Re: [tips] The "Testing Effect"
I know many people who teach introductory psychology courses assess students via recognition--that is,multiple choice tests. However, as per the research study on 'testing effect,' it would seem logical to postulate that short answer essay tests would encourage superior retrieval at a later date. I have been studying the impact of test format on students' study strategies based on test format and the data strongly favors essay tests relative to time reported spending on reading and reviewing the text as well as the processing level they choose to focus on--major ideas versus minor details. I now will integrate into my research how test format impacts students' ability to retrieve the material the following semester. Should be interesting?! [tips] Ever Hear Of A College Lying On It's SATs?
There appears to be a troublesome situation in New Jersey where the governor has decided to merge the State University system with the State College system -- I could be wrong about the terms but Rutgers has been the official state university while there was a separate state college system which contained Montclair State College (now University), and Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State College, home of the long-time EPA executive officer Murray Benimoff). Specifically, the gov wants to merge the Rutgers-Camden school with Rowan University while other parts of the system would also undergo break-up or merger). However, it turns out that some of the information that was being provided by Rowan in support of the merger (the Rutgers faculty and students appear to be against it) has been "incorrect". It appears that the SAT scores for Rowan were "incorrectly" calculated (by a 100 points upward). More information can be obtained from this article on the NewJersey.com website: http://www.northjersey.com/news/education/college/0315_ROWANSAT.html?page=all But this might not be the first time you may have heard of a college doing this. As the article notes: |In January, an administrator at Claremont McKenna College, an already |selective school outside of Los Angeles, was forced to resign after it |was found he inflated SAT scores by 10 to 20 points for each of five years. What an example to set for the students! ;-) -Mike Palij New York University m...@nyu.edu --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: arch...@jab.org. Re:[tips] What Will You Do At 3:14pm Today? Have Some Pi?
As pi day, 14 March, was also Einstein's birthday, it is appropriate to note that while pi is certainly a constant, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is not: "In a curved space, we could imagine defining the 'diameter' of a circle as the maximum geodesic distance connecting two of its points, and taking the ratio of the circumference with that diameter, and indeed it would typically not give us 3.14159… But that doesn’t mean π is changing from place to place; it just means that the ratio of circumference to diameter (defined this way) in a curved space doesn’t equal π." http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/cosmicvariance/2010/11/11/the-pi-on/ Allen Esterson Former lecturer, Science Department Southwark College, London allenester...@compuserve.com http://www.esterson.org --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: arch...@jab.org.
