.asp?cID=0&PID=118

It only puts out 830 lumens.

Lupine's web-site claims it has even brighter versions that
go up to 1400 lumens. Lupine also claims that have
a special lens you can order that puts out a slightly wider
angle throw of light.

Lupine claims their LED lights have made HID lights
obsolete.

If I were going to spend $ 800 on a headlamp, it would have
to do more that just throw light for a couple of hours.

It would have to be integrated into the design of a carbon-graphite
helmet, where the wires, battery source are sandwiched between
the layers of graphite. It would have to be waterproof to
10 feet. The Lupine shaped lens would be flush with a molded
shape protruding from the front of the helmet. The heat sink would
be similar to the design on the new motherboards with copper tubes
radiating along the side of the helmet. Sandwiched in the
layers of graphite would also be other hi-tech systems like
avalanche beacon, data storage, audio port, bluetooth communicator,
satelite receiver, etc.

REALLY COOL THINGS TO DO BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER
THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF SPELEOLOGY

Ever wanted to learn how to set up water lines and showers, how to
build a portable party hot tub or a foot bridge? Ever wanted to
learn how to run audio/visual equipment? Or maybe how to organize an
international gathering? This is your opportunity to be backstage,
behind the scenes, out in front, to be the rock and roll roadie/ cave
tour guide (make up your very own speleogeology!) you always wanted
to be.

We also need folks simply willing to help distribute linens and room
keys, help monitor the humble port-a-cans and trash depots and
generally love to be on call for whatever bizarre need may arise.
Hurry hurry hurry, limited positions available, operators standing by.

collect the NSS photo stands from the Florida convention
store, then deliver to the ICS in Kerrville
assemble stands 3 days prior to opening so prints can be hung for
judging and for final display

build more stands at the ICS, materials provided

This job could be handled by one volunteer or divided up among
several. The stands can be knocked down to sheets measuring about
4'x8', with 2"x2" posts for the legs. They could fit in the back of
a large pick-up or go in a trailor.

[ot_caving] hybrid car news

2008-05-06 Thread David
There are rumors floating around now that the electromagnetic field
inside the car of a hybrid
vehicle will cause leukemia in children.

Are there any physicist out there that can
verify that there could possibly be a strong
electromagnetic field in a hybrid car.

What about in a 100 percent electric car?

Can anybody verify that electromagnetic
fields cause damage to the iron in the blood
or some other side effect?
