[tw] Re: Regarding Puppy

2010-01-07 Thread shavinder
Hi David,
Try puppy! its great, its a dekstop linux with good looking GUI. I
have been running off a USB stick for many months now. You would have
to get used to rox filer(its a desktop manager like Gnome and others
but is very minimal). The right click context menu is very different
from ubuntu or windows other full desktops OSes. For example the best
way to copy/move a file from one place to the other is by opening the
source and target folder in separate windows and just click-dragging
the file. It then gives you option of move or copy. Its different from
rightclick>copy>paste paradigm :)

Abiword comes bundled with it but I am not happy with it. It does a
very poor job of dealing with MSWord files. Its better to separately
download Open Office SFS files, which you can search on puppy forums.
Besides Open Office you might be interested in installing Pidgin
(multiprotocol chat client) and Firefox (of course). Both are
available as PET files which just install in seconds. You can find
links for these on forums.

Like tiddlywiki puppy community at IRC #puppylinux is quite helpful. I
think you ought to try the standard version first and later digress to
modified ones which are known as Puplets.

[tw] Re: ToodleDo Import Export or intergration

2010-01-07 Thread Anthony Muscio
Further Info;

ToodleDo and many other applications has Import and export functions.
Both CSV and XML (and more are provided). XML is the Gold Standard for
Data interchange.

What would be nice is a tool in TiddlyWiki which can interrogate XML
(without style information) in a tiddler, Allow you to view the items,
filter the items on any field, and along with an interactive interface
create a mapping XML field1 < - > Tiddler Field 3 (or Tags) etc... to/
from Tiddlers and the XML and save in another tiddler.

Then a macro can be configured to convert xml in source tiddler using
a predefined map and filter into tiddlers
and
a macro that can be configured to convert filtered tiddlers in a
source tiddlywiki using a predefined map and filter into a new XML
tiddler or file.

This should open tiddlywiki up to a whole host of applications
integration.

The only complexity I can see is that Tags are stored in a single
field in tiddlywiki but may not be in the XML and some times
conversion may be required eg; Not completed may be indicated by an
empty date eg; -00-00 and you may want to change this to a
"completed" tag.

Any way food for thought

[tw] Batching on click

2010-01-07 Thread Anthony Muscio
Gurus et al..

I have two items in a menu that when I click on them they do as I ask;

Save Changes
<>

and
Wiki Backups
<>

The thing is I find I usually follow one with the other. That is I
click one then the other.

Is there a way I could put the above in a single tiddler such that
when I click on an item in the menu both are performed as if I clicked
on them both. This would be a great way of allowing a simple form of
batching.

Thanks in advance

FYI Explanation of WikiBackups
Wiki Backups is a windows compiled batch file that runs the following
@echo on
if not exist C:\Data\WikiBackups\*.* echo creating folder
if not exist C:\Data\WikiBackups\*.* md C:\Data\WikiBackups
xcopy S:\Wiki\WikiBackups\*.* "C:\Data\WikiBackups" /M /Y

This will thus backup only the changed backup files generated by
lessbackupsplugin to the C: drive of the hosting computer (Home Work
and Girlfriends). Very quick - very safe practice.

A curious observation the application "Bat to Exe converter 1.5" is on
CNET and and "Tested spyware free" but my attempt to see the publisher
site http://www.f2ko.de is blocked as;
Access Denied (content_filter_denied)
Your request was denied because of its content categorization:
"Spyware/Malware Sources;Spyware Effects/Privacy Concerns"
For assistance, contact your network support team.

Is this an example of "censorship" of practical tools because a hacker
used them once to create spyware ? and the tool can be found elsewhere
anyway.
It is not what we know but what we don't know we don't know.

I would agree that Zotero is worth a second look because it has come a
long way in a year. Eventually, you will want your bibliography
database to help you write your dissertation with a cite-as-you-write
feature. Zotero plays well with either Word or Openoffice.

[tw] Re: Looking for some feedback

2010-01-07 Thread David
Thanks, Anthony! I appreciate the positive feedback. You are right on
both counts. The tiddler names I used in this example got a little
confusing, partly because I went through the development very quickly
and started without knowing where I would end up. These definitely
need an update. You are also spot on about navigation up and down the
hierarchy, and that has to be given some thought (I'm open to
suggestions). Right now, for a proof of concept, I was satisfied that
I could look at a tiddler in one of the display boxes and click the
headline and open it in edit mode in the main story. You are right
that going the other way is not very intuitive. Again I'm open to
suggestions.

