[time-nuts] Lady Heather Ver 5 Problem - full screen mode

2016-12-12 Thread Mark Sims
Ahhh, full screen mode... the demon mode from hell. On most modern systems
with large monitors it crashed the program. It uses DirectDraw and if your
DirectDraw implementation does not handle your monitor size, bye bye Heather.
That means full screen mode (or clicking the MAXIMIZE button or pressing F11
crashes Heather unless your monitor or graphics driver was a standard VGA era
screen res like 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, or 1280x1024). Only those four
monitor widths allow full screen mode. Monitor height is not check for.

Because pressing the MAXIMIZE button was quite easy to do accidentally, full
screen mode is disabled by default (but F11 can't be disabled). If your
monitor / graphics driver is one of the magic sizes you can enable full screen
mode with the new /fu command. For instance for a 1024x768 screen try:
   /fu /vm

If you have a larger monitor and can configure your display driver for one of
the magic sizes, that works.

The /f command now brings up Heather in a windowed mode sized to fill (most of)
the screen. You can also do that with $f from the keyboard.

[time-nuts] Lady Heather Ver 5 Problem

2016-12-12 Thread Mark Sims
Microsoft recently pushed out a WIN10 update that broke DHCP and a few other
networking features. It's affecting LARGE numbers of systems worldwide. The
most common symptom is that you can no longer get to the internet since Windows
can't find your router, but other more subtle glitches have been reported.

Once I ticked the right one, it opened up.

NOW, how does one get it to run in full screen mode. I tried the /f

Any ideas ?

The error message in question came from the IPCONN::connect() method in
ipconn.cpp. That particular code (11004) is returned by gethostbyname() when
it fails to resolve a DNS name. Normally, when Heather tries to connect to the
test server, gethostbyname() is used to turn "ke5fx.dyndns.org" into a numeric
address that can be passed to connect(). If it returns 11004, it means that
the client's DNS provider was able to find a record, but couldn't actually
resolve it.

Should just be a temporary glitch in the Matrix. Nothing specific can be done
about it AFAIK.

[time-nuts] HP 58503A chassis part needed

2016-12-12 Thread Stan
Hello,

I'm in the process of restoring my 58503A. In the process of disassembling
it, the rear plastic frame that is held to the back panel with the two T15
Torx screws had become brittle with age and it cracked into several pieces
as I was removing it. It will be difficult to get all of the small pieces
glued back into place, so I'd rather just replace it with an intact part.

I have a spare rear frame from another HP bench instrument in my spare parts
bin, but much to my surprise I found that the center-to-center hole spacing
of the screws on the 58503A frame is about 7.5", whereas on all of the other
HP bench instruments that I've checked it's only about 7.375", so my spare
frame does not fit. Does anyone have, or know where to get, the proper rear
frame for my 58503A?

Thanks,

Stan

Re: [time-nuts] Time math libraries

2016-12-12 Thread timenut
Eric,

I speak as someone who has implemented many calendrical packages. I have
always tried to achieve the maximum degree of generality, and have considered
the issues with leap seconds on more than one occassion.

The first problem with leap seconds is that you need a list of them, and that
list needs constant updating. If date/times are maintained in a standard form
such as seconds since the beginning of an epoch (e.g. 0 AD) then even the
conversion into a conventional date/time is dependent upon the country you are
in. That is just too much overkill for the usual purpose.

In practice, a date/time is loaded from a file or obtained from an operating
system (which MAY take leap seconds into account). At that point it is just a
date/time to be manipulated. If you should be unlucky enough to get a
date/time exactly in a leap second - it really doesn't matter because
date/times are just not synchronized well enough for it to matter.

Where it does matter, there is some local clock which is used and the
date/times are relative to it. This is almost always for timestamps, and the
time since the system boot will generally do well unless you need it across a
network. Then even cable delays become a problem.

So taking leap seconds into account requires a substantial amount of
additional coding, constant updates of possibly distributed code to keep the
list of leap seconds maintained and adversely affects both storage and
performance. For practical matters, even if it could be done at zero cost,
there is no real benefit. Just allowing a day to have 86,401 seconds causes
all sorts of problems with data storage, consistency verification, editing and
ensuring that data entry is correct.

