Just a documentation recommendation. Since Tomcat does not compile a jsp until
it finds a proper BUILD.XML file (I assume). It would be helpful to document
the location of the BUILD.XML file as well as the contents. Maybe a simple
HELLOWORLD example.
I have searched various forums on Tomcat and to my knowledge no one has ever
used TOMCAT 5 with JSP pages. They do not compile.
The Tomcat documentation says they are automatically compiled but this is not
true.

JBoss does not embed Tomcat. They bolt it onto the side of their

is not the same thing. If they say it is, they are either misleading you or
they are honestly wrong. I know enough about Marketecture to safely say

As far as "competitive advantages" go, once people get a taste of Geronimo's
configuration and distribution features, once they understand what IoC-3
Components and GBeans buy them, they're never going to want to develop for
anything else. Order-of-magnitude performance gains not included, I
think the
JBoss server is in serious trouble and I would hate to be holding ten
million
dollars of debt on my shoulders riding in *that* boat. The configuration
advantages alone will challenge the way we think about application
development.

Yeah, they set the bar really high around here. I got a couple of
nosebleeds

problems
when they sit down to implement JSR-77.

I feel inflamatory articles, FUD, and nonsense is a very unproductive

Remy,

It seems these ASF new-comers (geronimo) need too learn a little
about modesty.
For now JBoss is the leader and Geronimo is still in the limb
since there is NO official release.
Users will decide themself if Geronimo is greater than JBoss
when Geronimo will be available.
If they continue in such direction (flams/injures),
we'll have to send strong notice to Board since this kind
of discussions as nothing to do in ASF and between ASF peoples.

jsp:invoke throws an NPE when the fragment is null. The spec clearly states
that null fragments should result in empty output.

JSP.5.12
... If the fragment identified by the given name is null,
 will behave as though a fragment was passed in that produces no

Sources shoud be put and signed in the:

/x1/www/www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/tomcat-connectors/jk2/source

You may change the README.html too.

Also in the root of jk2 there are some current sources that IMO should be
removed (they are not mirroded thought).

I'm working on updating the FreeBSD port of www/mod_jk2.
Previously it was building mod_jk for apache2 which is quite
misleading (being called mod_jk2 and all). The www/mod_jk
port builds mod_jk for either apache13 or apache2 anyway.
I should be done with it shortly.

Thanks for fixing the name of the tarball. Could I ask you to
make another change? The tarball extracts into a directory
name that doesn't match the tarball name ( missing the jk2
again ). Could you recreate the tarball with the directory name
jakarta-tomcat-connectors-jk2-2.0.4-src? The *BSD porting
schemes assume the source tarball extracts into a dir name that
matches the tarball name (can be overridden if necessary).

For OpenBSD 3.4 it shipped with tomcat 4.0.6, so I'll skip the
binary for that and make one for 3.5 when its available.

Thanks,
-Kurt

An applications WAR file is not redeployed automatically when the
war file is updated.

The problem is that HostConfig.checkContextLastModified() is seeing the
wrong value for what it thinks is the name of the WAR file. Instead of
seeing "myubc.war" it sees "ROOT" so the

  if (files[i].endsWith(".war")) {

test at line 843 always fails since files[0]="ROOT"

Here is the server.xml entries for the Context:

This is normal. Only webapps deployed in the host appBase will be redeployed.
Basically, this is not the way deployment occurs (and BTW, you shouldn't put

Threads not freed up from https req.s from OS X Internet Explorer 5.2

   Summary: Threads not freed up from https req.s from OS X Internet
Explorer 5.2
   Product: Tomcat 4
   Version: 4.1.18
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows NT/2K
Status: NEW
  Severity: Normal
  Priority: Other
 Component: Connector:Coyote HTTP/1.1
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Environment details: Tomcat 4.1.18 with J2SDK 1.4.1_02 Running on Win2K with -
Xms256M -Xmx512M

System.activeThread() count seems to increased by 4 any time a new Mac OS X
(10.2) client (using SSL connections from IE 5.2) browses to the site. Threads
are never returned, even after the Mac is powered down. Threads do not
increase as a result of Windows clients using IE 5.x or 6.x, even with SSL.