I'm sure your thoughts about icons and cookies are good ones, but
that's beyond my current skill set (though I think I could probably
manage to get an icon to display where I want it). I hope this winds
up being a bit of a collaborative effort, especially when it comes to
plugins and macros and other more technical stuff. I'm sure there are
a lot of ways to approach it, and if indeed it becomes part of TW or a
"variant", much more thought will have to be given to all kinds of
questions, such as whether Fluid 960 is the best framework to use, how
it should be packaged (theme?), and how much can be made more
automated for users. Probably a lot of other stuff I haven't even
thought of yet.

Just glad to have the positive feedback, and glad to hear you're
interested in trying to integrate it with other TW tools.

Re: [tw] Re: Annoying WikiWords

2010-01-07 Thread Anthony Muscio
Just a suggestion perhaps to combine with Erics Suggestion;

You may see this in your viewTemplate.

This means that tiddlers tagged css','html','pre','systemConfig are not
wikified. What about using
http://www.TiddlyTools.com/#TaggedTemplateTweak
to
allow selective wikify and no wikify. You could also modify the customised
view template to present code in a particular colour or other code
related information such as drop downs to specify the object etc...

The reason I suggest this is that despite the hassles wiki links can also be
a great way to document and references (that identify everywhere a wiki word
is used) will allow you to update all code that used that function etc...
when you come up with a better way.

Love it - Tiddly960. It is the kind of revolution TiddlyWiki could use to
maintain it's leading adaptability with a little more user friendliness it
could be compulsory. Constructively The Names of the tiddlers in the wiki
could be more user friendly. BlurbOne is not really intuitive and is
not visible in the box itself - you need to follow a chain of information
which maks me ask;

Could there be an automatic way, perhaps an icon in the top left hand corner
of each element where you could open the source tiddler. This would make
development and customisation very simple with an individual cookie allowing
it to be disabled and a global cookie to disable all icons
from appearing (optionaly onced published).

Once again thanks for a great example of a flexible analytical approach to
development.

Craig,
I have difficulty following the taggly Tagging instructions. Can you
possible give me a summery of the main points in implementing it in
tiddly960. Please please please.

Thanks Tony

2010-01-07 Thread David
Hi Alex, no I had not tried MPTW, but I had looked at it before. I
just tried the tutorial and I can really see the advantages of the
TagglyTagging features. I also really like the layout. I'm going to
spend some more time with it.

I tried Zotero a year or two ago and it never quite stuck, partly
because I use Safari almost exclusively, and partly because I found Z
wasn't quite doing what I wanted. I know it has evolved since then and
I really need to take another look at it.

Great suggestions!

Re: [tw] Re: Including all TW files in a given folder

2010-01-07 Thread Anthony Muscio
This is not a direct answer but why not make a tiddler containing the short
names of you external tiddlywikies eg;
FROM <

USE
MyTWFile1
MyTWFile2
etc...

Then make a macro to einclude all listed
in part
<

This is thus a trivial process of adding the short name to a tiddler which
may itself be automated.

Good luck

[tw] Re: A list of tiddlers based on custom fields

2010-01-07 Thread Jakob Graulund Jørgensen
Hi Tobias

I know the way I have done it may seem a little counter-intuitiv. The
reason I cant do it the other way around is that in the larger TW
where I am trying to implement the solution I only "know" each
tiddler's parent tiddler(s) and I can't think of an easy way to
reverse this (ei I don't what to sort through all tiddlers to make
sure I've caught all of a tiddler's childeren)

Allthough you could probably do what you are suggesting using the code
below. The lack of numbering is however kind of a dealbreaker because
I need the trees created to be very precise as to what tiddler is own
by what.

/%

I hope this made sense. As I am writing this it is kind of late in
Denmark.

[tw] Re: How do I change a particular font

2010-01-07 Thread David
I'm assuming that you mean you want to change the font of the text
between {} when it is displayed (not edited).

