Janice I just love to see the posts from here. I am on FB like so many of
us. I enjoyed it at first, but there is so much needless posting and takes
so long to go everything until you get something about TM that helps. I am
a pet lover, but get tired of looking at all the cute animal posts that
have nothing to do with TM. I don't believe I will leave FB, but would
like to see more posts here from people. I miss the people who didn't go
to FB.

I have taken the flu shot for the past 15+ yearsnever got the
flu.and I do not believe getting TM had anything to do with any kind
of immunizations. I also see my regular MD twice a year minimum and he
does prescribe most of my meds. However I see my neurologist at least once
per year to insure that I am up to date with the best pain killers and

to see if a baclofen pump will be beneficial and he also prescribed 2 oz
per month of marijuana which I know is beneficial

There is a ton of information and personal stories, pictures etc at the T.M.I.C.
Internet Club. The reason I like this site is that we talk about TM and the
medicines and conditiions we have. I am not looking to make friends (although
that is a plus). I just want to share information that may help us cope with
this awful condition. As for me I have always believed that the cause of my TM
was excess stress which probably caused my immune system to overreact to some
minor illness like a summer cold.that being said no doctor can say what
caused any of us to have TMI myself decided it was stresseveryone one
of us thinks he knows the cause of TM ...but none of us do!

All the best and happy to see this site in action once again!

Your question was on stress and TM and how it affects one.

I have found that any, repeat, any amount of stress sends me up and over
the edge, around the bend, bonkers, psycho, or whatever you wish to call it.

In November I deliberately stopped all meds cold turkey (yes, I know, bad
idea) - after about a week I knew I would live. I have the same pain level
now as I did when I was taking effexor, welbutrin, quetiapine, lyrica,
oxycontin, and flexeril.

At this point I am only taking oxy at night to cope with the pain so I can
sleep - except tonight it isn't working so I added some Lyrica. Yesterday
and today were stressful days for me, plus my roommate is giving me grey
hair. lol. So for me - a little stress is as detrimental as a lot.

May you and yours find your way through this dark night of the soul, and I

Cindy, Wow...you really had it bad. I had the same problems when I was in
the nursing home after my gall bladder surgery, except I had huge pressure
sores the size of a tennis ball on my behind. Isolation for MRSA is the
pits. I hated it that people had to mask and gown in order to come in. The
aids refused to help me with my bowel program. And now, thinking about
having the pain pump put in leaves me with frightening thoughts about going
back to the home for recuperation. Thank you for the prayers for Dave,
keep praying please. I love you,

Jude, you are talking about stress. I spent part of 2010 and all of 2011
going from the hospital to the skilled nursing facilities (SNF) because of
a server broken leg. I had more than 6/7 surgeries, was bedridden where I
was not able to raise up higher than 20%. That made eating almost
impossible and I lost over 30 pounds. I was told by my PC that I almost died
3
times. I have to leave my dog and cat. Luckily I had a friend that took my
dog and gave her great care. I had billing problems with the SNF and they
tried to refuse me the second time I needed to go there. I had to have one
surgery without anything to put me under. I got to listen to everything
in the operating room. Lucky for me I have no sensation. I had no one at
home to take care of bills, etc. I had to figure out how to do that in the
hospital or SNF. I am not including the really awful stuff. I am a single
woman and had no partner to help me through all this. But I had many
friends and family that put on the yellow gowns (I had MRSA and was in
isolation) to come in my room and cheer me up. My stress level was very high.
 My
blood pressure was very low - 92 over 47 on good days. Thank God the most
of that is behind me. I had great doctors, great family and great friends
to get me though this. We all deal with what comes our way, in our own
way.

I will pray for Dave.

symptoms/residuals (whatever you want to call them) worse. Just when I think
things are getting better, a bunch of stresses hit and then everything seems
to
go to hell-in-a-handbasket. So we all know that stress is a bad thing.

Some suggestions that I try to use for pain relief also seem to help with
stress. These include:

!--[if !supportLists]-- · !--[endif]--Visual imagery and
distraction: Imagery involves concentrating on mental pictures of pleasant
scenes or events or mentally repeating positive words or phrases to reduce
pain.
Distraction techniques focus your attention away from negative or painful
images to positive mental thoughts. This may include activities as simple
as watching television or a favorite movie, reading a book or listening to
a book on tape, listening to music, or talking to a friend.

