[ot_caving] new powerful LED flashlights

2008-11-11 Thread David
I mentioned last week that Fry's had a new flashlight called the P6 that
I wanted to test, but don't yet have the money.

Now they have in the P14 and the P17.

http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/theshorelinemarket_2024_15476918

http://www.flashlightoutlet.com/store/pc/catalog/p148414_p14_2226_detail.jpg

Both of these are too big and heavy to take caving. However, I am "very"
curious about the colators used to diffuse the light. Coast claims they
create a flood pattern. If so, the P14 might come in handy on a trip to
a big cave. I am willing to bet it is the brightest flashlight in the world
that uses 4 AA batteries ( The old Princeton Tec - Xenon Surge requried
8 AA batteries, which shows you how far we have come now. )

The P14 was around $ 70 and the P17 around $ 80.

The P17 is aimed at security guards that need a very bright
flashlight. It uses 3 D size batteries.

http://www.brightguy.com/images/bgimages/COAHP8417_2.jpg

Imagine 189 lumens for 700 hours. That is awesome!

These lights appear to be very water resistant, and well built, but I won't
know that for sure until I get one in my hands and try to take it apart.

I will be disappointed if the light pattern sucks.

However, both lights claim to have a dim switch. Hurray!! Finally
somebody is listening.

I know some of you are getting bored with this thread, but caver's
in the future will someday have an inexpensive, bright,
water-resistant headlamp;
so until then, all I can do is, document what I see:

Re: [ot_caving] FW: Internet Virus Alert - from Texas Sen. Dan Patrick

2008-11-11 Thread Don Cooper
CRIPES Fritz! Do you also believe Barack Obama is a communist socialist
terrorist muslim because some hack emailed you with something that *said he
was*? If you'd CHECKED 'snopes' you would have found there ain't nothing
new about this 'virus'.

Although it is a real virus - somewhere out there - keep your pants on.
It's nothing new, and is nothing quite like it is described as.

Simply don't open any emails with attachments from people you don't know.
Better yet, don't open attachments from people YOU know either. And
WHATEVER you do - don't download any 'free software' promising to eliminate
spyware from your computer or 'clean your registry'. If you try and view a
video file and get an offer for a upgraded video codec - run away - close
your browser and stay away from that nasty site. Above all - NEVER, EVER
"ingest" any excecutable that you didn't ask for!

Once again - an internet hoax worse than ANY possible virus!!!

Well... except for the Good Times Virus!
Do NOT open any email with the title "Good Times"

Goodtimes will re-write your hard drive. Not only that, but it will
scramble any disks that are even close to your computer. It will
recalibrate your refrigerator's coolness setting so all your ice cream
goes melty. It will demagnetize the strips on all your credit cards,
screw up the tracking on your television and use subspace field
harmonics to scratch any CD's you try to play.

It will give your ex-girlfriend your new phone number. It will mix
Kool-aid into your fishtank. It will drink all your beer and leave
its socks out on the coffee table when there's company coming over. It
will put a dead kitten in the back pocket of your good suit pants and
hide your car keys when you are late for work.

Goodtimes will make you fall in love with a penguin. It will give you
nightmares about circus midgets. It will pour sugar in your gas tank and
shave off both your eyebrows while dating your current boyfriend behind
your back and billing the dinner and hotel room to your Visa card.

It will seduce your grandmother. It does not matter if she is dead, such
is the power of Goodtimes, it reaches out beyond the grave to sully those
things we hold most dear.

It moves your car randomly around parking lots so you can't find it. It
will kick your dog. It will leave libidinous messages on your boss's
voice mail in your voice! It is insidious and subtle. It is dangerous and
terrifying to behold. It is also a rather interesting shade of mauve.

Goodtimes will give you Dutch Elm disease. It will leave the toilet seat
up. It will make a batch of Methamphetamine in your bathtub and then
leave bacon cooking on the stove while it goes out to chase
gradeschooles with your new snowblower.