We have verified that the problem is not in our application by monitoring the
thread counts while clients were browsing to Tomcat's ROOT context (non-SSL).

We do not observe this behavior when browsing from these machines using the
Safari browser -- So it's probably IE 5.2 causing the problem, BUT...
Shouldn't these threads somehow time out?

Thanks for any help and/or advice you can offer.

Re: TC5 startup.bat shutdown.bat catalina.bat - FYI

2004-03-25 Thread NormW
Good morning All.
Below are two methods recently noted in NetWare forums to get recent
Tomcat-5 to properly compile JSP's.
I have tried method 1. and was able to successfully get a jsp to work that
had previously failed with a java IOerror.
I haven't tried the second approach but its author seemed satisfied.
For information and consideration.
Norm

-
Method 1.

Try editing conf/web.xml, search for "jsp".

put in:

scratchdir
/tomcat/5019/work

(your tomcat path may not be the same as mine)

This *is* a workaround, but it appears to work with the few jsp test
pages I have tried...

cheers
/Stig

-
Method 2.

OK, forget this... I've recompiled Tomcat5 with a rewrite of the faulty
renameTo() function on line 230 of SmapUtil.java, something like this:

 static void install(File classFile, byte[] smap) throws IOException
{
 File tmpFile = new File(classFile.getPath() + "tmp");
 new SDEInstaller(classFile, smap, tmpFile);

 if (!classFile.delete()) {
 throw new IOException("classFile.delete() failed");
 }

 FileInputStream fis  = new FileInputStream(tmpFile);
 FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(classFile);
 byte[] buf = new byte[1024];
 int i = 0;
 while((i=fis.read(buf))!=-1) {
 fos.write(buf, 0, i);
 }
 fis.close();
 fos.close();

 if (!tmpFile.delete()) {
 throw new IOException("classFile.delete() failed");
 }
 }

Works like a charm :-)

cheers
/Stig

I just read this bug report on jndi realm not working for tomcat 5. Is all of
it not working or just working in certain cases? I am using Tomcat 5 and an
LDAP server and following all the instructions on the jakarta.apache.org/tomcat
site for JNDIrealms, and it's not verifying the usernames and passwords
correctly. I saw some tidbit that the jndi 1.2 can work with either openldap 3
or 4. Is really true. I am using ldap version 2. COuld that be the problem?
Please clarify.

AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Background:

* JBoss 3.2.4RC1 w/Tomcat 5.0.19.
* Two webapps: /com.loudcloud.owm.usrmgr, /com.loudcloud.owm.shared
* Inside page /com.loudcloud.owm.usrmgr/domain.jsp, it includes the content of
another JSP from another webapp /com.loudcloud.owm.shared/header.jsp. It does
so by getting a request dispatcher

ServletContext ctx2 =
pageContext.getServletContext().getContext("/com.loudcloud.owm.shared");
RequestDispatcher dispatcher = ctx.getRequestDispatcher("/header.jsp");
dispatcher.include(request, response)

This results in the following NullPointerException in Catalina (see stack trace
below). Also worth mentioning is that both webapps /com.loudcloud.owm.shared
and /com.loudcloud.owm.usrmgr have a Filter set up in the web.xml. Only the
filter in the /com.loudcloud.owm.usrmgr/domain.jsp request was invoked. The
filter /com.loudcloud.owm.shared/header.jsp was not invoked. Is that the
correct behavior with Servlet 2.4?

Packages for FreeBSD 4.9 and the port that I used to create
them are available at:

http://jakarta.apache.org/~truk/

Mladen you may want to use the port I created for FreeBSD 5
for consistency. One item to note, you will need to set
WITH_APACHE2=YES in your environment to get the package
depends to work right for apache2.

I followed Guenter's proposed structure with adjustment for the OS
directory conventions and some file additions. We must include
LICENSE and NOTICE files. I added the docs in jk/docs/ too.
