RE: [ot_caving] car news
David, You seem pretty knowledgeable on hybrids. Is there anything out there that is suitable for offroad/caving use, yet able to seat 4? I love my diesel F250, but filling it up is killing me. [ot_caving] car news
In my opinion, the hybrid car news is not very exciting. I haven't seen anything new to talk about in months. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=124622 Saturn has an SUV called the Vue which had a very limited supply of hybrids. It got poor reviews and was listed as one of the worst hybrids. Saturn defended itself, by saying that they were only trying to sell the least expenisve hybrid. But they finally woke up, and in 2009, the Vue will run solely on electric power exactly like the new Yukon and Tahoe hybrids. The design is slightly different as the Vue is front-wheel drive. Some things you might notice on 2008 and the coming 2009 models is that variable valve timing is probably on every car now. Nearly all cars have aluminum cylinder heads, and many have aluminum blocks. If you buy a late model car, take a note at the emissions label on the side window. Does is say LEV, or ULEV, or SULEV? In my opinion, you should by a car with the best emissions label? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SULEV Cylinder-deactivation is more common now. You will find it in in nearly every brand. The silly thing is that each manufacturer has a different acronym for the same exact thing. DOD, VCM, MDS, One possible new thing to look for in cars is the dual-clutch transmission, will be more common place in the next year or 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual-clutch_gearbox And certainly more lighting will be LED, so the probability of replacing bulbs is reduced, and less electricity is required from the car's electrical system. [ot_caving] car news
Dodge dealers now have BlueTec diesel 4x4 trucks in stock. BlueTec is Mercedes most efficient technology for diesels. Rumors are that it will be in the diesel Cherokee next year. I still have not seen a 4x4 version of the diesel Cherokee. Has anybody else? Nissan dealers are now selling trucks with flex-fuel capability. Meaning they can run on 85 percent ethanol. I still haven't seen an ethanol pump yet. I have seen hybrid cars on used car lots. They are way too expensive. My theory is that people will lose money selling their hybrid cars, as the buyer will not want to pay extra for it, like when it is a new car. The buyer may also be concerned that the hybrid parts are needing replacement which is expensive. Truck Trend magazine this month has several interesting news articles on 2009 model cars, featuring a new improved hybrid Chevy Truck based on the alledged Chevy Hybrid Tahoe. I still haven't seen a hybrid Tahoe or Yukon, yet. Nor have a seen a hybrid Nissan Altima, Saturn Auro, Mercury Mariner, all of which are supposed to already be on the market. And the tiny Smart Car is supposed to be coming to the U.S. Honda cancelled the 2008 hybrid Accord. I don't think there were many 2007 models, as I think they stopped production of them early on. Does anybody else have any interesting car related news?