[Texascavers] NSS Fellow in Texas

2008-11-11 Thread Jim Kennedy
On 11 Nov, Bill Mixon said: "A reminder that the deadline for
nominations for those awards is this coming Saturday, Nov 15. See
http://caves.org/committee/award/ and then click on the individual award
or see the October NSS News for information on who should receive the
nominations."

I did some checking around. To date, the NSS lists Fellows. Texas
has 503 NSS members, 47 of which are NSS Fellows, or 9.3% of Texas NSS
members. There are a lot of dedicated Texas cavers who are also NSS
members who are conspicuously absent from that list, like John Moses,
Gary Napper, Sue Schindel, Paul Fambro, Jon Cradit, John Brooks, Allan
Cobb, Butch Fralia, Charley Savvas, Chris Thibodaux, Julie Jenkins, R.
D. Milhollin, Kenny McGee, Lee Jay Graves, Rafal Kedzierski, Walter
Feaster, Nico Hauwert, Michael Cicherski, Geoff Hoese, Becky Jones, John
Green, Philip Rykwalder, Chris Vreeland, Emily & Kevin McGowan, Mark
Alman, and so on. There are also other ex-Texas cavers that both are
and should be Fellows. Note that this list is not intended as an
endorsement for these fine folks, nor is it what I would consider an
exhaustive list of all potential Fellows. It is merely to point out
that we are doing ourselves a disservice by not having more Texas cavers
recognized by the NSS for our achievements. Are we just too lazy to go
through the simple nomination process?

Next year the NSS Convention is going to be in Texas, along with the ICS
in Kerrville. It sure would be nice to have more of our own recognized
there. Anybody feel like spearheading some nominations? It's not too
late!

Do not reply to this message. For general ICS questions, contact Secretary John
Moses at secret...@ics2009.us, or johnmo...@excite.com. For questions about the
message below, reply to the authors address above.

Dear OC,

I'm forwarding a message that is rapidly being distributed. I understand why
it was sent but it hasn't given time for us to review the implications in
detail and see if there are any red flags. I learned of this on Sunday, but
have been in non-stop meetings and was just preparing to write you about it
when the message below arrived.

The key points you need to be aware of is that to make this work, I expect
all or nearly all of the buffer built into the ICS budget to prevent
financial loss may be gone. The Treasurers are currently hammering out the
numbers. Be prepared for them to contact some of you and say they are
trimming items from your budgets. I'm not saying those items will be
permanently removed, but they may be. If we find ourselves later with enough
of a financial cushion, then they may authorize you to add those items back
in, but now more than ever, remember to not spend anything unless it has
been approved by the Treasurers. If you do, you may not get reimbursed.

I appreciate the NSS BOG's intent and actions to make the banquet open to
all, but I also need to make sure it doesn't lose money from the ICS. This
change will make that goal difficult, and I hope not impossible. As always,
thank you for your efforts to provide an exceptional event at as low a price
as possible. I will post a message to the ICS e-list once all details are
worked out and confirmed.

Subject: [Texascavers] International Congress of Speleology - registration
adjustment

Cavers,

I just wanted to call your attention to the fact that after discussions at
the NSS Board of Governors meeting this past weekend, the ICS Organizing
Committee will be making a cost adjustment to an event for the 15th
International Congress of Speleology to be held next July in Kerrville,
Texas.

The ICS Banquet is included in the cost of registration for the Congress.
However, there originally was an additional charge for the NSS Convention
Awards Banquet scheduled for the evening before. But since this is the
traditional NSS annual event at which the Society honors members who have
made extensive contributions to caving, speleology, and/or the organization,
it was felt that the NSS banquet should be included for Congress registrants
at no additional charge. Those who have already registered and have paid
the supplemental NSS banquet cost will be refunded their money.

The Congress registration form will be adjusted to reflect this change.
However, for those individuals who plan on registering for the Congress in
the very near future, please keep in mind that you do not need to pay
additionally for the NSS banquet.