It is the rare application that needs leap seconds - even though it may be
"correct", and certainly an option I have considered many times - but it has
never been justified for anything that I have ever written (which actually
includes operating systems). Consider that the system clock for any processor
will "slip" on a regular basis and need to be reset. The accuracy that most
operating systems can maintain in practice is, at best, only on the order of
a second or two - and that is with regular updates from a timing source.

Now, if you have a processor with a built-in GPSDO, perhaps that could be used
to regulate the system clock (which is just a cheap quartz crystal) and keep
time synchronized to perhaps a millisecond or so. Maybe. But, probably not.

All that is left would be specialized applications that actually require leap
seconds. I don't know of any, but there may be some available. Certainly an
operating system could maintain the necessary lists (assuming that it is
regularly updated). It could use that data for conversions. I don't know of an
operating system that does that though because of the data format problems.
They would report a time such as 24:00:00 which would otherwise be invalid.
That specific time is usually taken as 00:00:00 of the next day. Very few, if
any applications would understand 24:00:00 as a valid time. So, operating
systems can't really afford to take leap seconds into account either.

Lowest price I've found is BasicPCB.com They charge $3 per square
inch for 2 layers with mask and legend. Minimum is three boards of 1
square inch. So you actually can place a $9 order with them. They
are a USA based company.

They accept standard Gerber files. This is very imported as a few
others like PCBexpress make you use their proprietary layout software
and then you are locked into that company for production runs too.
You need a workflow that uses Gerber files

One thing I'm doing is converting a small mill to CNC operation. I'm
doing this to make metal parst but a secondary use is that I hope to
be able to make at least simple PCBs for larger parts.

Re: [time-nuts] Time math libraries

I have had some success with Perl DateTime CPAN module's support for leap
seconds - doing time delta math without using Unix Epoch Seconds properly
handles leap seconds.

Converting back and forth to Unix Epoch time works as well as it can (given
non uniqueness).

It also supports the concept of a "floating timezone" which never takes
into account leap seconds.

[time-nuts] rxx question

2016-12-12 Thread Mark Sims
The /rxx command says to run without a receiver. It turns Heather into a
glorified system clock display. Use /rxk for the Lucent.

Also your time zone command is wrong. Use /tz=EST5EDT or /tz=-5EST/EDT

The life time is shown near the middle of the screen as part of the
disciplining/holdover information.

[time-nuts] rxx question

2016-12-12 Thread Bill Riches
LH works great with my lucent REF0 box. I am using string /4 /vs /tz=5.

When I enter /rxx=17 it corrects leap second but the screen changes from all
of the data to just to clock info full screen. How do I get the full data info
back?

Is it possible to read the total life operating time from the REF0 box?

Thank you again for V5!

[time-nuts] OT: 4-way amplfied GPS splitter wanted - UK source?

2016-12-12 Thread David J Taylor

Perhaps this is not too off-topic for the moderators?

I'm looking for a 4-way (or more) amplified GPS splitter, with N-type
connections. Yes, I can see some on eBay but they all seem to be US sourced
with rather large postage charges. I'm wondering whether anyone in the UK
might have one for sale? It's for my Rapco 1804M which, like a lot of the
older kit, isn't very sensitive so a passive splitter would likely lose too
much signal.

Re: [time-nuts] Lady Heather Version 5 is now available

2016-12-12 Thread David J Taylor

Hello Mark,

many thanks for your immense and invaluable work!

I am using the trimble thunderbold together with LH version 3 all the
last years with success, I like your program very much.
I downloaded and installed today the version 5, but I have some problems
because it looks like my windows 7 does
not get access to the heather.cfg file, what do I wrong? Anybody has an
idea how to do it right?

Many thanks

Arnold,

Like much software where the user needs to edit a configuration file, it's
best installed /outside/ the "Program Files" directory:

- Create a new directory C:\Tools\
- (optional) Set the permissions to Everyone, Full control
- Created a new directory C:\Tools\LadyHeather\ (your choice of name)
- Right-click the LH download, Properties.
 - If "Unblock" is present & checked, uncheck it.
- Install LH here.

It's running correctly on my Win10/64 system. More information:
