RE:[tips] Whatever happened to pilot studies?

2010-05-13 Thread Pollak, Edward
You're really just restating what I said, Marc, albeit with a somewhat
different slant/emphasis. You say, You don't start sloppy -- you set things up
according to what the literature and your hypotheses tell you, and you exercise
control as you would with any research. That's really all I was trying to
say. i.e., If you get lucky and the parameters are right, you've got yourself a
potentially publishable study but plenty of these studies will become pilot
studies.

If you know what parameter settings you need in order to show the effect, then,
sure, no need to pilot.

But I know in attention and depth perception research (the two areas I'm most
familiar with), it's rare to run a study without having to play with any
parameters. You don't start sloppy -- you set things up according to what the
literature and your hypotheses tell you, and you exercise control as you would
with any research.

I always felt that pilot work wasn't wasted, but taught me about what the
source of the effect was. You go in with an idea that something should do
something, but you have to play with it a while to figure it out. Calling it
pilot research sort of demeans it -- it's really empirical research.

But I sure never thought of it as a waste. That's how I learned what was doing
what.

[tips] Learning/the savings method

2010-05-13 Thread michael sylvester
Do not quote me on this, but there was a time one measurement of learning was
the savings' method.I am not sure if the paradigm was within verbal learning or
classical or operant conditioning. The conclusion went somewhat like this-that
if the amount of trials to reach criteria diminished over time than the subject
has learned by saving on frequency, duration, and latency. This seems to be
connected with the idea that speed of learning is a reliable assessment
device.(Logan)

[tips] Research mentoring compensation

2010-05-13 Thread Annette Taylor
Does your institution offer compensation for mentoring independent
research/study students?

If so, how?

Most of our faculty carry several students a year pro-bono but we are about
used up and want to know what other institutions. I tried to google this but
it's not something that generally appears on websites.

Re: [tips] Research mentoring compensation

2010-05-13 Thread Ken Steele

We have a merit-point system at ASU for various activities. A
faculty member would receive some number of merit points for
mentoring an independent study student, additional merit-points
if the student is a co-author on a conference presentation,
further additional merit points if the student is a co-author on
a publication.

At the end of the year, the chairperson takes whatever additional
salary money we get from the College of Arts Sciences and
spreads it among the faculty proportionally according to merit
points.

The merit point count is a running 3-year average to smooth out
counts for variations in state funding year-to-year and to reward
long-term contributions.

Go here to find our current merit point document:

http://www.psych.appstate.edu/faculty/forms.html

The chairperson has the final say on the classification of merit.

Our mentoring or teaching of students as independent study students is totally
pro bono. In fact, on official records, all independent study students are
listed as taught by the department head.
