[Texascavers] NSS BOG voted to add the New River Cave Preserve
The NSS Board of Governors, meeting today in Richmond, voted to add a 14th preserve to the NSS Cave Preserve system?the five-mile-long New River Cave, longest cave in Giles County, Virginia. It is the first cave preserve for the society in the commonwealth. Nearly a year ago Virginia caver Tim Kilby, owner of New River Cave, approached the Cave and Karst Acquisition Committee with a desire to sell the cave to the society. Tim has owned and managed this frequently-visited wild cave for 25 years and would like to see it preserved for future generations. He has permitted recreational, educational and scientific access to NSS members and to recreational cavers. It is the desire of the BOG that this continues. A management plan has been developed and will be finalized once a management team is in place. Cavers interested in serving on the management committee should contact Gary Moss. The acquisition includes two tracts of land of 13.6 acres and 0.38 acres. The $40,000 sale will be paid out over a three-year period for both tax purposes for Tim and fund raising purposes for the NSS. Surveyed in 1976, and updated in recent years, the 5.3 miles of passages makes New River Cave the longest known cave in Giles County and the immediate area. While the vertical extent is 359 feet, virtually all areas of the cave are accessible to the horizontal caver .A variety of trips may be tailored to the experience level and interests of cavers. The cave was among those featured during the 1995 NSS convention in Blacksburg. New River Cave contains one large waterfall, several small waterfalls, stream passages, many rooms, breakdown and alcoves. A trip to the back of the cave takes experienced cavers around 18 hours. The cave, while mostly linear, has some maze sections. The cave is formed along the Saltville Fault and has a wide variety of speleothems, although some damage to formations in the front part of the cave has occurred. The cave is in the process of being remapped by Dave West and a new map should be completed in the near future. It has been open to recreational caving for more than 70 years. Those interested in supporting this acquisition and keep cavers and the NSS owning caves, please send your donation to the NSS, c/o Cave and Karst Acquisition Fund, 2813 Cave Avenue, Huntsville, AL 35810-4431. - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

[Texascavers] The NSS REALLY needs your help this weekend!
We will be placing the floor leveling compound on the library floor this weekend. A company from Florence, AL, has given us a GREAT deal on the product. They are sending 1 or 2 professionals to place the compound. As we are supplying all of the labor for mixing and carrying the compound to the workers, we will need 8 - 10 volunteers to accomplish this task. The deal they are giving us is making this task cost less than HALF of what it would cost normally. The company will also be filming a promotional video for their use on this donation. Please come help us make our new library a reality! Indoor and outdoor camping available... and the NSS will provide pizza and beer for dinner Saturday night! [SWR] LAST CHANCE to save on your NSS Membership before the dues increase!!
LAST CHANCE!! National Speleological Society Dues Increase - Effective October 1, 2013 A dues increase, effective TOMORROW, October 1, 2013, was approved at the 2013 Convention Board of Governors meeting. In addition to the monthly "NSS News" publication, your membership in the National Speleological Society (at less than the cost of a tank of gasoline) connects you with ten thousand people around the world with similar interests in support of cave exploration, research, and protection. If you are not yet an NSS member, or have let your dues lapse for the past few months, right now would be an excellent time to become one before the increase. If you are a NSS Member, you have some time left to become a Life Member at the current rates (you're locked in at the current rate while paying installments if you don't choose to pay it all at once). The regular annual NSS dues will be increasing from $40 to $45; Life Membership will increase from $800 to $900. There are other membership categories at lower costs and a discount for Life Members over 59 years of age. You can easily join the NSS online, as well as watch an interview with NSS President Wm Shrewsbury about the dues increase, here: http://caves.org/info/membertypes.shtml Or you can go directly to the vimeo website and watch it here: https://vimeo.com/74835460 ___ SWR mailing list s...@caver.net http://lists.caver.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/swr ___ This list is provided free as a courtesy of CAVERNET

