The thing that gets to me is how in white history texts, the word "massacre" is used to describe ay event in which whites were killed by indians, and the word "battle" is used to describe any event in which indians were killed by whites, including army raids on sleeping encampments of women, children the elderly. I've even seen evidence of this in the roadside historical markers in Texas.
History is not recounted by the losers. Things done by the opponents are heinous; similar actions by the victors are heroic.

[Texascavers] TSA Membership and General Caver Listing, As Of 6/30/8

2008-06-30 Thread mark . alman

All,

As a public service at absolutely no cost to you, here's the latest TSA
and General Caver Listings as of June 30th, 2008.

The TSA received several renewals after the last broadcast and the
periodic listing of this seems to be much appreciated.

I've included membership dates for all cavers with a pulse, both TSA
members and non-members. If you ever attended a caving function in the
Lone Star state, you're on this list.

If you could take the time to peruse the rather lengthy list below, you
can see if you're paid up or not, or were ever a member.

If you're currently not a member in good standing, please don't despair
and wail and gnash your teeth.

There's no reason to be a member of the unwashed masses. There's still
hope!

Join the TSA for a measly $20 (cheap!) at:

http://www.cavetexas.org/TSA/join.html

While you're at it, join the NSS, the TCMA, the TCC, the TSS, and any
other worthy group you see listed in the Links section.

Also, if you know some of the folks listed below and they do not have
email, please contact them and beg/threaten them to join or rejoin.

Finally, if y'all could take this list to your respective Grotto
meetings and encourage folks to join or re-up, that would be great!

I will be posting this list monthly, from here on out, to let all know
where they stand with the TSA, when their dues are about to expire, and
to (hopefully) guilt all of you non-members into joining the TSA!

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Mark Alman

[ot_caving] Shell - new EarthSky Clear Voices for Science podcast

2008-06-30 Thread quinta
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : June 30, 2008

A leading scientist for Shell has spoken in a new EarthSky Clear Voices for
Science podcast about the need for what he called aggressive action on the
issue of CO2 and other emissions leading to global warming.
Chief Technology Officer Jan van der Eijk told a reporter from Earthsky - whose
science podcasts are heard on broadcast outlets around the world - that the
increase in energy demand and also the need to use all kinds of sources of
energy will lead to an increase in CO2 emissions, and we all know that the CO2
emissions are related to global warming. That's a major concern and also
something that calls for aggressive action.
In this interview, Dr. van der Eijk described to EarthSky's Jorge Salazar the
three hard truths of the world's energy use. The first, he said, is simply
that Earth's population and energy needs will substantially grow. The second is
that the easy-to-reach oil and gas will struggle to supply that growth. And the
third hard truth relates to rising CO2 in our atmosphere . What is important
is that people start to realize that fossil energy is a finite resource, and
that we need to find ways to use that energy in a more responsible manner,
said van der Eijk.
A second EarthSky Clear Voices for Science podcast- also released today -
features Carl Mesters, Chief Scientist of Shell, on the subject of
gas-to-liquid technology for use in transportation fuels. EarthSky will release
6 more interviews on global energy over the coming months, featuring such
topics as biofuels from algae and cellulose, technologies for recovery of
hard-to-reach oil, and research on carbon sequestration.
Bringing these interviews to our audience is part of our mission to be a clear
voice for science, said Deborah Byrd, founder and lead producer of EarthSky.
These interviews will give our audience a unique look at the research,
insights, concerns and hopes of oil company scientists.

[Texascavers] the BBC cave video

2008-06-30 Thread David
The price of the high def ( HD ) version of the BBC cave video
( Planet Series ) has fallen to under 30 dollars.

There are still dozens of them for sale here in Houston at
Fry's.

You can find a 20 HD TV at Sam's for $ 300, and the
prices continue to drop.

You can order the HD player online for $ 80.

http://www.hddvdboxsets.com/hddvd2-352696011-B000IJV4BC-Toshiba_HD_A2_HD_DVD_Player.html

So for just a little over $ 400, you can watch the cave video in
high definition in your very own home.

Someone should set this video up at the ICS somewhere where
7 or 8 people can lounge around on a couch and watch it and it
should run all day and into the evening every day during the event.
( I will furnish the video and the video player ), but I don't yet have
a flat screen tv. I am hoping to have one by then.

I would love to watch this video on a 65 LCD TV with
surround sound and a bunch of comfy couches, and a popcorn
machine. ( Can anybody out there furnish a popcorn machine ? )

On a related note,

Fry's also has the Amazing Caves DVD for only $ 14.99. This
video could be set up running in a different area.

Is anybody out there working on having a display set up like this.

The past few NSS Conventions have attempted this, but I feel there
is room for improvement.

I should be able to help attend to the visitors in the viewing area
after all the electronics are set up.

Would anybody out there be willing to donate a HDMI cable during
the event? At least 2 would be needed. You would eventually
get them back. What about speakers for a surround sound system,
or cables or the receiver? Could anybody out there donate those
for a week? I don't know a thing about sound or surround sound
for TV's.

Geez, David! We did that in Indiana last year, and in Washington in 2006.
We even showed it on a 10-foot freakin' screen!

I would love to watch this video on a 65 LCD TV with surround sound and

Go ahead. Spend the $110 for the player and the movie, strap your new 65
LCD on top of the car, and I'll meet you in Lake City with a microwave and
some Orville Redenbacher Movie Theater Butter. Then you can put the HD
player and the DVD in the auction.

Ack! So that means the two bestest caving events of the year -- TCR and

Que lastima!

While it's true that Austin and Atlanta are about 1,000 miles apart, there is
clearly some cross-pollination between the two events. I see Sherry and
Emily Graham were at TCR last year, and though I missed the 2007 TAG,
there are always a few Tejanos there.

The conflict means I'll have to make a choice, and the energy crisis being as
it is, I'll have to pragmatically choose the closer event. The same will be
true
for Becky Jones, a damn shame!

Do I correctly assume that Liebman is still showing up? If he is, it's the
only
place. He didn't even show at OTR last year, which he can spit at from his
back porch.

Hopefully, Ediger can hop a ride down on a freight train.
