[Therion] Trapped in Therion on Error

2015-06-05 Thread Michael Wasmund
I had similar symptom when the background bitmap used for the scrap is
extremely large. In that case needs to be replaced by smaller bitmap.
Also suggest to check whether UTF-8 is the right encoding for you or wether
it should be ISO8859-1 (if you're in Europe).

Regards, Michael.

Please, check first line in plain text editor, it MUST be encoding code
there. Only one time!

Another problem could be an invisible character somewhere. Check it by line
numbers.

Programers text editor may help much.

5. 6. 2015 v 5:40, Rob Countess :

Just a total shot in the dark but I had something similar when I copied and
pasted from a text editor into therion editor. The therion editor. I ended
up doubling the first line the text encoding line (UTF blahblahblah) which
was not entirely obvious because the therion editor seems to hide that line.
Once I fixed it the problems went away.

don't open it in the editor. Since I can't edit the file in the editor I'm
using trial and error to clear it up in a text editor. But it's a pain to do
trial and error when I get stuck with a non-responsive program each time I
have an error.

Is there a way to make it so that I can at least close the program on error?
I'm on Windows and in order to close the program I have to open task manager

close the program the hard way.

[Therion] FW: How to mark a preferred way through a cave

2015-05-28 Thread Michael Wasmund
Thanks, Markus, for your suggestion and kind offer!

Actually meanwhile I can manage the mix of bitmaps and genuine scraps quite
well,
thanks also to help by forum participants.
Perhaps I should make a Wiki article about bitmap processing with Therion
summarizing "best practice".
I may need your help in other issues, for example, obtaining geo data for
surface modelling. I'd then contact you directly.

Michael.

Hi Michael, (in english so all can understand it, but not be angry about the
poorness :-)) I know your project of "Fuchslabyrinth" and so I may say: for
the future it will be the best Idea to draw the cave or the old bitmaps new.
I know, it is very much work. But after you will have no Problems to add new
parts and you will have all advantages of Therion. Assumed you have the old
data of the centerline, that is clear.
Some years ago, I have done the same with "Vetterhöhle" (2,5Km) and
"Bärentalhöhle" (now 440m). The Vetterhöhle was drawn in AutoCad and that
was a problem for me and others because of the very costy program and the
use of it. The Bärentalhöhle was drawn simply with Tusche (is that the same
word in English as in german?). 400m was not so much work, but enough. But
today I`am lucky about that doing, because every year there comes some
meters in addition. Drawing the Vetterhöhle in Therion was another thing,
but at the end it was the best which someone can do.
"Fuchslabyrinth" is very longer and so very more work, but in the end you
will be lucky too.
If you want, I can give you an offer: Give me the data and the corresponding
bitmaps and I will help you part by part. So I have additionally an
advantage; I don`t forget Therion :-) Greetings Markus

PS. All other please over directly message in german :-)

If I understand correctly Dave's suggestion of user defined lines will only
work if you draw scraps, and I don't think that is what you are asking for
(although drawing simple scraps with only station points and route lines to
overlay your bitmaps might be your best solution).

I hesitate to suggest this, but if you don't mind using a nasty hack, you
could, for example set...
flags approx
...on the route, and then redefine l_survey_cave to emphasise the approx
centreline and make recessive other line flags.
An example of the sort of code you could use is here

http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php/metapost?s[]=approx#general_symbol_ex
amples
"Visualize cave centreline shot flags with colour for splay and duplicate,
and dash for approximate shot flags"

This will only work with pdf and probably svg outputs, and will have no
effect on 3d outputs.

Regarding Footleg's comment:
Therion indeed turnes "black" bitmaps into "grey" bitmaps, see attached

Perhaps this is something which could be improved in future versions?

[Therion] Redefining PENA...PEND to draw lighter

2015-05-19 Thread Michael Wasmund

Hello,
Does someone have metapost code to redefine PENA...PEND to draw grey instead
of black?

Why I need this:

My survey consists of 80% scanned bitmaps and 20% drawn scraps.
The bitmaps are "grey", not black (can't make them better using image
processing).
The drawn scraps then stand out and look ugly compared to the bitmaps.

I know how to redefine individual symbols (walls etc.) to be grey instead of
black,
but rather than redefining a large symbol set I'd rather redefine the PENs -
if possible.

Michael.

[Therion] Embedding cross-sections based on bitmaps

2015-01-28 Thread Michael Wasmund

Hello,
I'm familiar with the method of embedding cross-sections made using scrap
editor. That works.
For our 10km - cave, we have 100's of cross-sections scanned from paper
(i.e., bitmaps), drawn decades ago.
How can I embed those? The method used for scanned paper surveys seems not
to work.
Whatever parameters I use, the cross-section scrap remains invisible.
(Pls don't tell me we have to re-draw all the cross-sections)

Regards,
Michael.