[SWR] 2013 NSS Convention -- Check it out!
There is a convention coming, and coming soon, to south-central Pennsylvania! http://nss2013.caves.org/ Cavers from Pennsylvania and surrounding states?and even some not-so-near states--have worked diligently to bring the Annual NSS Convention back to Pennsylvania, something many cavers from the Keystone State are too young to remember, especially if you were born after our nation's Bicentennial. The forthcoming convention includes an anniversary celebration of the Mid-Appalachian Region, a Howdy Party, campground party, banquet, and more. It should be a not-to-miss event this summer. And of course, get a Convention Guidebook: ?Pennsylvania Caves: A Guide to the Caves of the Shippensburg Area,? edited by Kim & Tom Metzgar, Walt Hamm, and Kerry Speelman, contains more than 300 pages of maps, descriptions, history, and information about caving in the Shippensburg area, as well as an overview/history of caving in the state. There are more than 80 pages of maps, descriptions and photos of caves just in the Shippensburg area, alone. Contributing photographers include Alan Horn and Gordon Ley, whose work was featured in last year's Convention Guidebook. Pennsylvania has many cavers who have been deeply involved with the NSS over the years. The Convention Guidebook offers a brief summary of their efforts. Have you seen a bunch of maps in places like "The NSS News" by someone named Bernie Smeltzer? Read about Bernie and see many examples of his work in caves that you will be visiting. Want to know something about a Pennsylvania grotto? Each grotto in the state was asked to contribute a history. This section also includes a history of former grottos. Did you know Pennsylvania has a cave protection law? The work of York Grotto, and of NSS member Judi Stack (among others) was crucial in getting this law passed. There is a history of the Pennsylvania cave law in the guidebook. Ever heard of Hosterman's Pit and wonder why you can't go there? A chapter on the history of cave conservation will tell you why. Want to know what the 25 longest and deepest caves are in the state? You know where to look? Want to know what the most cave-rich counties in Pennsylvania are? Also included. (*note* the guidebook chart on cave-rich counties dispels the myth that all of the caves are a long way from Convention.) Want to do a 400-plus foot deep cave in a county close to the convention site? There will be led trips to Big Ridge Cave. Yes? We DO have vertical caves here! Are show caves, or former show caves, your thing? The guidebook has you covered? And so does the Cave Booth volunteer crew. There will be led trips to one of the most spectacular caves in the state, Alexander Caverns, a former show cave. Another former show cave, Baker Caverns (entrance in the basement of a house), will be open one day only during Convention for special led trips. The Pennsylvania show cave owners have banded together, not just to support the Convention with ads in the program books, but to show their support to NSS members by offering discounts to cavers presenting their NSS card or their convention registration ID, at the time of Convention only. Are you a geology fan? Will & Bette White have completed an excellent chapter for the Convention Guidebook covering the geology of the Shippensburg area. In addition, Katie Schmid of the Loyalhanna Grotto and Thomas Feeney, a professor at Shippensburg University who is currently studying Cleversburg Sink, have planned a great geology field trip with a well-timed stop at Cleversburg. Jim Hart and Charlie Eichelberger have the Biology Section covered. Come find out about the latest cutting-edge research on the biology of caves and karst. History buffs might also find interesting a never-before-published documentary of Pennsylvania's link to not one, not two, but FIVE Mammoth Cave guidebook authors who have ties to the state. Pre-register so you can be sure to get a Convention Guidebook. There will be PLENTY to see and do in Pennsylvania this summer. [Texascavers] Seeking NSS Officer Candidates -- NSS Executive Search Committee
The NSS Executive Search Committee is seeking candidates for Administrative, Executive & Operations VP positions. Descriptions of these positions can be found at the NSS Website: http://www.caves.org/info/execsearch/ Persons elected to an officer position should expect to devote several hours each week to the job, incur out of pocket expenses, travel to various caving events and activities, and attend three Board of Governors meetings and two to three Executive Committee meetings each year. Given that Officers must attend more meetings than Directors, there is a funding available to assist with travel expenses. Persons interested in running for office are also strongly encouraged to review the Board of Governors Manual for more information on how the NSS operates. Still interested? If you know of someone you believe would make a good officer and would like to nominate, or if you are interested in running yourself, please contact the committee at execsea...@caves.org - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

[Texascavers] Illinois becomes the 20th U.S. state to confirm the presence of WNS in bats.
Springfield, IL - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) today confirmed the presence of White-Nose Syndrome (WNS), a disease fatal to several bat species, in four Illinois counties. The University of Illinois- Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), the United States Forest Service (USFS)-Shawnee National Forest, the University of Illinois' Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UIVDL), and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center-Madison, WI (NWHC) assisted in the discovery of WNS which was detected in LaSalle County in north-central Illinois, Monroe County in southwestern Illinois, and Hardin and Pope Counties in extreme southern Illinois . Little brown bats and northern long-eared bats from these counties were submitted to the UIVDL and NWHC in early-to-mid February 2013. Both of these laboratories confirmed the disease, while the fungal pathogen was isolated directly from a LaSalle County bat and a Monroe County bat at the INHS. [Texascavers] Something Good You Did. . . and You Probably Didn?t Know It.
Hello everyone, The URL link below is just one example of some of truly powerful things we can do as an organization--at virtually no cost--with our new NSS Headquarters Facility. http://blog.al.com/breaking/2012/12/santa_visits_seniors_hands_out.html Over the past couple of years there has been much discussion regarding the pros and cons of acquiring such a facility, but this is clearly an example of one of the good things we can do. And without a doubt, when we do good in the community, we reap the benefits as an organization. As a Grotto Chairman, I have witnessed this personally in my own community. Who knows when, by doing good in something that has virtually nothing to do with caving, a landowner or someone with influence sees what we're doing and decides to help our cause? Put simply, we will win when the community wins; And we will win in ways we could have never anticipated. But we still need your help and support to see this through. Please consider donating to the NSS HQ Fund before the end of 2012 and the tax laws change. And PLEASE consider having your local Grotto or I/O working together to support your HQ. Thank you, again, for your support! -Dean Dean Wiseman NSS#32690 RL, Director Chairman, NSS Public Relations Division - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com
