Throughout the 20th century, *Jews* have been greatly over-represented in
western nations among intellectual elites, in the universities, and among
the higher socio-economic classes. The two principal theories that have

This paper elaborates the hypothesis that the unique demography and
sociology of Ashkenazim in medieval Europe selected for
*intelligence*.Ashkenazi literacy, economic specialization, and
closure to inward gene
flow led to a social environment in which there was high fitness payoff to *
intelligence*, specifically verbal and mathematical *intelligence* but not
spatial ability. As with any regime of strong directional selection on a
quantitative trait, genetic variants that were otherwise fitness reducing
rose in frequency. In particular we propose that the well-known clusters of
Ashkenazi genetic diseases, the sphingolipid cluster and the DNA repair
cluster in particular, increase *intelligence* in heterozygotes. Other
Ashkenazi disorders are known to increase *intelligence*. Although these
disorders have been attributed to a bottleneck in Ashkenazi history and
consequent genetic drift, there is no evidence of any bottleneck. Gene
frequencies at a large number of autosomal loci show that if there was a
bottleneck then subsequent gene flow from Europeans must have been very
large, obliterating the effects of any bottleneck. The clustering of the
disorders in only a few pathways and the presence at elevated frequency of

This paper provides new data on the theory that *Jews* have a higher
average level of verbal *intelligence* than non-Jewish whites. The theory
is considered by examining the vocabulary scores of *Jews*, non-Jewish
whites, blacks and others obtained in the American General Social Surveys
carried out by the National Opinion Research Centre in the years
1990-1996.Vocabulary size is a good measure of verbal
*intelligence*. *Jews* obtained a significantly higher mean vocabulary
score than non-Jewish whites, equivalent to an IQ advantage of 7.5 IQ
points. The results confirm previous reports that the verbal IQ of American

I believe that you get similar data regarding Asians.
And of course there is the question of whether IQ tests measure anything beyond 
verbal facility.

And of course the food is our plot to kill off all the goy through 
atherosclerosis.
We of course have an inherited immunity.

 Rob Weisskirch cited studies which reported intellectual success of 
Jews relative to other definable groups, such in a report by Lynn and 
Kanazawa (2008) whose title says it all, How to explain high Jewish 
achievement: the role of intelligence and values.

I don't want to dampen discussion of this valid topic. But as a  
spokesperson for my race (and everyone except Louis will recognize 
the facetious nature of that claim), I think it's worth noting that 
Jews are often uncomfortable when this issue is raised, and try not 
to raise it themselves.  Centuries of persecution have made us 
cautious in advancing any claim which could lead to anti-semitism (it 
doesn't take much). 

Which leads me to my main reason for this post: to tell a joke.

 Murray and Leah decide to be adventurous for their 50th wedding 
anniversary, and travel to a  beautiful South American country which 
happens to be ruled by a right-wing dictatorship. Unfortunately for 
the hapless tourists, they are spotted accidentally taking a 
photograph of a military establishment, and are immediately arrested 
for spying. 

After a month held under brutal conditions and unable to contact 
anyone at home, they are sentenced at a secret trial to be executed 
by firing squad. On the appointed day, they are blindfolded and led 
out to be shot. 

Murray has a final request. Please, he begs, Let me call our 
children at home to say good-bye. The commandant leans over and 
shouts, No!. 

Murray spits in his eye. Murray, Leah warns, Don't cause 
trouble!.

And so it is with the question of Jewish smarts.

I'm not a mathematician! (I shall refrain from commenting here on the 
fallibility of memory. :-) ) I have a physics degree from University 
College London, circa late 1950s (egad!). But I would not call myself a 
physicist, as I follow George Bernard Shaw's dictum: He who can, does. 
He who cannot, teaches. (No offence folks – at College level some both 
do and teach.)

For the benefit especially of Stephen Black. I checked online, and it 
is authentic GBS, from an Appendix to Man and Superman.

Ok. Seriously, I HAVE to meet some of you folks before I die! The 
wikiality link is too funny.

I don't know when I'll be in New Yawk city but it's on my bucket list. 
I met Allen for coffee (not tea) in London--delightful! Didn't realize 
until then that he is a mathematician by training, and not a 
psychologist. I have also met Michael S in Daytona, during one of the 
AP readings, although I stayed in the background--he was spinning music 
outdoors. There are a few Canadians on this list I'd like to meet as 
well. And Beth! Have to meet Beth some time--aren't you in San Diego 
periodically, why haven't we met yet? Ah, it's so great to have a to-do 
list. And I will be in South Africa in February--but unfortunately only 
around Capetown!

ps: I took a grad course in dev psych from a devout follower of Jensen. 
Sigh. None of the women in class got A's; but the men did. :(   My 
advisor advised me to not pursue it in academic grievance channels as 
the grades in grad school are not that relevant, and I did get a B; 
and it was better to just leave it alone; and he'd find a way to show 
that my grade was as it should be as everything was graded subjectively 
via papers and essay exams; and it was better just to focus on my 
dissertation. I don't know if I wish I had done anything--or not--as a 
year later the guy dropped dead. Literally. I'm glad he was out of the 
educational system.

Good thinking, Annette! I almost certainly would have told you that at 
the end of my teaching career I had given up teaching physics, and only 
taught mathematics.

Yes, I believe it was approximately 26 years ago at APA in Anaheim, just 
outside of Disneyland.

I believe I remember a discussion of teacups and Alice in Wonderland
