Re: [Texascavers] Longhorn Caverns SP Project Rides Off Into The Sunset
Man! My heart just broke. This is my favorite cave. Alex and I were just talking about making a trip soon! Sent from my iPhone On Jan 3, 2014, at 3:54 PM, Mark Alman texascav...@yahoo.com wrote: Merry Christmas and Happy 2014, y'all! I have had a few inquiries as to the status of the Longhorn Caverns SP Project. At this point, I have decided to put it in the Completed or, at least, On Hiatus state of things. The TPWD folks, the concessionaire at the park, and the project folks had a to do list at the park and, to the best of my knowledge, all have been completed. This past spring, the TPWD crews did a superb job on repairing the dangerous trail areas in the cave, replacing and, in some cases, installing new handrails, repainting other handrails, and an excellent job of cleaning up after themselves. This, after switching all of the lighting in the cave from incandescent to LED the winter and spring before. The Project had a very long laundry list and it has been completed, as well, except for additional mapping in the back areas of the cave, near the Crownover entrance. This entrance still remains inaccessible, due to a new landowner and permissions to access the cave via this passageway have yet to be resolved. Hopefully, someday, the additional survey points and data collected by the various surveys will be added to the Longhorn Caverns map and we will have a completed and thorough idea of the total length and lay of the cave! I would love to be able to present this completed map to the park, someday! Highlights of the Project leader list include improvements and restoration of the Lovers Lane area, and removal of dead fall, cedar, and other unsightly underbush in the sinkhole near the Visitors Center, and pushing leads in the Lumbago Alley section. Numerous other smaller projects were completed and I'd rather not list them all or bore you with them here. Some of the folks I would like to thank, in no particular order, are: Lyndon Tiu, Gerry Geletzke, Natasha Glasgow, Daniel Ramirez, Bill Larson, Edwin Lehr, George-Paul Richman, Mallory Mayeux, Andrew Alman, Allison Alman, Chris Franke, Leslie Bell, Jim Sheets, and a cast of hundreds of others who have come out to help and my feeble memory can't recall! Some of the groups I'd like to offer a HUGE thank you are the Aggie Speleological Association and the Greater Houston Grotto. The Aggies, especially, were the hardest working, most enthusiastic, and hardest partying bunch I have ever been associated with and the success of this project, Pre and Post ICS, would not have been possible without their participation! Finally, I would like to thank ALL of the Boy Scout Troops that have come out to volunteer and to camp. They performed a huge service to the park, plus, a BUNCH of new youth received their first taste of caving and many have gone off to become more involved. (Why more cavers prefer to NOT work with Scout and other youth groups is beyond me! They are a great resource of labor and deep pool of potential new cavers. Refusal to work with them has puzzled me for 18 years and y'all know who you are!) In closing, to all of you who have come out to help on the project since 2008, either for just one weekend or for several weekends, I salute and thank you! I will always remember the fun times, hard work, evening meals (at the Park or at The Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls), and the stargazing and camaraderie up in the Observation Tower on Saturday nights! To those of you who never made it out, y'all missed a VERY special project! If it gets resurrected or a special task at the park comes along, I'll be sure to let y'all know! Thanks and hats off! They are needing our help to lead groups of girls on caving trips on Saturday, January 12th. They are usually split into three (or four groups) and we typically visit Dynamite Cave, Turtle Shell Cave, and Cicurrina (sp?) Cave and, possibly, Gorman Falls. A short cave talk at the Park office is usually given beforehand and the girls will be providing their own equipment. Female leaders are especially effective with the Scouts, as they seem to like and appreciate members of the fairer sex who aren’t afraid to have fun and get dirty! I was planning on helping, as were the kids, as we have the last 6 or 7 ( 8?) years, but I found out my parents will be swinging through the DFW area to see us and, primarily, their two new great granddaughters that same weekend. Re: [Texascavers] Dirty old men
1) Caver or not, if a woman (or man, for that matter) would prefer to not be the receipient of suggestive sexual comments, then that's their choice. Some gals don't mind hearing randomly how sweet their ass is, others it might make uncomfortable. I would suggest that before one makes a comment of that nature, he or she should make sure that their relationship with the person at the other end of that comment allows for the respective level of offense. 2) In regard to the very open conversation of certain people's sex life. There is a line somewhere...and I'm not exactly sure where that line is in the caver world, but I'm certain it's been crossed. I know there were other projects going on last weekend (Deep/Punkin,Robber Baron Open House, Gov’t Canyon), so post away! The next LonghornCavern project will benext month, Saturday, December 3rd. From Gerry Geletzke Of the 19 that went in through the Crownover entrance, 17 made it to the second sump, two stayed at the first sump. The low air at the first sump provided about six or seven inches of air at its lowest point, a little more than Summer 2009. The second sump water level looked like it was down about three to four feet from Summer 2009 but it didn't provide any real additional passage only a larger terminal room. Mallory took several pictures of the second sump to document its current state. (One interesting note; Caleb found his initials and '2009' still clearly legible in the lower dirt sidewall of the passage between the two sumps.) On the way back to the Crownover passage Caleb, Mallory and I looked for and partially explored a couple of already identified leads but we did not want to get too far behind the rest of the group. All 19 of us took the Water Trail passage on the way back to the Crownover passage also. After regaining the Crownover passage, 13 exited the cave and six of us went over the dams and down the main passage to intersect with the Wigglies pit entrance. Your rope and carpet at the dams seemed to have weathered the last two years fine. We then entered the Wigglies and exited back in the Crownover passage. There was some water in the Wigglies but at the deepest point it was less that one foot deep. We then proceeded to exit the cave. I look forward to the next Longhorn work trip. Weird! We had a total turnout of 24 folks and a dog attend. GHG, A.S.S., TSA, and DFW Grottos well represented. Met Jim Sheets, the new Park Host. A very nice and accommodating gentleman and who will be very easy to work with. The LCSP staff is also very excited and welcoming and looking forward to having us down in the future. Julia Germany, Edwin Lehr, Natasha’s son, Peyton, and myself worked in the Lovers Lane area. We moved a lot of dirt and rock and began on the area directly below a pool of water (!) called the Pigs Trough. Julia and Peyton visited this area and took pix. We got a good start at rebuilding this area, covering the large drainage pipe, and obscuring the manmade dam that forms this area. We still have a lot to do and they gave us a thorough tour of the cave showing what other tasks they would like to see done and where fill can be located or relocated. Some of theitemswere: Fill in washed areas near both entrances to LL. Did out the encrusted mud on the trail near the Pig Trough. Complete rebuilding the drainage pipe are below the Pig Trough. Did out the mud filledtrenches in the LL area and area leading to Frozen Waterfall area. Unclog drainage pipe in Frozen Waterfall area. Fill in some other washed out areas. Ridge walk areas of the park, including a few new karst features that may/may not connect with the cave. These last two items are pretty exciting: Discussed with Christina and Brad about forming a 501C non-profit called “The Friends of Longhorn Caverns” that could do fundraising, etc. in order to pay for projects in the cave, much like Colorado Bend SP and other State Parks have. Julia is much more knowledgeable on this that me and knows all the how to’s and details. LCSP folks very excited about this. There is an area near Lumbago Alley, towards the Turnaround/Catfish Lake jump off that takes a LOT of water, according to Brad. They would love for us to dig this out andsee if there are additional levels of the cave. The tube is filled in with loose gravel and looks pretty similar to the Crownover Causeway and would be easy to dig out. The Aggies had a good time celebrating someone’s 21stbirthday (I forgot who) Saturday night and the Bluebonnet Caféin Marble Falls was excellent, as usual. Much pontificating accomplished at the top