Add this line anywhere in your StyleSheet. Change to the fonts of your
choice. If you are displaying this on the web you will want to list
several fonts, which will be selected by the user's browser based on
the first match with installed fonts, going from left to right.

pre { font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; }

A list of browser-safe fonts can be found here:
http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html

If you want to change more than the font (such as size, etc) check
this page: http://htmldog.com/reference/cssproperties/font-family/

Fonts are separated by commas. Font names with spaces must be put in
quotes: "Times New Roman"

I am uncertain if the tag is used elsewhere in TW, so if this
changes your font in places you don't want it changed, we'll need more
specificity.

Re: [tw] Re: Research citations questions

2010-01-07 Thread Alex Hough
David,

ROLLING YOU OWN
=
Have you tried MPTW? (http://mptw.tiddlyspot.com/ ) The newHere command in
the toolbar is good for working from a formal reference to shortened
versions. You can soon see the effects in the advanced 'taggly tagging'
section at the bottom of each tiddler.

I use it with YourSearch (Abegbo) and GoTo plugin (TiddlyTools)

ZOTERO - it is good give it a go, it could save you time tiddling

Personally I am convinced that a number of small tools working together in
the browser is better than a TW only solution. For me FireFox with
Delicious, Ubiquity, Zotero have been working well together for a quite some
time.

There are some features of Zotero that, once you have scratched the surface
of the problem of, you would be frustrated that TW can't and will not able
to perform.

One of the most convenient is the automatic downloading and filing of PDF
files of papers. There is also a search inside PDF feature, so you can
search the text of the refs as well. You can publish your refs using a
syncing mechanism and also create groups which enable other people to sync
their refs.

Another is the export feature: it can export in wikipedia style, so a
mediaWiki to TW converter might be a way to get refs into TW.

(I, and many other TW fans / addicts have been sucked into the kind of
vortex as it becomes a conduit for imagination - Morris gave a particularly
vivid description of this). TW _can_ do everything imaginable but it might
take many light years before you acquire the know how and before you know it
you have forgotten what you mission was. )

PODCAST

I enjoy listening to Digital Campus ( http://digitalcampus.tv/ ), a podcast
from the academic team behind Zotero. They chew the fat around the meaty
subject of digital scholarship.

I think you missed the application name. And I don't think that the
plugin is able to get the right program out of the jpg file name.

[tw] Re: Tool to compile story or other tiddlers

2010-01-07 Thread Måns
Thanks Mark

It's a brilliant addition to the backpack of great tools available for
TiddlyWiki.
Eric's SplitTiddler transclusion and your Compile Story script are
good companions...
I often use spreadsheets and other programs to process similar tasks
with tiddlerdata-
with these tools I can stay with TiddlyWiki all the way - I love it! -
Thanks.

Maybe you could even add some of the functionalties from Eric's
SplitTiddler transclusion?
Choose tiddlers to include by title, tags etc - option for setting
linebreaks interval between compiled tiddlers... get a list of
tiddlers to compilation to rearrange order ... that said - I think
your script is doing a great job as it is.

Re: [tw] Re: Research citations questions

2010-01-07 Thread Neil Olonoff
Regarding snips and clips: There seems to be a general desire to convert
records of various types from bibliographic tools into TiddlyWiki.

Is it possible to create a macro or upload script that like a "mail merge"
that will upload records to Tiddlers from a delimited file.

I just laboriously uploaded content from my Kindle DX clippings.txt file
which could easily have been converted to a delimited file using word,
textwrangler, or whatever.

Just a thought.

[tw] pulling my hair out over LaunchApplicationPlugin and relative links

2010-01-07 Thread Dave Parker
I've read several messages and versions of the LaunchApplicationPlugin
that claimed that it supports relative links, but I can not get it
working. I'm trying to launch image files for editing (i.e. defaulted
to open in mspaint.exe), so I don't want to just use [[edit|
filename.jpg]] which opens the image in the browser.

The image file is in the same folder as the TW file. Here's what I've
tried so far to no avail:

My TW version is 2.5, the LaunchApplicationsPlugin version is 1.4.0
from here

http://twhelp.tiddlyspot.com/#Launch%20Applications%20Plugin

and my browser is Firefox 3.5.7 on Win7

What am I doing wrong?

Re: [tw] Re: Research citations questions

2010-01-07 Thread Alex Hough
I'd use Zotero to grab the citations: databases offering Endnote metadata
imports into Zotero. They can be then dragged into TW or cut and pasted in
your preferred format.