* Age progression/regression: Use your mind’s eye to project
yourself forward or backward in time to when you are pain-free (or
stress-free)
or experiencing much less pain (or stress). Then instruct yourself to act
as if this image were true.

I know that at first I thought this was a bit lame, the old mind over
matter silliness, but it can help some. As others have said, I also place a
lot of importance on faith and prayer. I beieve very strongly that God loves
us, and talking to Him helps a lot.

[TMIC] reviving the list

2013-01-23 Thread Shirley Gurnell
Good afternoon Jude, Janice, Cheryl, Dalton and many more members that are
coming back to the site. I think a big thank you is in order to Jude and
Janice for their contribution to the club of TMer's that prefer this way of
communicating, well done. I'm a silent observer, I am one of the Global
Moderators of the TMA site, so my time goes into the Board Index sites, plus
helping newbies out both there and FB. The 3 TM groups on FB are well
patronized and are closed to the public, which is a lot more private for us,
as some of our problems can be rather personal.

I look forward to catching up with some of you again, either here or FB.

Hi Jill,

It's been years! Good to hear from you. Now I have one more member to
add to my list. I am updating my address book on AOL and need your last
name, phone number and address, if you don't mind. I promise I won't share
your info with anyone. I only want it in case I want to send you a card or
call you sometime.

I am having fun with TMIC, but it's a lot of work and tough to handle all
by myself. If you can think of topics to discuss I will surely appreciate
it if you will let me know.

You describe autonomic disreflexia exactly. Whenever it happens to me, I
have to take an Oxycodone or Valium right away. Otherwise, I do take the
pain medicine, but never Valium. In fact, right now I don't have any in the
house. But, your talking about it makes me scared again. It's a very
frightening experience.

Maybe that will be our next topic. By the way, I have been sending all
of my mail with a copy to the TMIC list. Is that what I'm supposed to do?
Plus, I'm saving all of the mail on my computer, but have no way of
backing it up. If my computer should die, I will lose everything.

Anyway, it is good to talk to you again. I've missed you.

Hi Candy,

It's good to hear from you again. It's been years. I guess there must be
room for 3 groups. I don't know. Maybe it's the fact that on Facebook
one can see what the other person looks like. That aspect was fun for me at
first...seeing everyone for the first time. Incredible, almost like
meeting a long lost friend.

But, then, lately, I have kind of been appalled by the fact that instead
of truly voicing their opinions about a given subject all people do is make
one line comments about nothing. I can't explain it. People are
wonderful and very supportive and I love them all so, but TMIC just seems
better to
 me.

It's getting late, I'll talk to you soon. Send me your full name, address
and phone number for my address book. I may want to send you a card or
call you some time. I will never give out your info to anyone.

Love and Hugs,
Jude,

Hi Shirley,

Thank you for the well wishes...however, I am confused. On one hand you
say we are doing a good job, but then you say (the way I read it) that
Facebook is better because the groups are closed.

Please help me out.

Good afternoon Jude, Janice, Cheryl, Dalton and many more members that are
coming back to the site. I think a big thank you is in order to Jude and
Janice for their contribution to the club of TMer’s that prefer this way of
communicating, well done. I’m a silent observer, I am one of the Global
Moderators of the TMA site, so my time goes into the Board Index sites, plus
helping newbies out both there and FB. The 3 TM groups on FB are well
patronized and are closed to the public, which is a lot more private for us,
as
some of our problems can be rather personal.
I look forward to catching up with some of you again, either here or FB.
Take Care everybody.

[TMIC] Reviving the List

2013-01-23 Thread Shirley Gurnell
Hi Jude,
There is one page on FB called Living with Transverse Myelitis, this is for TM
sufferers. The second is, Transverse Myelitis Folks which is for caregivers and
TM sufferers, the third is TM-HA, for ladies only. Delicate questions can be
asked and answered amongst us, who have been there and done that. A lot of
people probably don't know how to find this site, I had to google it, and I'm a
regular on the TMA site. I have seen you on one of the FB sites, Jude, don't
ask me which one tho.
Cheers
Shirley (NZ)
