[Texascavers] TCMA news

2015-01-09 Thread Ron Ralph via Texascavers
Cavers,

Ezells Cave Preserve in San Marcos, owned by the Texas Cave Management
Association, is in need of a new gate. Many years ago the cave was permanently
sealed and the small population of Myotis velifer bats was denied access, which
cut off the nutrient supply for many rare and endangered denizens living in the
lake below. Later, the gate was removed and sporadic use by bats was noted by
visitors. Later still, a new gate and concrete platform were installed which
did nothing to enhance bat populations to return, although a few tricolored
bats (Perimyotis subflavus) have been noted in recent years. A new gate is
envisioned that would reopen the window into the aquifer and help restore the
ecology of the cave.
So how can you help?

We have already applied for and received a Landowner Incentive Program grant
but we need more to offset the greatly-discounted $13,000 price tag for the
construction project. A lot of the design work and equipment is being donated
by Jim Kennedy through his business, but we will need additional funds for
steel and welding supplies. We also need to pay a welder. Please go to the
Donate section on our website to pledge today. For those who wish to donate
additional funds, we are giving you an opportunity to have your name welded on
steel. For every $100 donation, we offer to put your full name on a length of
steel which will be incorporated into the gate. Lesser donations may entitle
you to steel initials.

And we will need many volunteers to need carry steel from the street to the
cave, lift bars into place, remove the old concrete platform, and clean up the
site after the work is complete. We will keep you posted on our construction
schedule via e-mail and Facebook.

If you wish to donate your time and labor, call Ron Ralph (512-280-0648) or Jim
Kennedy (512- 663-2287) and you will be added to the volunteer labor sign-up
sheet. The Texas Blind Salamander (Eurycea rathbuni) will thank you.

Ron,
Put me down for a $100. donation as I hope to visit Ezell's Cave one day since
it is in "my neighborhood". I prefer to pay by check so will need to know to
whom payable and the address. Isn't there a caver welder who would volunteer
his labor?

Yes Fritz, we will use Lydia, a caver welder but will probably need at least
one other paid welder. Also, some of the materials may not be completely
covered by present donations. My goal was to give cavers like you an
opportunity to support the cause and I have succeeded. You can mail a check to
the TCMA:

Texas Cave Management Association
PO Box 7427
Austin, TX 78713

Just note in the memo section that it is for Ezell’s Cave new gate and write
out your full name for us to weld onto steel. Thanks a lot for your
contribution and your support.

2015-01-09 Thread Julia Germany via Texascavers
Hi Ron!

Questions base on:

We have already applied for and received a Landowner Incentive Program grant
but we need more to offset the greatly-discounted $13,000 price tag for the
construction project.

How much did TCMA receive from the TPWD Landowner Incentive Program?

How much hard cash is still needed?

What is the value of the equipment and services that are being donated?

Knowing this information makes it easier to reach out to potential sponsors
when you can tell them these things.

I am thinking, as an example, to reach out to a company that could provide the
steel. Your awesome idea of having names/initials engraved into the steel
could also be offered to the corporate donors. Their names could be on the
steel, and on the kiosk.

Can't wait to see the Texas Blind Salamander doing the happy dance!

[Texascavers] TCMA News and Changes

2011-02-18 Thread Allan Cobb

Hi all,

I just wanted to announce that TCMA has had several changes in our Preserve
and Property Managers.

I would like to thank our managers who are leaving. Aimee Beveridge has
been the Preserve Manager at Godwin Ranch for many years and has decided to
step down. Godwin Ranch is a preserve that is used mainly for research and
biomonitoring due to it endangered species. Peter Sprouse has been the
Property Manager for our management agreement with UT Lands. The main caves
we manage on UT Lands are 09 Well and Amazing Maze. Both Peter and Aimee
have been managers for TCMA since 2004. TCMA thanks them for all their
years of hard work.

Matt Turner has is stepping down as Preserve Manager of Lost Oasis Cave. He
has not been in that position for long but he decided to take over
management of a different preserve. Matt will continue as manager of
Whirlpool Cave.

I would also like to introduce and welcome their replacements. Matt Turner
will be taking over as Preserve Manager at Godwin Ranch. David Ochel will
be taking over as Property Manager for the UT Lands caves. Ron Ralph is the
new Preserve Manager for Lost Oasis Cave. Welcome managers and thanks for
taking over.

Each of our new Preserve Managers have big shoes to fill from their
predecessors. If you are interested in helping on any of the preserves, feel
free to contact the Preserve Managers. I'm sure they would welcome any help
offered. Also, don't forget to thank the outgoing Preserve Managers for
their service.

Thanks,
Allan Cobb
TCMA President
