Some of you old-timers may recall at 2010 Convention many attendees still used

I even saw far less laptops this year.

I was surprised to not see many tablets.

My el cheapo Chinese phablet from MetroPCS did a great job,

[Texascavers] NSS Convention related

2018-06-19 Thread David
I have had more spare time this week that I was hoping for
( sort of on an unexpected work furlough )

So I have been surfing the web.

CheapOair just sent me an alert that they had a flight offer.

Their new offer today was a really good deal, but I did not take it.

The problem with their offer is that the discount flight are alternative
dates, that leave ( to come home )
on Friday, August 3rd, at 2:30 p.m, so if I did that
I would have to be at the airport by 12:30 on Friday. Meaning
anyone doing that would miss most or all of the Friday activities.

The cost difference to leave on Saturday is substantial - nearly $ 300.
( The perk to leaving on
Saturday or Sunday, is that you can tell everybody goodbye, and relax
getting to the airport, instead
of just yelling across the room "Goodbye Everybody" and having to
hight-tail it to the airport in a taxi )

I still do not plan to go to the convention this year.

I have no idea if I will have work today or tomorrow, or next week or next
month,
and to add to that problem, my living situation today is borderline
dismal.I thought I
had clawed my way up out of the abyss that I had fallen into last August (
after Hurricane Harvey ),
but it was an illusion.

I am certain of one thing though and that is that I am going
stir-crazy.
But it is so hard to tell, as I was going stir-crazy a long time ago.

[Texascavers] NSS Convention related

2010-07-20 Thread David
I have found enough riders ( strangers off of Craigslist ) to get me
to and from Vermont.

So in theory, the cost of driving will be minimized.

So, I am leaning towards making the road-trip.

The logistics of picking up these riders is going to most likely
complicate the drive and slow me down, but if they help driving
then maybe that will even things out. Right ?

Can 32 hours of driving be done safely in 2 days, or do I need
to plan on 3 days ? How are the other people driving planning
on managing this road-trip ?

Depending on if I have a responsibility to go or not is the controlling
factor in deciding whether I go or not. With WNS getting so close I would
hate to go to a convention where I wouldn't be caving. Additionally I
prefer larger conventions and the smallest I can recall going to was
Washington which I know had more then ~120 people.

Herman,

Even if you aren't elected to the NSS BOG in 2010, there are other ways to
serve the NSS. Maybe you should go to the NSS Convention to find out what
positions are open in the NSS structure and serve in one of those capacities.
It is a great way to learn what the NSS does, identify issues and problems, and
to develop some ideas on how to improve the organization. In addition, serving
the NSS is an excellent stepping stone for the BOG. By going to the NSS
convention, can also expand your support base by meeting new folks from outside
the area as I don't think that Texas has enough members that vote to directly
elect someone. Also, there will be caving in Vermont and I understand some of
the marble caves are very cool - no pun intended.

2010-04-27 Thread Josh Rubinstein
This is my old haunting ground. And there is some rather remarkable caving,
esp. Crane Mountain Cave which is a striped marble cave and one of the caves
offered in the Pre Con trip (www.nss2010.com/pre_and_post.php) Of the led
trips during convention ( http://www.nss2010.com/caving.php) Morris and Red
Mountain are real one-damn-thing-after-another caving. The others I am not
familiar with.

As for WNS, I follow whatever is asked of us. At the convention, they ask
that we from non-WNS states NOT bring our caving clothes and they will
outfit us with helmets, lights and coveralls which I think is pretty cool.
(You might want to bring some polypro since they are 42 degrees F.) Non of
the caves open for the con harbor more than an occasional isolated bat.

it is still early for registration. I suspect the final total will be 500
or so.

C'ya there,
Josh

2010-04-25 Thread David
I only see 2 Texas cavers pre-registered for the convention.

I will most likely have to skip this one.

Is anybody else going?

They only have 120 registered according to their web-site.I presume that
is because of the economy and WNS, and not a lack of interest in the
convention or the location.
