[ot_caving] The 2008 NSS Convention

2008-05-22 Thread David
I have made a decision that I will probably skip the NSS
Convention this year.

I really enjoy going to them, and have been to most of the last
5 of them and a few others.

I am probably going to look for an inexpensive shorter road-trip
that I can take the family on.

One of my possible destinations is Alabaster Caverns in
Oklahoma.

I believe that is a cave that I could easily take my toddler
daughter thru.It is about 10 hours from my house, so
it is something we could do on a 3 or 4 day weekend, stopping
along the way to enjoy the road-trip and eat at various
interesting places.

[ot_caving] gas supply and demand

2008-05-22 Thread David
It is my observation that millions of Americans are modifying their
cars by putting excessively large chrome wheels on their cars.

I am certain that this causes the car to get worse gas mileage. These
rims are not aerodynamic and are heavy.

In addition, the larger tires they are upgrading to are also using more gas
as they are wider.

The stress put on the cars axle by these tires is surely going to where
out the axle bearings faster.

The factories that make all of these rims, and tires and bearings are going
to need fuel to keep running.

Future cars will have to have lightweight aerodynamic ( meaning ugly ) rims
and tires in order to lower their EPA estimated mileage. That was what
they did on the Honda Insight. The hybrid drivetrain only played a small
role in the high EPA rating.

I think it is going to be difficult to make an off-road vehicle that is fuel
efficient. But hopefully soon, caver will be able to pick them up dirt
cheap as their owners will not be able to put gas in them.

RE: [Texascavers] Diabetic describes ordeal in NSW cave

Think the SSS will be looking for a new VP?

Yeah, he sounds real “experienced” alright, Darla.

He left his only source of water at the entrance, only brought A light (meaning
1, not the 3 that is recommended), was without his diabetes meds, and went by
himself!

To top it off, he’s the VP of the Sydney Speleological Society.

I know folks here have stated that they have gone caving solo, and I still
maintain it’s dangerous as hell.

With this guy being a diabetic or not, one should never cave solo if it can be
helped.

Have y’all read the NSS Accident Report that came in the mail a while back? My
kids enjoy reading it, as do I, and we have learned a LOT about what to do
And not do when caving.

Evidently, this guy hasn’t or overestimated his skill level, another way to
find yourself in said Report.

Off the soap box.

Cave safely and have a great Memorial Day weekend!

(BTW, let’s pause this weekend to thank all of the men and women who have
served and died for our country to help protect us and enable us to have the
freedom to do things like, go caving, and ensure that our biggest complaint we
have in this country is gas prices. It could be a heck of a lot worse if we
lived in another country!).

Did everyone see this article? How embarrassing. This guy is the
vice-president of the Sydney Speleological Society.

Seeing this article reminded me of the advertisement in the June Outside
Magazine with Aron Ralston quoted at saying, "I still climb solo, only now I
carry a PLB backup by my side. You should too."

Is that really responsible backcountry exploration as it says in the ad or even
responsible advertising?

The cost of living here in Iowa Colony, Texas is very

[ot_caving] gas price

2008-05-22 Thread quinta
It was in 2004 according to the New York Times that it first hit $2.00 and they
said (and I do remember that time) 'in the early 1970's adjusted for inflation
it hlit $3.00 at the peak.'
That was when I drove only as far as I could go and come home with a tank of
gas (Ford Fiesta) on the weekend or fill up in a hurry on Saterday night before
the stations closed and would not reopen before Monday morning.

China has asked countries to donate "millions of tents."

Does anybody see anything ironic about that statement?

Aren't nearly all the tents in the world made in China?
