Unless you're using an older version of Thunar, this shouldn't happen
anymore. The text renderer used for the shortcuts pane will
automatically ellipsize the name.

Perhaps just dropping the removable part to make it "1G media" would be good
enough. A label that long would comfortably fit in most peoples shortcuts
pane and still provides (arguably) the same information as the longer label.

Obviously something like this doesn't deserve its own preference.

"1G removeble media" is a pretty useful name actually. Size is a good
way of telling the devices apart if they don't have a label - even
non-technical users would find this easy to use.

The problem I see here is with long labels in thunar for any device.
For example if I insert a CD labelled "Photographs from Holiday" this
pushs the divider over to the right to fit all the letters in, which
looks a little ugly and means my three columns on icons in the
right-pane becomes just two. Also, when I remove the device thunar
doesn't move the divider back again.

Perhaps the device label should be shortened to "1G rem... ..media"?
When you hover the mouse over the name it could give the full label in a
tooltip. Alternatively I guess you could have a configuration option
for changing the label thunar shows for all removeable devices, so the
user can change: "{S} removeable media" (where {s} would be the size) to
"{S} flash" if they so wished?

I agree with you in that the label is too large for the side pane. I
can't think of any better names, though. "1G-Datenträger"/"1G medium"
for instance might be shorter, but something's missing in that one.

However, I wouldn't waste any time into making this an option. Rather
find something shorter.

I'd argue that the name that thunar provides is much better than 'a random
device node name' and doesn't confuse people with technical intricates of the
unix system. try sticking 5 usb sticks into your system and remembering which
one was sdb, sdd, sde, sdg etc... :)

definately this should not be a gui option. maybe hidden, nothing more.

Nope, because I don't want to set a label sometimes (e.g. it's not mine
usb-stick).

Sounds like a totally useless option... I'd rather have a right click
option to set the label like that.

[Thunar-dev] disable the "xG removable media" label

2007-01-27 Thread Evgeni Golov
Hi,

the latest Thunar shows my USB-stick as a "1G removeable media" ("1G
entfernbarer Datenträger" in German), because I didn't set a label when
I formated it. Of course I could set the label now...
In my eyes, the 1G... thingie s too long for the left pane, and I would
like to have the old-style sdXY one, if the partition does not have an
own label.

Is there any possibility to add a config option for that? Like:
-
What to display, when a partition does not have a label set:
[ ] The GNOME-ish "xG removeable media" pseudlabel
[X] The old-style devicename
-

TIA
Evgeni
