Morning, folks. After much consideration I've decided that I really do need that accurate 1PPS and 10MHz source. Seller flyingbest on eBay is offering those Tbolt/PSU/AA packages for a princely $189. Any gotchas or reasons to not get one of these? -- In general terms the Thunderbolt is a great unit and very good value and I'd certainly recommend it, but a couple of observations on this auction in particular. Whilst that package would certainly be convenient they have another auction for the T'bolt only at $130 with free shipping, that saves you $60 and all you need then is a basic antenna similar to that with the kit and a suitable power supply and connector. Basic antennas can be had on Ebay for a few dollars and it's easy enough to build a suitable linear supply for not much money, with the added advantage you don't have switch mode noise to worry about. Manuals and the Trimble software are availabe free online anyway. A further consideration is that whilst the stand alone units are clearly stated to be version 3.0 firmware, and the case photo shows one marked as Revision E with a 2004 date, the T'bolt shown with the kit has version 2.22 firmware and is a Revision B from 2002. At the very least I would ask them to confirm what version they would supply with the kit and if they are also applying that return for any reason option to the kits. Another Chinese seller worth considering is Bob Mokia who sells on Ebay as fluke.l, ( if you're searching that last digit is a small letter ell not a one), and 290329755146 is one of several BIN auctions he's offering for these. Admittedly this is $10 dearer for the stand alone unit, although he does indicate in one auction that he has antennas and PSUs available, but I and others here have dealt with him quite often and his reputation is good. regards Nigel GM8PZR ___ time-nuts mailing list -- time-nuts@febo.com To unsubscribe, go to https://www.febo.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/time-nuts and follow the instructions there.

I've noticed a U.S. seller on Ebay with 100% positive feedback selling a Thunderbolt package deal that isn't too pricey, actually quite a bit less than the one you mention. Apparently they have several and have been listing them over the last few weeks. the latest item (120576511516) ends in a few hours. I just received a Thunderbolt from fluke.L to replace the TAPR Thunderbolt I have that fails. I paid fluke.L on May 19 and it arrived in Michigan, USA on June 3. I'm in my second day of testing with the fluke.L Thunderbolt and it is working fine so far. In January I bought the Thunderbolt PRECISION GPS 10mhz Standard's LED Monitor from fluke.L and it works fine. Re: [time-nuts] Comments on Tbolt deal?
I am not sure what item you are looking at but I lost a TBolt while connected to a switching power supply (I live in an area with frequent intermittent power outages) so I prefer a linear power supply (another TBolt running on a linear power supply for days/weeks on end with no further problems). Also, there is a nice timing antenna available for $30 (e..y item 290369619357) that may be better than the 'patch' antennas. No connection to seller except a satisfied customer. All in all, the TBolt is a good piece of equipment IMHO. Re: [time-nuts] Comments on Tbolt deal?
Hi The TBolt needs a supply that will put out about an amp at +12, just over 1/4 amp at +5 and a few ma at -12. Regulating the +5 down from the +12 isn't to hard with a 7805 and a series resistor. That gets you to +/-12 for the supply. Switchers do indeed work, linear supplies are often a bit less noisy. The antenna hooks up with TV coax and F connectors at the TBolt end. Most antennas have something other than an F connector on them. If you roll your own you likely will need an F to what ever adapter. Timing oriented antennas run around $30 or so. Just about any GPS antenna will work. I have dealt with pretty much all of the Chinese TBolt vendors. They all have delivered the product exactly as described. That includes a gentleman selling the FW V 3.0 version for $65 plus $25 shipping. The only TBolts to avoid are the ones made before 2001. As far as I can see those are no longer floating around China. The FW 3.0 stuff seems to be from late 2004 and 2005. The not FW 3.0 rarely is from before 2003.