If I am not mistaken, the wikipedia citations added to each page by users
also is available as Zotero data.

It would be great if there was a plugin which could add this data to TW. A
kind of TiddlySnip for reference data

[tw] Re: Research citations questions

2010-01-07 Thread Mark
Here's some options for question 1:

The YourSearchPlugin enables you to "search the extended fields
("Metadata") introduced with TiddlyWiki 2.1, e.g. use priority:1 to
find all tiddlers with the priority field set to "1"."

You could then serach: author:Gardner

To generate a list of all the books by Gardner

http://tiddlywiki.abego-software.de/#YourSearchPlugin

Eric's SearchOptionsPlugin provides more options:

"Adds extra options to core search function including selecting which
data items to search, enabling/disabling incremental key-by-key
searches, and generating a list of matching tiddlers instead of
immediately displaying all matches. This plugin also adds syntax for
rendering 'search links' within tiddler content to embed one-click
searches using pre-defined 'hard-coded' search terms."

[tw] Regarding Puppy

2010-01-07 Thread David
Shavinder: Your talk about Puppy Linux on a usb stick got me very
curious, so I've done some quick searches on it. One unanswered
question for me is, does Puppy come with a GUI (or can one be added)?
I've avoided Linux because I'm a spoiled Mac user who has never even
opened Terminal (though I did use command line interfaces back in the
dark ages). Just wondering about GUI.

[tw] Re: Display only latest tiddler with some tag

2010-01-07 Thread Måns
Just recalled another dirty hack:

tiddlertitle: OpenToday

var title = new Date( );
title = title.formatString("DD MMM ");
store.saveTiddler( "DefaultTiddlers", "DefaultTiddlers", title );

tag with systemConfig

It opens a tiddler with todays date, even if it hasn't been made yet..

[tw] Research citations questions

2010-01-07 Thread David
I am really finding TW useful in organizing my academic research for
my residency project and thinking forward to my dissertation. I have
checked out BibblyWiki and some other TW tools, but I think rolling my
own is going to be the best path. I have a few questions:

1. I have already figured out to add Extended Fields to my view and
edit templates, and have begun experimenting with FET to find tiddlers
based on those fields. I also have the plugin that lets me view
different templates based on tags. I have been following some of the
FET examples provided, and can set up something like this:

<>

I put this in a tiddler, open the tiddler, and the list of books by
Gardner shows up magically. But now if I want to search for books by
another author, or by some other field, I have to make a new tiddler
with those changes or edit this tiddler. Is there any way to create
some kind of search form where I select the field and enter the search
criteria and it gets passed to this tiddler macro so that I only need
one search tiddler for basic searches? Also, is there any way to
integrate searching on tiddler content and on extended fields at the
same time?

2. Wikipedia

I remembered Wikipedia has templates for making citations, that allow
you to enter the data in a structured but flexible way (fields are
optional), and the display is a well-formatted citation. Would there
be any way to do something similar in TW either with a macro/plugin or
with transclusion of tiddler slices?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CIT

Example wiki markup

Displyed result:

Cordell, Bruce R.; Grubb, Jeff; Noonan, David (September 2001). Manual
of the Planes. Berlin: Wizards of the Coast. pp. 198-203. ISBN
0-7869-1850-8.

3. context variable

I have seen a few references to the context variable, but I have not
found any doc that explains exactly what it is or how to use it. I'm
guessing it has something to do with div ids to either locate parts of
a tiddler, or the location of the tiddler in the display. Could
someone point me in the direction of a definition and an example of
use?

I guess that's enough questions for today. Thanks!

[tw] Re: Tool to compile story or other tiddlers

2010-01-07 Thread Mark S.
Well, in case anyone else sees a use for this, here it is. Done as a
inline javascript that needs to be transcluded from a side menu. Like
<>. BECAUSE -- you don't want to be compiling
and possibly deleting the tiddler that's running the script! Test
before using, etc.

This takes all the tiddlers in the current story, and packs them into
the top tiddler in the story. There may be other ways that would make
more sense, but that's the way it works at this point. All the other
tiddlers in the story are deleted.