Permission is gladly given to repost this message, and thank you in advance
to those of you who will help spread the word about this change.

Ancient cave yields clues to Chinese history
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer Randolph E. Schmid, Ap Science =
Writer =96 Thu Nov 6, 2:00 pm ET
WASHINGTON =96 A stalagmite rising from the floor of a cave in China is =
providing clues to the end of several dynasties in Chinese history.

Slowly built from the minerals in dripping water over 1,810 years, =
chemicals in the stone tell a tale of strong and weak cycles of the =
monsoon, the life-giving rains that water crops to feed millions of =
people.

Dry periods coincided with the demise of the Tang, Yuan and Ming =
dynasties, researchers report in Friday's edition of the journal =
Science.

In addition, the team led by Pingzhong Zhang of Lanzhou University in =
China noted a change in the cycles around 1960 which they said may =
indicate that greenhouse gases released by human activities have become =
the dominant influence on the monsoon.

The Wanxiang Cave is in Gansu Province, a region where 80 percent of the =
rainfall occurs between May and September.

Chemical concentrations in the stalagmite indicate a series of =
fluctuations lasting from one to several centuries and roughly similar =
to records of the Little Ice Age, Medieval warm period and Dark Age cold =
period recorded in Europe.

There were decade-long fluctuations between A.D. 190 and 530, the end of =
the Han Dynasty and most of the Era of Disunity, the researchers said. =

From 530 to 850 the monsoon declined, covering the end of the Era of =

Disunity, the Sui Dynasty and most of the Tang Dynasty.

The monsoon remained weak, with another sharp drop between 910 and 930, =
then it rose sharply over 60 and remained strong until 1020.

The researchers found that after 1020 the monsoon varied but was =
generally strong until a sharp drop between 1340 and 1360: the mid =
14th-century monsoon weakening. It stayed weak, with substantial =
fluctuation, until a sharp increase between 1850 and 1880.

According to the researchers, the 9th-century dry period contributed to =
the decline of the Tang Dynasty and the Mayans in Mesoamerica. It also =
may have contributed to the lack of unity during the Five Dynasties and =
Ten Kingdoms period, they said.

The following strengthening of the monsoon may have contributed to the =
rapid increase in rice cultivation, the dramatic increase in population, =
and the general stability at the beginning of the Northern Song Dynasty, =
they suggested, adding that the end of the Yuan and the end of the Ming =
are both characterized by unusually weak summer monsoons.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundations of the =
United States and China, the Gary Comer Science and Education =
Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the =
Chinese Academy of Sciences

In the first case, I jumped off of the bottom step, not the top
one--still a legal jump from a 40-foot ladder.

In Golondrinas I merely jumped over my hard hat while it lay on the
moldy, green guano covered floor of the great pit--still a legal act
of jumping in Golondrinas.

Nobody said we needed to go to any extremes in either situation. But
there is something to be said for precision when communicating ideas.

[Texascavers] Texas Speleological Association 2009 officiers

2008-11-11 Thread Ron Ralph
Cavers,

I have counted 85 votes and await the afternoon post to make the final
count. If you did not vote and postmark your ballot yesterday, the 10th,
throw it in the trash and resolve to do better next year.

Ron Ralph, vote counter

[ot_caving] 1/4" steel balls

2008-11-11 Thread Gill Ediger

1/4" copper tubing works fine.

I measured a difference of 6mm between AA and AAA batteries.
In order to charge L-ion AAA batteries in my AA charger, I need four
conductors to take up the slack.

I figured 6mm is about .2456". Brass, Bronze or Copper would also work.
-thanks,

[NMCAVER] SWR vendors

2008-11-11 Thread J. LaRue Thomas
I do not have a list of vendors planning to attend and I _do not_ need one.
There is plenty of room for vendors, either in the foyer or the library, and
I will have the key so anyone who needs to get in a bit early to set up will
be able to do so.

If anyone knows of a vendor who is not on this list could you please pass
along this information? Jacqui
