largest and smallest. Some of the categories include foreign and historic
measures which can come in handy when you find yourself caving in a far away

[Texascavers] Austin's "Night of the Bat"

2010-05-24 Thread Jim Kennedy
Cavers,

Check out www.nightofthebat.com, and especially take a look at the
poster (accessed by the link at the bottom of the page). On June 6,
Austin is hosting a celebration of all things batty, including a live
appearance by Adam West and the 1966 Batmobile. There will also be a
showing of the 1966 Batman film (the one that launched the popular TV
series of my youth) at the Paramount Theater, And a whole host of
events will occur on the Congress Avenue Bridge, which will be closed
off from 2 to 10. Naturally, Bat Conservation International will be
there in full force, having 2 informational and sales tables at each end
of the bridge. But we need help! If you are available that afternoon
and evening, we want to give you a free T-shirt just to wander around
the crowd, answer simple questions (if you know the answers), and point
people to the BCI tables. I will be there at one of them, answering
what questions I can. We would love to have a really visible presence
in the crowd, and hope to get 100-150 volunteers wearing our shirts. If
you think you might be interested, send me your name, address, telephone
number(s), and email address, and I will pass that information along to
our development folks here who are organizing the volunteer corps. They
will then get back to you with details. Even if you can't help, I hope
you can still stop by this free and fun event.

Jim "Crash" Kennedy, BCI

[Texascavers] depth of Midnight Cave in Austin

2010-05-24 Thread Mixon Bill

Recent mention of laser rangefinders such as Distos reminds me:

The UT Grotto recently had a vertical training night at Midnight Cave.
I stopped by to see what was going on and mentioned that some time I
hoped to get there with a tape and see what the depth of the drop
really is. It is often spoken of as 60 feet or even more. My
recollection from previous visits was that is was more like 35. Well,
Jim Kennedy went to get his Disto out of his car and measured it. It
is 44 to 47 feet, depending on whether you measure from the top of the
sink or from the ledge where people actually start their rappels. --

[Allcavers] Fwd: [Texascavers] Government Canyon karst project

2010-05-24 Thread Diana Tomchick
For those cavers who are looking for a fun Memorial Day caving
project, I can strongly recommend this one. Marvin is a great guy and
Government Canyon is a wonderful state park. The regular camping spots
for this park are probably all reserved for this weekend, but as a
member of this project you will not have to worry about that, as you
will have a separate primitive camping spot reserved for the project.
The caves are not large, but there are many of them and it's a great
way to learn to survey.

Be sure to take your mountain bike with you if you plan to go, as
there are extensive (and very nice) bike trails in the park that you
can use, too.

The Government Canyon karst project is happening next weekend – the
29th and 30th. You can pick your own dig or your own area to
ridgewalk – and there are caves to explore and survey.

We will meet at 9:00 both mornings in the parking lot of the
Volunteer/Research Station.

Camping is available. Contact me to set it up.

Directions to the Government Canyon Karst Project:

Find the intersection of U.S. 16 and Loop 1604 in northwest Bexar
County (clearly shown on any state highway map). Drive 2 miles north
on U.S. 16 to the third traffic light and turn left onto FM 1560
(there is a Shell station on the corner). Follow 1560 for 3 miles
till you see the sign for GCSNA. Follow the arrow to the right and
drive 2 more miles to the sharp left turn in the road. The gate to
GCSNA is straight ahead. Enter at the gate and then take the first
right. There is an unlocked gate that will need to be opened and
then closed behind you. Continue to the Volunteer/Research Station,
where we will meet.

Here's one that looks pretty good. They indicate that it's rugged and water

Anyone used one?

Central Texas Cavers,

Bill Russell has mostly recovered from his stroke and is ready to go caving.
Please join him at Ruby Ridge, Hays County, Monday morning, May 24, between
9 and 10am to celebrate. We will be cleaning out a vertical shaft that has
been filled with small rock, then open up big passage (hopefully). Bring
appropriate tools, clothing and gloves. I will bring a ladder, shovel and a
wheelbarrow.

Please let me know off-line if you can attend, then just show at the cave.
The address is 1397 Ruby Ranch Road, Buda. Park on the road or the pipeline

Coal-mine drainage as a driver for carbonate dissolution; deciphering the
balance between acidity, alkalinity, CO2 and karst processes

Acid mine drainage - formed when pyrite oxidation releases sulfuric acid and
iron - is a common sight in the coal-mined regions of Appalachia. However,
when carbonate layers are present in the coal sequence, the mine drainage may
be alkaline rather than acidic. In flooded mine systems, elevated CO2
pressures can occur as the sulfuric acid from pyrite oxidation drives carbonate
dissolution while metal precipitation consumes the generated alkalinity. These
settings provide an interesting, anthropogenically-caused analog to karst
systems where sulfuric acid drives cave formation.

Dorothy Vesper applies her interest in inorganic geochemistry to both beautiful
karst springs and not-so-beautiful contaminated sites. She has a BS degree in
geology from Juniata College, and MS and PhD degrees from The Pennsylvania
State University. For the 10 years between the two graduate degrees, Dorothy
worked for consulting firms in the Boston area. A karst project in
Kentucky-Tennessee convinced her to come back to school for the third and final
round. Her current karst projects focus on conceptual models, protection and
sustainability of water resources in the structurally-complex Ridge and Valley
Province. In her spare time she studies metal geochemistry at mining-related
sites.
