2009-06-17 Thread Cammy
Before I unsubscribe I wanted to let each and every one of how much you have
helped me.
My son's fiancée was paralyzed with TM/spinal stroke almost 2 years ago. As you
know it has been quite a long road.
There is drug addiction involved as well, so a sad story with a 2 year old baby
as well.
One of the things I have learned around here, and I have learned a lot, is
that there is always possibility, and there is ALWAYS a way through this.

I have pretty much stayed in the background, but if I had any info to share
with ya'll I peeked my head up to try to give back.
Every one of you are unsung heroes, and in my small way, whenever I hear people
I know who are big charitable people, I steer them in this direction.

GOD bless each and everyone of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
TIAD!!! Cammy

Ok - what's the scoop on these drugs. Have any of you all taken them?

Did they help?

Where there any significant side effects?

I was sent to a bone doc. to have a look.

He wants me to try baclofen for spasms, (i didn't know that I was having them -
everyone else says that I'm not have spasms - I'm so confussed on the term
spasms. - first neuro talked about my legs being spastic because they wouldn't
move - he pick them up and the right leg would stick in mid area lol - he'd
have to push it back down. When I mentioned spasm later, everyone would look
at me oddly and say that I wasn't having spasms. Now this guy is giving me meds
for spasms and says that my right leg shows signs of spasticity)

He said my vert was great - mild degeneration in mid T and at L-5 S-1 - which I
already knew about. The 'arthritis' is genetic/ getting older he said - but
it is unusual for my age. He said my 2001 car accident didn't have anything to
do with it - but my chiro told me in 01 that it would come in time because it
almost always shows up in a few years after a major collision. Anyway - what's
the scoop on all these meds. before I decide to go ahead and take them I just
wanted find out if it is worth the time.

There is also something called acidophilus. I'm not sure if that is spelled
right or not. You can get it at the pharmacy. It has to be kept refrigerated
and can be taken in large doses. This replaces the good bacteria that has been
lost.

If it is the gut thing, my father had it bad when he was being treated for
cancer. He finally did get rid of it by eating a lot of yogurt. He almost
lived on yogurt.

Hi Rick,

Is it possible that you mean C-Diff? A gut issue where the bad bacteria is
dominant over the good?? That's the analogy that I use anyway. I had it 2
years ago, and per my MD, may never quite get rid of it so need to make sure I
continue to use probiotics. It takes a good while before you have any relief
at all from it, and it is generally caused by too many antibiotics which kill
off the good, bad and the ugly.

Keep praying all!

RE: [TMIC] scissoring legs

2007-11-12 Thread Cammy
Hi everyone, this is Cammy.
I have been reading all your correspondences and have learned so much.
I just want to remind all of you that as Natalie has said here, some of the
doctors don't know a lot. The reason I got into the TM group was because the
doctors in Portland, OR, did not test my future daughter-in-law for a spinal
stroke, fortunately they knew about TM, but missed the stroke. They don't know
everything so please don't get discouraged, and stay in touch with this group,
cause you are not crazy, in fact in my book you are all very courageous,
amazing and smart people.

Oh my I can barely hop, if at all. Not sure if it is hop or a stumble. And,
skipping is totally gone. It is as if my body does not comprehend what my mind
is telling it to do. It is strange. I wonder why all neuros do not ask us to
try it. And, I wonder why this does not show up on the nerve conduction tests.
I know one neuro thought my emg test was awful, but then he finally decided I
must be causing the poor results. Only one neuro thought I might have a slight
nerve delay or whatever it is called. This little hop/skip thing at least makes
me feel there is reason I have such difficulty. Thanks for sending in this info.

Hi All,

I don't write in very often but I noticed your message about trying to hop.
The physiotherapist I am seeing had me try to hop and to skip. I couldn't do
either. Have you tried skipping yet? It definitely is a strange feeling to
get all psyched up to hop off the floor and the feet just stay planted there!

I asked why and she said that both hopping and skipping require very quick
messages between the nerves, brain and muscles and, when we have a spinal cord
injury, the responses aren't fast enough. They aren't her exact words, and it
was a few months ago, but that is the gist of it. I asked if practising would
help but, if I remember correctly, she didn't seem to think it would. I think
she was using it more as a diagnostic tool than an exercise for me to do.

Regards.

My goodness, most of us are adults who have a spinal cord disorder and have
pretty much given up on our privacy when it comes to questions asked and
answers given regarding our specific needs.

It is most likely that at one time or another we have had to grow up and speak
like an adult about topics we might not have spoken openly about before we
became humbled by, in our case, Transverse Myelitis, a disease we need to
become more vocal about, if anything.

The TMIC List is edited by adept persons donating their time to whatever task
it is that they are overseeing. There are strict rules and regulations
regarding speach when alluding to private physical issues. We have come to
grow up and use real words, such as urinating over going potty, for example.

Maybe there ought to be an Adult Content header somewhere in our initial
dialouge, but one will not be able to find anything pornographic or anything
even near so in the context of the words used regarding Transverse Myelitis in
all of its questions and answers.

If you have a difficulty with words such as penis or vagina then, yes, you may
have a problem and ought to take your unfortunate spinal cord injury somewhere
else, but remember, as you go, here...you will find the truth backed up by the
latest news coverage, lively discussion and so many hugs, so much love, and all
of the Prayers you want, that I doubt you will find anywhere else.

Now...what is your question? And, oh, by the way, I know more than just a few
people who go by aliases and even at least one of us who writes very
intelligently to the list under at least three names and addresses.

Jude from MI

Somehow, these social workers and Durable Medical Equipment people don't
understand that people also want to have a Quality of Life. In order to do
that, we need to be mobile. This is why equipment with wheels are made. Sure,
there are those who need scooters in their home for sure, but they aren't the
only ones who benefit from them.

I had the same problem when I wanted a wheelchair. She told me since I can get
around my house without it that I didn't need it. But I asked her if I was
supposed to be house bound for the rest of my life or if I were supposed to try
and have some quality to my life and go to a shopping mall, amusement park or
county fair, etc. Sure, we all have our limitations, but don't let anyone
discount what you can do and try not to let them stop you from doing it if you
can help it.

OK, I've vented also. I'll get off my soapbox now!

Hugs to all, Barbara A

It take quite a while for the effects to go away for me. At least 9 weeks
usually before I started to feel like myself again. I know the first week
afterwards is always really bad. Usually end up back in the ER because I am so
sick. How long has it been since you stopped taking them?
