[SWR] August Meeting Notes

2012-08-17 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
Meeting Notes August 14th, 2012

The August Meeting of the PBSS open at 7:02pm, 10 minutes after a
opinionated and probably near sighted individual commented to Tony and I
about the size of the table we were occupying. He obviously missed the
sign that indicated the table was reserved for the club and probably
didn't know the meeting was not yet at hand. I guess sometimes people
speak and don't think, or speak after thinking... only their thoughts
are a little on the short side of intelligent. Anyway. The table did in
fact fill up with Walter, Bill, Tony, Patrick and Matthew all in
attendance.

Walter gave a financial report. Currently $800.79 resides in the clubs
account.

Bill addressed an upcoming PBOC trip to Amazing Maze. The trip will be
on September 22nd and Bill and Jacqui and anyone else I presume that
wants to will lead a group of people from the outdoor club to and
through parts of Amazing Maze.

Matthew gave a report on the recent trip to Wen Cave and Christmas Tree
Cave in CCNP. Bill gave some history on the caves and recent pictures
from the trip were shown on a laptop. Trips to Chimney and Helen's Cave
were discussed and will be planned in the not to distant future. Patrick
commented a recent job change should allow him to make more caving
trips.

Bill gave a report on the National Convention. He gave more of a report
on the storm than the actual convention but lamented that those earning
awards were not appropriately recognized because the distraction that
the storm presented.

A large portion of the meeting was spent discussing access to a large
cave in West Texas. Prior to the meeting much time had been spent trying
to figure out if the PBSS might establish a relationship with the West
Texas land owner. At meeting time we were hopeful to get into the cave.
Since meeting time we have learned that relationships with the landowner
are very dynamic and access will be tricky.

The meeting closed at 7:41.

Hey Diggers,

There are 6-7 empty barrels to fill, come by on by Sunday, Aug. 19 at late
morning and help us dig. A tarp will shield us from the sun,
the digging is excellent, we are close to the North Passage. Bring lunch,

Two times a year the Texas Cave Conservancy hosts an open house for the
public to learn about caves, cave life and the aquifer as related to caves.
They are held each year in April and in September on the Saturday closest to
the 15th of the month. This year, the TCC CAVE DAY will be on Saturday
-September 15, 2012. We have had over two thousand visitors at a CAVE Day.
We always need cavers to assist in this public education effort. We never
have had enough staff to present our best information. Each year, we have a
number of cavers come out to the TCC Headquarters, stay in the campground
and go caving here in the Cedar Park, Texas area. We never have enough
caver support for CAVE DAY. We may have to hire non-cavers to assist us in
this event in the future. Please let us know if you can assist. You will be
welcome to stay at the campground and we will even buy food and beer that
evening. To the cavers that have come out and assisted, we send our thanks.
To those cavers that have assisted in the past and have been burned out by
too few workers, we say Thank you-Thank you for being there when we really
needed you. We will need workers to take visitors into both Avery Ranch
Cave and the Dies Ranch Treasure Cave. Last April, we had over 2000
visitors inside the two caves. This time, we have been forced to conduct No
publicity efforts except for our web site. That may reduce the number of
visitors and make it easier for our staff. For additional information on
CAVE DAY, check out our great web site at Texascavers.org/ Since we put
ithe web site online in April 2010, we have had over 653,000 hits. Once
again, to everyone that has helped make the Texas Cave Conservancy a great
organization. Thank you.

Texas Cavers,

Its time for another Honey Creek Tank Haul and we need cavers to help
haul dive gear on January 19th and January 26th for legendary
cave-divers Dr. Jean Krejca and James Brown. This is an
all-time-classic trip to an extraordinary cave and one of my personal
favorites! I am keeping the list of those interested please let me
know which dates you can make it. We already have 4 signed up but we
need many more!

Cavers are needed on January 19th to haul gear to Sump 1 for Jean and
James to begin their 2-day underground camp/exploration. On January
26th, cavers are needed to go to Sump 1 and haul gear out of the cave.
Camping is available both weekends and we will enter the cave around
9am.

Honey Creek is a water cave and you will need a wetsuit and harness
with d-ring to be lowered on cable down a man-made shaft. I recommend
flotation and water-tight food containers. The trip to the sump
typically takes 6 hours and includes walking, salamandering, crawling,
and "The Mud and The Crud". The trip is challenging but very fun.

Come for one weekend or both. This is a definite must-do trip for any
new caver and if you have already visited the cave, you know it's
worth seeing again.

