[Texascavers] Sort of Houston related

2019-09-19 Thread David
This is mostly a correction to my post 48 hours ago.

Rainstorm Imelda hung around, ( as forecasters warned was possible ), but
only dropped about 8 inches of rain inside the city limits of Houston.
Surprisingly some specific low spots that always flood, had severe to
extreme flooding and caught a lot of people by surprise ( even though they
had 4 days of warning ). A majority of people probably missed work
today. So many people in southeast Texas ( thousands ?? ) do not have a
high enough IQ to understand the term "flash flood." I almost got
caught in this one, as it was so hard to skip work, but I sheltered in
place.

On a totally different note,

I was driving yesterday in a part of Houston that I had not been in 23
years. It was where my caving friend, Charles Haskett, had fallen out of
a tree. The old run-down neighborhood had many new homes and the tree
was gone.

Also, in other news

An old caving acquaintance whom I very deeply admired, Victoria
Arbizu-Sabater, has returned to live in Spain.

GHG old-timer, Mike Connolly is still trying to get healthy.

I have survived 5 weeks renting a room from my Craigslist roomlord.

On another topic,

I do not know if I met Lee White at the past NSS Conventions, but he
sounded like someone who I admired.
2019 has been a difficult year for the caving community.

Another rant,

It is going to be interesting next week to see how many of the newly
developed areas flooded ( ones retardedly built after Tropical Storm Harvey
). I say storm, because Hurricane Harvey never hit Houston proper.

Why are Houston school buses and gov't vehicles here not better at handling
high water ? But more importantly, why do officials park them in low-lying
areas to purposely let them flood ?

Also,

All the caving discussions are clearly on Facebook now.

[Texascavers] Sort of Houston related

2019-03-14 Thread David
>From David Locklear
***Please hit delete button now***

I have been completely out of touch with cavers in my region for over 8
years.

I have no idea who the active cavers are or what they are up to.

I normally can not commit to anything whatsoever. I always have to do
short spur-of-the moment road-trips on my own and usually leave on Sunday -
be back Monday night late.

As of now, Thursday night, the 14th, I do not yet have to be back in
Houston until Sunday night, but would prefer to be back Sunday around
lunchtime.

I am just not set up to drive more than 4 hours alone. I easily get drowsy
while driving especially after 2 a.m. on dark stretches of rural road.

Unfortunately, I can predict or guestimate that a client will call me
tomorrow afternoon with some totally ludicrous task that pays peanuts.
And that task will require me to work Friday night very late, possibly way
past midnight.

But I can't turn down the income, as I have no other means of support.

Sort of like, when you are going over Niagara Falls, it is safer to be
inside a barrel. Right ??

[Texascavers] sort of Houston related

2018-12-12 Thread David
>From David Locklear
( hit delete button now, please )

Normally, by mid-December, my business is dead as a door-nail. But
due to Hurricane Harvey, there is a tremendous backlog in the work that
I do, and I am currently swamped.I could possibly hire a caver
in Houston to do a delivery for me - maybe several between now and the
first week of January. The delivery would involve driving 50 miles and
putting
up with some ridiculous bureaucracy, and the receiver of the delivery would
likely not be happy to see you, and might have to be delivered on Christmas
Eve,
or Christmas Day or NYE or New Year's Day. The pay is somewhere between
peanuts with sea-salt and honey-roasted peanuts, and might not even cover
your gas.

On a similar note, I urgently need to find a good roommate. I have a sweet
apartment now, but there is no place to park a car.

I will be celebrating Festivus on Dec. 23rd at my apartment, and should have
ice-cream and soft-drinks, and hopefully a cold six-pack of Smirnoff Ice.

I am hoping to make a caver NYE party, if there is a good one going on. I
doubt I can go to the one in Huntsville.

I would like to watch my favorite caver rock-band, GFB, perform in the near
future.

There is a 5 % chance I will end up in the Mexican bordertown of Reynosa
during the last
week of December and a 5 % chance I will end up at my sisters in Mansfield,
south of
Arlington.

On a personal note, I have had about 10 customers pay me on-line this past
few weeks using
things like Zelle, PayPal, Cash app, Chase Quickpay, and SQUARE, but still
living above
my means. Those use my business email:da...@houston-subpoena.com

In summary, going caving is not feasible right now, but I have finally
found my vertical gear,
after many years of it being boxed up.I hope to buy a new headlamp by
February.

2019 will be the year of Desktop Linux ( a Linux joke )

Cheers,

D.L.
