Re: [NMCAVER] Karst topography found on Saturn's moon Titan
See the article at: http://is.gd/9IEMJ Anyone up for a trip? Lee Skinner Does anyone know where White Canyon, Utah is, and its geologic context? I'm skeptical that the karst terrain image shown there at the above Web site displays limestone karst topography--though some features might reflect gypsum karst or piping pseudokarst. It's surely not alpine karst, and I know of no extensive low-elevation surface karst in Utah. --Donald ___ NMCAVER mailing list nmca...@caver.net http://caver.net/mailman/listinfo/nmcaver_caver.net
Re: [NMCAVER] Karst topography found on Saturn's moon Titan
I just want anyone who is planning a caving trip to Titan, Mars, or the Moon know that I am available to serve as the team's field archaeologist should you encounter any exo-cultural materials; I could use a long vacation. Unless, of course, you are planning to survey The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis. Being attacked by brain-eating parasites sounds too much like my actual job. http://www.eldritchdark.com/writings/short-stories/231/the-vaults-of-yoh-vombis - Original Message - From: DONALD G. Donald, I am not familiar with White Canyon, Utah, but a Google search reveals a canyon by that name in the Lake Powell area. It appears to be a slot canyon, at least in places, in sandstone. Hmm, perhaps. But I don't agree that White Canyon, Utah is representative of karst topography at all. The interesting area certainly hosts an array of classic slot canyons (I've engaged in canyoneering in some of them) but there's no significant limestone and/or gypsum present. Here's the geologic map and stratigraphic column for your perusal. Posted by J.P. Buchanan at 7:09 AM http://geology.utah.gov/online/mp/mp08-3.pdf --Donald On Mar 5, 2010, at 10:40 AM, DONALD G. Re: [NMCAVER] Karst topography found on Saturn's moon Titan
I have hiked a section of White Canyon, Utah, an area I believe is called the Black Box, and I agree that it is not karst topography. It is mostly, if not all, formed in sandstone, like other Southern Utah slot canyons. While there could be limestone layers present, the canyon has been formed through erosion and is not a solutional feature. In spite of that, it is a spectacular hike, and even a little cavey in places. - Jon From: DONALD G.
