Re: [Texascavers] doing sinful things in caves

Several years ago...
There was a large group pushing and surveying parts of Longhorn Caverns,
through the Crownover entrance. The treasure hunters who originally opened
that entrance left a kerosene lamp in a large room past the log entrance crawl.
Someone lit the lamp on the way in and someone else extinguished it. Thanks.
This caused the long crawl to be flooded with dense smoke due to the strong air
at the time. Poor Russ Johnson got gravel in the bib of his overalls and he
got stuck at one point. I was seriously concerned that one of us would succumb
to CO. Maybe we did?

Re: [Texascavers] doing sinful things in caves

2014-12-23 Thread Don Cooper via Texascavers
Worse than passing gas...
Many moons ago when the earth was still cooling and access to caves like
Whirlpool was had for nothing more than a secret handshake, (and I had bad,
bad habits which I would never repeat these days) -
Myself and a companion went as far up the extent of that cave we knew of to
a 'dig' area with mounds of soft calcite sand where we took a break, drank
a couple of celebratory beers and "partied" for a while in deep dark -
"wow, man" - of the cave.
As we exited, we noticed that we had proceeded beyond the large amount of
smoke we had created back there - but if we stopped, it'd catch up with us
again.
Interesting phenomena. The cave was breathing outward and we had a
"marker" in the air.
As we got into the Travis County room - we encountered a group of FIRE DEPT
and LAW DEPT officials on a rescue training mission!
Not tarrying - we quickly exchanged small talk and fake names as we exited
the cave in anticipation of the deadly smoke that was coming from behind us!

Some people actually have allergies to the smoke and/or asthma that can be
agitated by it. Not a good recipe to smoke in a cave when your caving buddy
could have serious health problems because of it.

Bill,

It's not that I think the smoke is going to kill me, I just think the smell is
deeply unpleasant. It also makes my clothes reek. I have never smoked a
cigarette in my life and so have never needed to get used to the smell...

Cheers,
Stefan

No doubt I did from time to time. (I'm one of those SOBs who quit
smoking only once.) I still don't see any problem with it. Apparently
some people have come to think that the merest whiff of cigarette
smoke will kill them, and then some people have come to worry about
the wee beasties in the cave. Never noticed any lack of wee beasties
like spiders and roaches in the homes of people who smoked (not that
kind of roach, you who have evil minds). The whole anti-smoking thing
is silly.

And a conservation-minded caver dumped his spent carbide under a rock
or down a hole, where it wouldn't be conspicuous. It hadn't been many
years since cavers had stopped smoking their NSS numbers on the wall
at the end of a difficult cave. I saw the numbers of some pretty
famous cavers. -- Mixon
