Re: [Texascavers] Scott Harden obituary - 2015 :

2019-10-11 Thread George Veni
I was working on this earlier today when I got called away just before sending
it...

Kurt Menking put together an obit that was sent to the Texas Caver. I don't
have the final version handy, but here is an early version Kurt sent me, to
which I've added a little.

Scott Harden, an active caver, geologist, biologist, mountain climber, and
friend passed away in early March 2015. He was a graduate from UT and a very
active caver in the 1970-80's. He spent a few years caving in the Austin area,
and made numerous trips to Mexico, in the early 70's to Sotano de las
Golondrinas, and numerous other caves. Plus he climbed Popo and other high
peaks in Mexico. After moving back to San Antonio, he was actively caving and
was involved with several projects including Honey Creek, Sorcerers, and others.

Scott tried to join the Alamo Area Chapter (AAC) of the NSS but was turned down
by the grotto because he was considered too young. Undeterred, he become an NSS
member, #12468, before being accepted by the AAC at age 15. His membership
application noted that he had visited 20 non-commercial caves, had been a
member of the original San Antonio Grotto, had 20 feet of 7/16" manila rope,
and was most interested in exploring, locating, geology, mapping.

He spent many years caring for his ailing parents in the 1990's and up until
his mom passed away in 2011. He didn't do much caving for the years he was
caring for his parents, and by the time they were gone his health had declined
to the point where he couldn't do much. He constantly emailed his friends with
humorous, goofy, and even insulting emails numerous times each day, and when
those emails stopped, and he wouldn't answer his phone, one of his friends went
to his house. When he didn't get a response, he called the police who
eventually discovered Scott dead inside.

Kurt organized a very nice memorial gathering on 16 April 2015 of over 30
people that included Scott's family and many friends.

Re: [Texascavers] New material on The Hall of Texas and Mexico Cavers

2019-10-11 Thread William R. Elliott
I forgot Scott Harden, of course. I knew him and was saddened by his loss.
I will try to search for his name soon.

It is good to have this web page because we tend to forget people after 5
or 10 years. They are not here to remind us any more.

I must say that researching departed cavers has been enlightening to me,
because they represent so much talent and varied experience. Ed Alexander's
obituary 10 years ago in the Texas Caver was very nice, but it lacked
anything on his very illustrious early caving career. So I wrote up his
caving history and tagged the obituary on there too.

One that I am working on lately is A. Richard Smith, a good friend, amazing
caver and TSS stalwart for many years. Recently I found the earliest known
pencil draft of a Mexican cave map in the AMCS flat files, by Dick from
Sótano del Arroyo. His loss in 2001 was a huge shock to many of us.
Probably many of us just kind of put his memory away for awhile because it
was too painful. I have gathered interviews, obituaries, and other neat
stuff about Dick Smith, coming soon.

I don't see Scott Harden's name on your list. George Veni probably has
information.

Subject: [Texascavers] New material on The Hall of Texas and Mexico Cavers

Dear Texas Cavers,

Sorry that I won't be at the Texas Caver Reunion this year. However, I just
posted nine additional biographies and obituaries on The Hall of Texas and
Mexico Cavers at http://cavelife.info/hall/hall.htm Mostly this goes back
through 2007, but some are earlier.

Let's remember the 10th anniversary of these cavers passing away:

Ed Alexander, Dick Beauchamp, Jack Burch and Carl Ponebshek. New material on
them was posted. I must thank Carl Kunath for publishing many obituaries in the
Texas Caver over the years. With help from friends I also found more
information on:

Marcia Cossey Littlestar (need her photo), Louise Power (got an additional
photo), Thomas Summers, and a recent death, Lee White.

I'm still lacking details on these lost cavers: Chip Carney, George Sevra and
Jerry Cooke. See them listed with a few clues at the bottom of the web page.

I now have digital files of 20 years of the NSS News, all of the AMCS
newsletters except the last three years, and some recent Texas Cavers. I have
special software that can rapidly search these files for the name of a person,
cave, or area. So, this is useful for several things. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks all,

William R. (Bill) Elliott