Hello,
Generating and embedding cross-sections based on scraps is well described

My question: How do I imbed a cross-section which was not drawn using scrap

Whatever parameters I use, it will not show, remains invisible.

Can someone send me an example or point to the location where this is
described?
(Pls don't tell me I have to redraw 100's of cross sections using

PNG with transparency?

Save the overlap pictures as png with transparency.

[Therion] How can I suppress white space around centerline stubs ?

2014-08-23 Thread Michael Wasmund
Hello,
For Fuchslabyrinth cave, we're using mainly morphed bitmaps.

With the standard thconfig settings, centerlines carry a "white channel"
along with them,
blanking out any bitmap content near the centerline (see attached image).

Is there a way to
a) define the centerline so that the white space around it is not generated
?
b) define centerline so that it is always drawn (e.g. not only the stubs) ?
c) define centerline so that it is never drawn (regardless of "point
station" definitions) ?

2014-08-23 Thread Michael Wasmund
Hello,
For Fuchslabyrinth cave, we're using primarily morphed bitmaps.

With the default thconfig settings, at areas where bitmaps overlap, one of
them is "half-transparent".
(See attached image)
I played with the "opaque" parameter, but the results are not what we want:
opaque = 100: overlap area shows one of two bitmaps only.
opaque = 0: All bitmaps vanish completely.
opaque = 10: either bitmaps are drawn in extremely light colour, hardly
visible.

What we need is full visibility (100%) of either bitmap, regardless whether
they overlap or not.

Any hints how to achieve this ?

If this is not possible, is there a way to control which bitmap is on top ?

Thanks, Stacho !
It's the "identify.exe". Replacing it with the 5.3.10 version solves the

Hi folks,
Sorry for bothering you with this - but the attached simple data (hope it comes

5.3.0.11. I verified again today. If someone could test the attached data on

  Michael

I have tested this issue with 5.3.10 and 5.3.11 and they both work as
expected on my Windows XP machine.

Ie 5.3.10 gives multiple sketch insertions.

5.3.11 works perfectly, presumably as per the design intent.

A Happy New Year to all Therion users !

Therion 5.3.11 claims to have solved the "sketch inserted multiple times"
problem

and I would be very thankful for that.

However, when I process my data with the .11 version,

I always get a "file not found" for the sketche's images. (The sketch editor
works fine).

Using exactly the same data with 5.3.10, it works well (with the disadvantage
of the "multiple insertion").

  I'm using Windows. Perhaps a "backward-slash" problem ?

Just wanted to touch base if someone else encountered this behavior or who
can recommend a quick fix.

[Therion] background sketch inserted multiple times

2012-11-04 Thread Michael Wasmund
Hello Bruce,

I think we're suffering the same inflated PDFs.
I attach a small project which uses 3 very tiny PNGs as input,
resulting into a PDF which is at least 3x the size in MB.
With large bitmaps, a PDF is produced which some computers cannot handle
anymore because of size.
We also use Therion version 5.3.10.

For the "Fuchslabyrinth" Project, we have an additional issue which is at least
as painful:
Overlapping sketches (even if the inserted PNGs are transparent)
lead to a PDF output, where passages in the overlapping area are concealed.
Current workaround is to crop the PNGs razorsharp at the passage boundaries,
but that is not always possible.

See attached mini-project.

If you or the Therion developers have a "fix" for either issue,
we'd greatly appreciate receiving it!

Cheers,
Michael.

I think you just added a wiki item on Fuchslabyrinth caves where it says
Therions bitmap morphing feature is being used.

I am intrigued because in 2008 or 2009 we were starting to use this feature,
then we were delayed, and by the time we got back to experimenting there was a
bug in the next version of Therion whereby the sketches were inserted into the
pdf outputs multiple times, taking inordinate time to compile and making the
pdf files very large, 100's of megabytes in many cases. Stacho acknowledged
the bug and I think some change was made in 5.3.9, but it did not fix the
problem for us.

  Described here
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.therion/2680/match=sketches

I have tried again with a couple of different files using 5.3.10, in one
trivial case a 283kB sketch inserted in a small map produced an 11MB pdf file
(the pdf without the sketch is 300kB).

So I am wondering how you are making it workable?

  Either;

  - something in our custom metapost or layouts is causing the error
for us and you are not experiencing this bug, or

  - you are using an old version of Therion in which this feature was
bug free, or

  - you are putting up with very large output files, even for very
small portions of your overall project

  I'm interested in your comments.
