[Texascavers] Fw: Guads Caves Available for Recreational Caving
FYI, Mark. - Forwarded Message From: Ken Harrington To: NM Cavers Sent: Tue, March 16, 2010 4:54:13 PM Subject: [NMCAVER] Guads Caves Available for Recreational Caving Hi folks, I met with the District Ranger for the Guadlupe District this morning and received a copy of the list of caves currently available for recreational caving in the guads (see attached). There are other caves that are currently closed for bats that may be available later in the year, for example, Pink Dragon. The list is a draft and it is requested that the list not be released outside of the caving community. The Forest Service does not want groups of cavers with no caving experience coming in and asking for permits just because they found out from the list that a cave exists. My meeting was cordial and led me to believe that some attitudes in the Forest Service may be changing. She seemed very receptive to joint activites with the SWR that would be mutually beneficial to both sides. Only time will tell, but I recommend we give them the chance to prove that there will be improvements in relations between us. Ken _ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. We came into an area where soil was completely missing, exposing nothing but an expanse of white limestone bedrock. The Don knelt beside a water-filled depression in the rock, about the size of a yellow dog, and proudly told me how he vividly remembered the day when it was he who discovered this very depression. In Maya such water-holding holes in limestone bedrock have their own name. Such a hole is a haltún. You can see several typical ones at http://www.backyardnature.net/n/10/100314ha.jpg In Maya culture, the haltún is important for the simple reason that when you're wandering in the forest and find one, you can drink its water. At least older Maya are still acutely aware that humans need unpolluted water, and that if drinkable water disappears, living becomes impossible. For older Maya like Don Philomeno, the haltún demands great respect. Don Philomeno spent several minutes explaining to me the proper way to clean one and protect it, and I felt honored to be initiated in such a way into the mystical realm of the haltún. I'm thinking about haltúnes nowadays because most days I pull up a few buckets of water from the 80-ft-deep well where the Brittle Maidenhairs live, keep each haltún in the area filled, and water various saplings we want to bring through the current dry season. Also I'm thinking about the haltún because if you want to see birds you can't do better than to position yourself nearby, and just watch the stream of species come in from the forest and settle there for a drink. The haltún is a wonderful thing. * Best wishes to all Newsletter Readers. Jim Subscribe AND unsubscribe to this Newsletter at http://www.backyardnature.net/news/natnat.php Nature is a hanging judge. That TEA ... well no comment (other than hitting one's head against a brick wall) ... as a Texas educator I will be happy to retire in 16 mo and not have deal with TEA anymore but I will miss the working with the kids (physics teacher) To keep this post cave related I drag in to the classroom my old retired cave rope, repelling rack, 8 rings, old Jumars, bat detector and lessons include: 1) frictional coefficient of the rack on the rope 2) tug-o-war with the 220' rope - demo balanced forces 3) frequency division of ultrasonic sounds (extra credit to go watch a bat flight) 4) show the kiddos some caving slides When I taught IPC in the chemistry section lessons included: 1) chemistry of the carbide lamp (yup, brought it to class) 2) chemistry of cave formation process 3) show the kiddos some cave slides ~F~ > Well, we all know that bumper sticker. [Texascavers] Bustamante Shootout
Gun Battle Between Mexican Military and 60 Suspected Zetas BUSTAMANTE, NUEVO LEON - The Mexican Navy is releasing details on a shootout between Marines and 60 heavily armed suspected hit men for the Zetas. The Mexican Navy says Marines raided a ranch in Bustamante, Nuevo Leon late Sunday. That's about 70 miles west of Falcon Lake. The Navy says the shoot out began when a convoy headed to the ranch opened fire on a Mexican helicopter. Two helicopters supported 50 marines as they stormed the compound and killed 8 suspected Zetas. The rest scattered. No arrests have been reported. The Mexican Navy allowed cameras inside the ranch called La Languilla. The compound has four cabins. The main cabin looks like a hunting lodge. There is a trophy room with bucks mounted along he wall. A stuffed bear and puma were also found. Marines also found rooms were they say the Zetas slept and showered. Stock piles of clothes and food were also found. http://www.krgv.com/news/local/story/Gun-Batt... - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com
