[Texascavers] RE: [SWR] Background on the FOIA request to BLM
Of course, anyone who has worked on these sort of federal issues also knows that sometimes the agencies need counteracting pressures, like a FOIA request, to let them do the "right" thing. Way to go, SWR! Reasonable federal officials (and most are reasonable, well-meaning people) will not see a FOIA request as a confrontation action..just citizens exercising their rights. Louise D. [Texascavers] Solo caving
Although I like and support solo caving by properly experienced and thinking cavers, there was that horrible and tragic case of the guy in Black Cave, Arizona, about 10 years ago who went solo caving (without telling anyone his intentions) and his trapped body wasn't found for something like six months after he was last seen. About as grime as it gets. With the exception of Floyd Collins' entrapment in 1925 (he wouldn't have died if the local coal miners had gone to work promptly to free him) I challenge you to point to even one single modern fatality that has occurred because a person was caving alone. Houston caver David Locklear used to celebrate his birthday all by himself way back in Airman's cave and he is still with us. Thanks to everyone who showed up for this event. There were so many people and activities going on that Paul and I didn't have a chance to properly greet everyone but we are glad that you came out. In know, also, that Barb and Chris were happy to have such an appreciative audience. (Someone should have brought along Barb's fund-raising CD. I bet a lot would have sold that night!) I especially want to thank the folks who left us bottles of wine and other presents (presumably for the hanger warming/celebration part of the party?). I particularly want to thank the family that gave us the Carlsbad/White City plate! I'm afraid that I didn't open it until after the party but we love it. We may have to do a gathering again soon! [Texascavers] Reimbursements for ICS staff expenses
From: Michael and Melissa Cicherski 15th International Congress of Speleology, Co-Treasurers re: Expense reimbursement procedure Melissa and I would like to extend our appreciation to all who helped make the Congress a spectacular success. As we walked the campus and visited the community we heard plenty of cavers talking about what a great time they had in Kerrville. The Congress is unlike a typical NSS Convention in that we are required to close our accounts and balance the books in a relative short period compared to the NSS Conventions. If you have any unpaid expenses we would appreciate it if you would get them to us as soon as possible. [Texascavers] RE: ICS abstract deadline extended...NOT
Folks, I'm sorry but the abstract deadline is definately NOT extended. The Science C0mmittee is completely swamped and we set the submission deadline as late as possible. I am not guaranteeing that ANY abstract submitted after the December 1st deadline will be reviewed. The note from David Hubbard was specific to symposia chairs that might have needed to round out their programs. Abstracts that have come in since December 1st are being filed on the side until we have processed the abstracts that came in on time. We will then try to process ones requested by symposia chair. If my reviewers still feel they have time to review more abstracts, we will look at the others that come in. Frankly, with the holidays, I'm not optimistic. I really appreciate the wealth of submissions from Texas and other elsewhere, but we planned our deadline schedule as generous as we could accomodate and we aren't able to extend the abstract submission deadline except in very specific cases. I have processed, sent out for review, and sent the submitters acknowledgment letters for all abstracts received before the very last day (December 1st). However, there were literally a couple hundred submitted on the last day and those will take several more days to process. At this point I have no idea of how many of us are presenting papers at the upcoming ICS next July in Kerrville, but if you are planning to and haven't submitted an abstract yet, you have a little reprieve! See the following message from Dave Hubbard. Instructions for abstracts are on the ICS website at <http://www.ics2009.us> www.ics2009.us. It would be really great if we had a very large Texas presence at ICS, since it is being held in our backyard. I know a lot of us are involved with planning, facilities, field trips, and so on, but let's make sure we also give some presentations, enter cave maps and photos and so on in the salons, and, of course, have a huge number of us attend! This is an event of a lifetime. -- Crash --- Greetings Chairs and Co-chairs, Hopefully, most of your invited speakers submitted their abstracts by the 1 December 2008 deadline. Those that have not, still have a chance to get them in and accepted. I'm fairly confident that any abstracts submitted the remainder of this week will be accepted. Any abstracts submitted next week will be logged in and may be accepted as the reviewers finish with the on-time submittals. So please communicate with any of your invited speakers that may not have already submitted their abstract to do so ASAP. [Texascavers] RE: Cave BASE jumping
>An Omanie Golondrinaswhat cave is that I wonder? Probably Majlis al Jinn. Check it out on Google. It is First Drop of Majlis al Jinn, which is 111 m straight down. However, he rode it out to the lower, smoother floor, about 140-150 m below the hopping off point. Louise Hose -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
