Re: [Texascavers] Backcountry preps - part 2

2017-11-22 Thread Chris Vreeland via Texascavers
Yeah, we left your little truck about a mile from Potrero Redondo in ‘95 when
it would go no further, & it was all still there when we got back to it several
days later.

That was the trip that the Grey Pendejo got its name. The Holly carb on that
thing was crap & the linkage kept slipping out of low gear rolling downhill.
The water literally boiled off of my brakes at one of the river fords. I was
lucky the disks didn’t crack.

Re: [Texascavers] Speleo-ready truck

2017-07-10 Thread Chris Vreeland via Texascavers
I can guarantee that thing gets 10 mpg hiway, 8 mpg city. It's a year or two
newer than The Grey Pendejo was, but essentially the same truck with minor body
style differences. Not a smart long-distance choice unless you're unimaginably
wealthy.

Re: [Texascavers] The Texas Caver

2016-10-29 Thread Chris Vreeland via Texascavers
I was editor, or co-editor back in the mid-90's when we tried this, & it helped
a little for the first few months & all the correspondents slowly drifted away
from the idea mentally.

I had lots of capable help from co-editors - Jay Jorden & Jim Kennedy in
particular, & great proofreaders in Katie Arens & Joy Kennedy & a quality
printer in Terry Raines, lots of help with mailing from Gill, etc. I'm sure
I've left some people out.

Even so, it was a difficult, time consuming task, & beating the bushes for
material was the worst chore of them all. I wrote a small amount of it myself,
just to have things to fill issues. I worked at it for about 3 years total, &
while I got compliments & thanks, I endured enough baseless criticism &
pointless complaints that I don't think I'd go back to it mainly for that
reason, especially in light of the fusillades launched here on cavetex in the
last few days. (I briefly entertained the thought, then noped out after the one
from Kunath.) Back then, one person even complained that one of my issues was
too big & extravagant after I had decided to personally foot the bill for the
difference between the budgeted cost & the cost overrun to print it. I got no
response after pointing that out in a reply. That email exchange felt GREAT.

No good deed goes unpunished, indeed.

That was Charlie Loving. I have travelled internationally with Mr. Loving on 2

Camuy system. It was a trip in both senses of the word -- there are some

Re: [Texascavers] cleanup scheduled at TCMA's Lost Oasis Cave Preserve

2015-03-28 Thread Chris Vreeland via Texascavers
Reminder, The Lost Oasis workday is on for next Saturday. Gill is bringing the
chipper. Jim Kennedy and Ron Ralph are bringing chainsaws -- I was out at the
site this morning, we've got quite a bit of dead wood to cut, so I'm still
looking for folks to come help feed it into the chipper to help pull up
prickly pear.

Bring gloves bow rakes, if you have them.

We'll start at 9 AM -- the preserve is at 4019 Lost Oasis Hollow, 78739, across
the street from Bailey middle school.

Hope to see you there!

The Lost Oasis Cave Preserve in South Austin is having a cleanup day
Saturday, April 4th from 9 am until about 2 pm, or until everyone gets
 tired.

All in all, we could probably use 20-30 people, considering the
multiple chores we're hoping to take care of.

There are three or four dead trees that need to be cut, and a lot of
new-growth juniper that should be thinned. We would like to have at
least two people bring and operate chainsaws. We need another 6-8
people to be saw attendants and draggers. Gill Ediger is bringing the
big chipper so that we can feed these and several piles of old cut
brush into it and make mulch. Feel free to bring bags, buckets, or
tubs to take some mulch home for your yards. We'll have plenty.

We also need to start doing more active need to do fire ant control,
so we would like several people to bring big pots and boilers (and 3-4
five-gallon jugs of water each) so we can pour boiling water on the
mounds. There is a lot of this to do -- probably 50-100 mounds, so
we'd like four or more boilers and people unafraid to haul pots. Once
we know how many boilers we can have on site, we will coordinate
picking up propane tanks for same.

And if you don't want to drag brush or carry buckets of boiling water,
we have another chore for you. We will start thinning the profusion
of prickly pear around the cave, so bring bow rakes (garden rakes),
pitchforks, clam rakes, and other similar tools to help with that
 project.

Everyone should bring gloves and dress appropriately. TCMA will
 provide coolers with beverages.

After the work is finished, Preserve Manager Chris Vreeland will be
happy to open the cave for anyone who wants to see it. A helmet and
headlamp are required, but you don't need much else.

for a particular task, or to get directions.

[Texascavers] Nebo flashlight

2015-03-22 Thread Chris Vreeland via Texascavers
Not usually one to write this sort of stuff, but I just stopped by the hardware
store bought this on a whim:

https://www.nebotools.com/prod_details.php?id=31cid=16subid=94subsubcid=45

I like it because it's the same width as the body of a 2 x AA Maglight looks
like it'll be helmet-mountable with zip ties because it takes a single AA
battery, the kind I already have in my cave pack all the time for my mag lights
my camera flashes. It seems sturdy (time will tell). The clip is sturdy
enough, but comes off, which is probably for the best.

I compared it side by side with my Sten it's about as bright as the Sten on
the 2nd setting, though with a more concentrated spot quite a bit more
blue-ish in color. Seems like a great backup light for $9.99.

[Texascavers] Semi-impromptu dig trip to Lost Oasis 12-27

2014-12-24 Thread Chris Vreeland via Texascavers
Fellow Austinintes: Are you going to be bored out of your mind by Saturday
morning need an excuse to get out of the house for a few hours?

I'm heading down to Lost Oasis at 10 AM Saturday the 27th to commence to moving
some rubble, and would like the help of 3-4 people if anyone's up for it. Email
me back privately at cvreel...@austin.rr.com if you feel like hauling buckets
of rocks potentially squeezing though tight cracks.

Will probably just stay 2-3 hours, since I'm old out of shape.

A more worthwhile project would be something at Cave X, which I would

deliver them to the TCMA tent. If I make it to the reunion at all, it won't be