The goal was that, if you have collected a half dozen snippets with
TiddlySnip, that you can quickly pack them into one tiddler. That was
the goal, but I've figured out an entirely different approach to
collecting web info (Using NoteTab pasteboard mode plus "Its all
text").

Mark

//{{{
// This script should not be run from a tiddler that is
// part of the story!
var first = true;
var summaryTitle = "AccidentalTitle" ; // Need more scripting to
protect against empty story
var who, when, out,tags,fields, summaryElement ;
story.forEachTiddler(function(title,ele) {
//tid = story.findContainingTiddler(tid) ;
 tid = store.getTiddler(title) ;
 if(first) {
//var tid=store.getTiddler(t);
summaryTitle = title ;
summaryElement = ele ;
var who=tid?tid.modifier:config.options.txtUserName;
var when=tid?tid.modified:new Date();

var tags=tid?tid.tags:[];
var fields=tid?tid.fields:{};

[tw] Unable to Save TW with IE8

2010-01-07 Thread MauriceB
I've just discovered TW and have down loaded both TW 2.5.3 and also
the MPTW.
>From the help at :- Dave Gifford's TiddlyWiki for the Rest of Us and
his slideshow introduction
 and Morris Gray's TW Help - TiddlyWiki help file for beginners
I am aware that difficulties are sometimes experienced Saving TW when
using IE.
I have used the Save option but no matter what, I can't
get my changes saved.

The error I get is:-
It's not possible to save changes.
Possible reasons include:
 - your browser doesn't support saving. (I'm using IE8.0.6001.18702,
Windows XP Pro 5.1 SP3)
 - the pathname to your TiddlyWiki file contains illegal characters.
(E:\Temp\MyTiddlyWiki.html)
 - the TiddlyWiki HTML file has been moved or renamed.

When I joined this group I received a message from Google that "You
need to enable active scripting and activeX controls".
I have a number of sites which use java and activex but I'm not sure
about 'active scripting' ?
The basic facilities in TW all seem to work except for the ability to
save.

Where to from here?

[tw] Re: Display only latest tiddler with some tag

2010-01-07 Thread Eric Shulman
> The next question would be how to revert to default behavior (just in
> case..) :)

Just disable the one-line SetDefaultTiddlers plugin tiddler, by
either removing the 'systemConfig' tag, or adding the
'systemConfigDisable' tag. After you save-and-reload, the standard
default shadow value will once again be used.

Alternatively, you can leave the plugin enabled and simply create an
actual DefaultTiddlers tiddler containing a space-separated,
bracketed list of tiddler titles to open upon startup. Then, it won't
matter if the SetDefaultTiddlers plugin is still enabled, as the
shadow tiddler value will never be used if a real DefaultTiddlers
exists.

[tw] Re: Including all TW files in a given folder

2010-01-07 Thread Tobias Beer
I don't think it is possible, though I would be rather excited if it
was.

If you wanted that kind of automation, maybe an option would be to
have abstract names in a sequence... like files called.

a.htm
b.htm
c.htm

...and whenever there's no "d.htm", your IncludeScript would simply
stop.

[tw] Re: A list of tiddlers based on custom fields

2010-01-07 Thread Tobias Beer
Hi Jacob,

As for the tree being "upside down", shouldn't your root rather be
something like "the universe"? Shouldn't your relations or "pointers"
therefore better be the other way around?

So instead of

child->"parent"

where parent is the field-value at your child tiddler, you' rather
have:

parent->"child1 child2 child3"

where parent is the tiddler and that which is related through the
field-value would be the child-tiddlers. As in the example above,
wouldn't it make more sense if you'd only have one field containing
all those "related" tiddlers as a "bracketed list" ...similar to how
tags are managed?

At least, that way earth would point to two child elements... northern
and southern hemisphere + you'd have your tree the right way around.

As for numbering the tree, I fear, that isn't quite what
RelatedTiddlersPlugin was designed for, since the order by which it
builds the tree is somewhat arbitrary ...depending on the order of how
you gather "related tiddlers" and how the tree is recusively being
built.

2010-01-07 Thread Jonnan
Thank you - I concede I don't understand the syntax enough to
understand why that works, but it indeed does.

And 'til I do, another bit of voodoo code for me to wave like a dead
chicken - ! I likes me dead chickens to wave!

Thanks again
