2012-02-06 Thread Ron Ralph
Cavers,

The next scheduled second Wednesday work session of the Texas
Speleological Survey will be on February 8 in two days at the JJ Pickle
Research Center. Use the front entrance on Burnet Road north of highway 183.
Both publication sales and the library will be open. The door will be open
at 5:00 p.m. and stay open till we adjourn. Remember it is best to arrive
before 6:00 pm.

Come by and help out and search the files for your favorite caves. If you
have a desire to see the files and unpublished maps, come by and take a
look. If you have questions, please contact me at ronra...@austin.rr.com or
the office manager, Jim Kennedy. I will be happy to send you a link to the
campus map.

Conn Update   Please pass this on.

I talked with Jan Conn for some time this morning. She sounded upbeat,
humorous, and herself.   There is lots to do adjusting to life without Herb,
and she has local friends helping.   Thanks to all the cavers who have offered
condolences.   She appreciates you all, but please hold the cards and letters.

[Texascavers] Lost Oasis cricket count

2012-02-06 Thread Jim Kennedy
Cavers,

The TCMA will be performing a cricket emergence count at the Lost Oasis
Cave Preserve in south Austin on Wednesday 29 February. This is an
excellent opportunity for a couple of interested volunteers to come out
with us and learn what is involved with this biological monitoring
technique. The Preserve Manager really only needs two people to
participate in the training. First responses to Ron Ralph at
ronra...@austin.rr.com get on the list. Others are welcome to just show
up and observe if they wish. Ron will send the address and a map to
participants who need such. Todd Bayless, the Natural Resources
Specialist for Travis County (their karst guy) will be doing the
training. There may also be a discussion on red imported fire ant
surveys and treatments. Meeting time at the preserve is 5:30 pm. For
more details, contact Ron.

[Texascavers] TSA Convention Map Salon

2012-02-06 Thread Marvin and Lisa
Announcing the 2012 TSA Cave Map Salon

Cave cartographers,

I hope you are working hard on finishing that map for the convention because
it's just around the corner. I'll be organizing the salon again this year.
Below are the basic rules as listed on the TSA web page. On the map salon
page you can also find a link to the judging criteria. I encourage you to
take a look at it to ensure that you have all the necessary elements on your
map. Maps will be displayed at the Geneva School, where Saturday
presentations will take place. Bring your maps there by 10:00 Saturday
morning or get them to me before that if you can't make it Saturday morning.

As past winners can attest, it's not that hard to win and awards are
bountiful.

1) All maps submitted must be of Texas caves, or drafted by Texas cavers.
Texas cavers are those whose primary residence has been Texas at some time
during the previous year. Cartographers can enter as many maps as they want.
Maps need not be of the entire cave (i.e. detail maps of cave sections are
eligible). Caves need not be completely surveyed for a map of the cave to be
eligible.

2) All maps must have been made in the past year (since the last
Convention). Significant modifications or additions made to older maps in
that time may also be submitted.

3) Maps that have won past awards at either the TSA or NSS Conventions are
not eligible for entry.

4) Final categories depend on the number of entries, but should include:

*
Caves under 100 m

*
Caves over 100 m

*
First-time Cartographer.

The first-time cartographer category is to encourage beginning
cartographers, and is aimed at those whom have never entered a map salon
before. It is not for skilled cartographers who just never took the time to
enter before this. Maps may not be entered in multiple categories.

5) Judging will be objective (based on mandatory elements of good cave maps,
and drafting quality) and subjective (quality points awarded for innovative
representations, balance and layout, visual impact, etc.). Completed score
sheets with comments will be given to the entrants at the end of the
Convention.

6) Prizes will be determined by the number of entrants and categories. There
is no fee to enter maps, and the maps remain the property of the entrant.
However, the editors of The TEXAS CAVER will probably want to publish the
winning maps in upcoming issues.

7) Ribbons are awarded for First, Second, and Third place maps, as well as
Honorable Mention. All ribbons do not have to be awarded in each category if
the number of submissions is low and the scoring does not suggest awards.
The highest-scored map will also be awarded Best of Show, in addition to the
prize in its individual category.

Thank you,

Marvin Miller

Re: [Texascavers] NSS voting

2012-02-06 Thread Preston Forsythe
I think it is a great money saving idea and the volunteer run NSS needs all
of the money saving help it can get. Here in KY approximately 95 % of the
cavers have 'puters. (based on only 2 out of 40 KY Speleo Survey members not
having email). Therefore, Texas must have at least 98% of the cavers using
email. The non-puter folks can use the library or friends. There is no
excuse not to read the platforms. Who knows maybe the % that vote will
increase.

Preston

Great idea to permit Internet voting, but it is unconscionable not to
provide paper platforms and ballots to an NSS member who doesn't have an
e-mail address or chooses not to (or has neglected to) tell the NSS what
it is. Sending him a postcard telling him to go to a friend's house to
use his computer is not a substitute. The NSS would still save 90 percent
of the cost.

I'm sure the response rate will increase considerably, but so will the
number of people who vote without bothering to read the platforms. Can't
have it all.

[Texascavers] Lost Oasis cricket count

For

Cavers,

The TCMA will be performing a cricket emergence count at the Lost Oasis Cave Preserve in south Austin on Wednesday 29 February. This is an
excellent opportunity for a couple of interested volunteers to come out with us and learn what is involved with this biological monitoring
technique. The Preserve Manager really only needs two people to participate in the training. First responses to Ron Ralph at
ronra...@austin.rr.com mailto:ronra...@austin.rr.com get on the list. Others are welcome to just show up and observe if they wish. Ron
will send the address and a map to participants who need such. Todd Bayless, the Natural Resources Specialist for Travis County (their karst
guy) will be doing the training. There may also be a discussion on red imported fire ant surveys and treatments. Meeting time at the
preserve is 5:30 pm. For more details, contact Ron.

Who knows maybe the % that vote will
increase.

Cavingly,

Preston

Subject: [Texascavers] NSS voting

Great idea to permit Internet voting, but it is unconscionable not to
provide paper platforms and ballots to an NSS member who doesn't have an
e-mail address or chooses not to (or has neglected to) tell the NSS what
it is. Sending him a postcard telling him to go to a friend's house to
use his computer is not a substitute. The NSS would still save 90 percent
of the cost.

I'm sure the response rate will increase considerably, but so will the
number of people who vote without bothering to read the platforms. Can't
have it all.
