Re: [Texascavers] Airman's Cave related

2013-04-28 Thread Preston Forsythe
Ah, Airman's and memories of my classic trip to the very back of the cave with
Bill Russell, a few years ago. Who can forget the Birth Canal, the One-Legged
Man and to me the most famous passage, the Wire Wiggle. It looked like the cave
now has a gate. Does the UTG control the key? I thought the video was pretty
good for the 10 minute run. The primary light must have been a Mummut. A very
bright spotlight, too bright for the small passage. Hope to see you in PA in
early Aug...Preston in Western KY

One of the newest caving related videos on YouTube was uploaded last week and
is
an amateur helmet-cam video of the first section of Airman's Cave.

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHz-KatiuUE

Their is no narrative, but a few captions are added, which is a good thing.
There are three 70's mellow-rock songs for background music (
Crosby-Stills-Nash, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton )

There are at least 4 guys and they seem equipped enough for a trip like the
one they plan
to go on. And maybe there is somebody waiting near the entrance in case
they don't come
out.The videographer writes that this is his first Airman's trip.

I am sure he only posted this to show all his friends and subscribers and is
not meant to be
scrutinized by caver video enthusiast. But just for the sake of it, I
would like to point out the
helmet-cam is too shaky, the spot-light in the center of then entire video is
annoying.The
captions should mention that this is a warm dry dusty cave, and lightweight
cotton clothing is desired. And since you might be pushing your helmet in
front of you a few times, it is better
to use a crappy old lightweight helmet. And that you don't need a fancy
headlamp, but it
needs to be reliable and have extra batteries.

I haven't been to the cave in 20 years.I wish I could have gone there
when I was a teenager, because I would have enjoyed it a whole lot back then.
Had I seen this video as a teenager,
it would have most likely inspired me to go there.

The two guys in this film tagged along with the Cowtown Grotto trip, and
turned around right after the first long crawl, because one of the boys got
scared. They don't know anything about taking off their helmets (which, for
a trip to the Aggie Art Gallerie and back, they shouldn't need to).

Preston,
The City of Austin controls the key. These kids went in last Saturday,
which was the day of the Open House.
