[Texascavers] UT Grotto meeting - Wednesday November 18, 2009
Underground Texas Grotto meeting - Wednesday November 18, 2009 www.utgrotto.org The meeting is on Wednesday from 7:45 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html Sean Lewis will be presenting Indiana Cave Exploration. Sean recently came to Austin and Texas caving from Indiana where he was involved in a number of projects that included some spectacular photography. The most recent National Cave Rescue Commission (NCRC) http://www.caves.org/ncrc/national class was held in Indiana that conveys the extremes that state has available for caving adventures. Come check out some very cool caves from a different region. Please see the web site for information on all UT Grotto activities. All of our information is available including officer contact info, trip reports, new caver training, and an event calendar that lists upcoming caving trips, beginner trips, vertical rope training, or other cool social event activities. Occasionally, some cavers gather beforehand about 6:30 at Sau Paulo www.saopaulos.net for happy hour margaritas, and then we walk over to the meeting. After the Official Grotto meeting, we migrate to Posse East www.posseeast.com for beer & burgers, recruit for upcoming trips, and share caving stories. The UT Grotto needs you, the bold caver with photos and a story to share about your adventures, scientific research, or something else really cool. Contact Gary v...@utgrotto.org to schedule you into our incredible Program series. - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

I think this is really interesting.but wonder how safe it would be to drink water from moon ice.maybe I have seen too many Sci fi flicksbut isn't it possible for there to be substances in that water that we might not want to ingest? All, the fourth quarter version of The TEXAS CAVER has been posted to the Members Area by our very own near and dear and recuperating web extraordinaire, Butch Fralia. This is a smaller issue than the third quarter 64 page Mega ICS TC (Heck, the TSA would be bankrupt if every issue was 64 pages!), but is special, nevertheless. In this issue: We have some excellent trip reports and photos from Justin and Kurt Menking and their recent explorations and from our new 2010 Vice Chair, Ellie Thoene, on her Amazing Maze trip. There are articles and photos from the post ICS party for Chris Nicola and Barb McLeod from Bill Steele and Lyndon Tiu, a photo collage of TCR pix taken by David Ochel and moi in the inside cover, and another entertaining "Carbide Corner" from Mark Minton. Finally, I was fortunate enough to have received some excellent older photos of Ed Alexander sent in by James Jasek and some touching and very special photos sent in of Ed and his family taken by Frank Binney. This last issue of the TC for 2009 is available to all TSA members. Not a TSA member? No problem! We still would like for you to contemplate becoming a TSA member. Send me an email for your complimentary past issue of the TEXAS CAVER and see what you've been missing. Visit the TSA website at www.cavetexas.org and become a paid member and/or become an online member of the TSA. If you're a TSA member, but haven't yet joined the Digital Revolution, it is extremely painless to do so. Go to http://www.cavetexas.org/members/ and sign up and enjoy the current and back issues! Please remember to select how you want your TC: mail or digital. Be sure to also peruse the back issues of the TEXAS CAVER, if you haven't done so already. There now are a total of 17 issues of the Pulitzer worthy TEXAS CAVER available for your reading pleasure! You can still opt to receive a hard copy TC, but will have to wait a couple of weeks, at the earliest, to receive your latest newsletter via snail mail. The Members Area continues to expand very well and we currently have grown to 86 members, with 48 opting to receive their TC digitally. This is a substantial savings to the TSA and has helped us manage to stay in the black this year! Finally, I want to thank all of the cavers who submitted material for this issue and all of the past issues of The TEXAS CAVER. This is YOUR newsletter and I couldn't do it without YOU! So as the caving season starts in earnest, don't be bashful. Be sure to get those articles, photos, and trip reports written and sent in. Without you, there is no TSA or TEXAS CAVER! Thanks! [Texascavers] Re: archiving your cave data
David Locklear said: >I think the next hurdle is to develop a laptop that doesn't use batteries, and uses a crank and some kind of power saving device not affected by storage. Why not make your computer solar powered? I don't know the expected lifetime of solar panels, but ones stored dry and in the dark might last a long time. Take them and your archived computer out into the sun and let 'er rip. Presumably there will still be sunshine, unless the future is a Matrix sort of world. ;-) Actually, electricity will still likely be used and available in some form for a long time. Just provide a simple set of terminals on your computer and any power source of the future with the proper voltage and amperage should work. The bigger problem would be communicating anything 500 years into the future. What language would you use? Bill Mixon said: >Anyway, there wouldn't be any convenient way to get the data out of the computer, even if you could read it on screen. It seems likely that some sort of scanning technology will be around for quite a while. Assuming the language on the screen could be understood, it shouldn't be too much trouble to scan it, or take the equivalent of movies of it, and then convert that into whatever the current digital format is. Again the bigger problem would be making the archived output meaningful. Pictures might be better than anything written. David Locklear said: >I wonder is it o.k. to say, "We went cave snorkeling in an underwater cave" ? My opinion is that sounds weird. It should sound weird, because it wouldn't work. An underwater cave is one that is completely sumped. If it has airspace, it's not underwater. Snorkels don't work underwater...