Spread the word and please don't hesitate to ask me any questions,

Cavingly,

Mail Tribune

Arachnophobes beware: A new family of spiders has been discovered in two caves
south of Grants Pass.
The new species of Josephine County cave-dwelling arachnid has been given the
scientific moniker of Trogloraptor marchingtoni in honor of Neil Marchington, a
self-taught biologist and spelunker who helped bring the caves and its
eight-legged residents to the attention of the scientific community.
"It's exciting to be part of a whole new discovery of spiders," said
Marchington, 31, of Bend, the son of retired Medford teachers Scott
Marchington, now of La Pine, and Sally Marchington of Medford.
"It's remarkable, really amazing, to think you were in a group that discovered
an undiscovered species in the Grants Pass area," added Neil Marchington, a
deputy sheriff in Deschutes County when he isn't spelunking.
Marchington is a member of the Western Cave Conservancy who, along with
graduate student Tracy Audisio of San Francisco State University and others,
helped bring attention to the spider. Dead specimens were collected in 2010,
followed by live samples last year.
"We think this is a pretty historic moment in arachnology," said entomologist
Charles Griswold, 61, an internationally known spider expert at the California
Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
"This spider is so evolutionarily different we had to propose a new family name
to contain it," he added of Trogloraptor, Latin for "cave robber."
One of the caves is on private land; the other is on U.S. Bureau of Land
Management property. Those studying the spiders have requested the sites not be
named out of concern that visitors could damage the fragile underground
environment.
The BLM issued permits for the 2010 and 2011 scientific expeditions into its
cave, said Robin Snider, a biologist with the agency's Medford District.
"It was nice for us to have these people come in to study these invertebrates —
we don't have the skills they have," she said.
The agency's goal is to protect the cave from vandalism, she said, noting it is
very sensitive to intrusion.
"These spiders are in their own environment, their own microclimate," she said.
"We want to protect that."
Griswold, along with Audisio and postdoctoral researcher Joel Ledford at the
University of California-Davis, have written a paper that has been accepted for
publication in ZooKeys, a major zoology publication.
When Audisio first brought in a specimen, no one at the academy had any idea
what the creature was, Griswold recalled.
"We consulted all the standard reference works — it didn't fit into any known
family, living or fossil," he said, noting that detailed studies of its anatomy
and DNA also determined the spindly spider about the size of a 50-cent piece
was new to the world of science.
"We now want to continue the research on its evolutionary position," he said.
"How does it use those trap-like feet to capture its prey? Their claws are
long, looking like a scythe or a switchblade knife. We know they make a little
web and hang beneath it.
"But it has no obvious cave adaptation," he added. "It has functional eyes, but
they probably enable them only to see the difference between light and dark."
Since that discovery, a different species of Trogloraptor was discovered living
in the redwood forest of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, he said.
But Griswold, who found one of the spiders while visiting the caves in
Josephine County last summer, said the underground caverns are special.
"We know these caves harbor unique organisms that are very fragile," he said.
"And there may be other unique organisms to be discovered in these caves."
Marchington also stressed the importance of preserving the sensitive ecosystem
of the caves.
"It's important people realize anything they do in caves has an impact," he
said. "We need to be very mindful of what we do and how we protect these
places."
However, given the fact the spiders aren't warm and fuzzy looking, Marchington
doesn't think a lot of people will want to be around them.
"At one point when we were collecting them — I was crawling on my back — and
one dropped off the ceiling," he said.
"I screamed."

Perhaps the new report to be presented will help to substantiate the statement
in the article:

"The disease’s spores can hitchhike on visitors’ footwear and clothing and

Maybe I am not up to date on this but I don't remember this assertion being

Perhaps the new report to be presented will help to substantiate the statement
in the article:

spread from cave-to-cave."

Maybe I am not up to date on this but I don't remember this assertion being

Cavingly,

Ellie Watson

2012-08-17 Thread germanyj

I look forward to hearing about their findings. Until this article, I was
unaware that research on WNS is being conducted in lava tubes. Very cool.

Thanks for posting. I hope some of y'all can attend if for no other reason
that show support for their efforts. Be sure to wear some kind of caver logo
clothing.

Hopefully someone who attends can provide a recap on the SWR for those of us
who can not attend.

2012-08-17 Thread R D Milhollin
Perhaps the new report to be presented will help to substantiate the statement
in the article:

"The disease’s spores can hitchhike on visitors’ footwear and clothing and
spread from cave-to-cave."

Maybe I am not up to date on this but I don't remember this assertion being
verified to date.
