What Frank did not say is that his student film about the Spoetzl Brewery won an annual award. It was the docunentary achievement award for "The Last of the Little Breweries," one of the Student Film Awards for 1977. The long answer is that in the early 1970s, Bill Russell funded my UT student film about the history of Shiner Beer. Shown to Texas legislators, the low-budget documentary built support for special legislation that made it possible for Spoetzl Brewery and later craft brewers to successfully compete with the mass market brands. Ellie, I have a great, large, framed photo which I took of the breakdown and the steel cable ladder from the bottom of The Devil's Sinkhole in the summer of 1955. It is much like Jimmy Walker's 1952 shot which appears in "50 Years Of Texas Caving" except without cavers. I will bring it to the convention to show but can't enter it as I don't know how to submit it for entry consideration. My daughters and I look forward to visiting with everyone.
