Here is another ultra-capacitor flashlight, apparently from the firm that created the energy storage technology. Lightning Flashlights or http://www.lightningflashlights.com/ The light is variable, and produced 200 lumen on high beam, but only runs at that capactiy for 25 minutes, then goes into low power mode for another 20 minutes. It lasts 90 minutes at standard beam, plus the 20 minute auto emergency level. However, I could find no price and when I followed the "partners" link to a retailer they were selling the "Light for Life" instead. "Ultracapacitors" are what's used in the shake and shine flashlights. Remember those? Advantages to Super Capacitors: 1. Can be used and recharged millions of time. 2.Low impedance - enhances load handling when put in paralleled with a battery. ( I think this means a flashlight could be designed to run longer with less batteries ) 3.Re-charge in seconds. 4.Simple charge methods - no full-charge detection is needed; no danger of overcharge. ( thus easier to charge in cigarette lighter, Right ? ) Limitations to Super Capacitors: 1.Linear discharge voltage prevents use of the full energy spectrum. ( I think this means LED light goes out immediately, instead of running dim for several hours ) 2.Low energy density - typically holds one-fifth to one-tenth the energy of an electrochemical battery. ( thus more bulky than a AA battery ) 3.Cells have low voltages - serial connections are needed to obtain higher voltages. Voltage balancing is required if more than threecapacitors are connected in series.( I think this means more of a problem with brighter LED lamps ) 4.High self-discharge - the rate is considerably higher than that of an electrochemical battery. Is the Ultracapitor similar to a fluxcapacitor? So if you get a lot of superbright LED's that are powered by a fluxcapacitor and get it to spin at a high velocity, will it make you A. Go back in time? B. Go forward in time? C. Smell like spent carbide as it heats up? D. However, I always thought the problem with the ultra-capacitors was size, and that the unit would never fit into the housing of a flashlight. Let's hope it works and lets hope somebody builds a headlamp. On a related note, Sports Authority is now selling a fully waterproof LED flashlight suitable for mounting on the side of the helmet, and suitable for all the extremes of wet caving - waterfalls, whirlpools, duck-unders, rapids, etc.It was $ 58 I think and not only is it a bright yellow neon color, but the headpiece glows in the dark.
