For newbies only...
Whenever you see " homepage.HTML.vbs" an extension past the "HTML" part of a URL
 It usually
means that you are not opening a Webpage
You are actually opening and attachment .. in this case a vicious Visual Basic Script.
When you see anything that ends in anything other than ".html" or "htm" ... Don't even
open it...
Just wait ... and you will see others suffer!

Auto reload

The auto-reload mechanism, does it only work for changed servlets, or is it possible to
get Tomcat to auto-reload changed (or new) classes and libs under the WEB-INF dir also?
In other words: can I change my web-application without affecting (by doing stop/start
Tomcat) other web-applications on the same Tomcat-server?

IIS not sending POST parameters to Tomcat

2001-05-09 Thread Stephen Oakes

Does anybody have any more information on this problem? In standalone mode,
Tomcat behaves correctly, but when called via IIS, form request parameters
are not passed through if I use a "post". It works if I change the form
method to "get".

Changing uriworkermap.properties doesn't seem to make any difference.

Is there any way I can reliably use form post parameters using IIS and
Tomcat?

I believe if you are not using the default directory setup
(/webapps/ROOT, etc.) then you must define the context in the
server.xml file (located in the conf directory) Like so:

. . ..:: Upgrading Tomcat ::.. . .

2001-05-09 Thread Mike Spisak

I want to remedy the "view source code" bug in Tomcat 3.x...

I have searched around and cannot find anything on how to upgrade my tomcat
instance from 3.2.1 to 4 ..

Is it as simple as unzipping the new tomcat code over my 3.2.1 install?? I
dont want to do anything that will mess up my original configuration..

If upgrading is a bad idea, are there any other suggestions other than
upgrading to fix the %70 "view jsp source" bug?

Thanks in advance..

Current Configuration:

OS: Win2k
WebEngine: IIS5
Tomcat v3.2.1
DB: mySQL

FYI: the above config is working very nicely (except for the tomcat bug..)

Thanks!

Tomcat/IIS 5.0 & ISAPI REDIRECTOR

2001-05-09 Thread test test

Hello

I have a problem with getting my own jsp's located under c:/inetpub/wwwroot/
to work.

I have managed to get IIS 5.0 to serve the JSP examples.

I have added a context to :

uriwokermap.properties

for my own files which are sitting under the Jakarta
directory and this works fine.

How can I get JSP files located under c:/inetpub/wwwroot/ to work ?

I suspect I may have to add another context , but adding:

c:/inetpub/wwwroot/

to the uriworkermap.properties file does not work.

Can anyone help ?

Removing an old configuration?

2001-05-09 Thread Stephen Oakes

I have just gone through the process of connecting Tomcat to IIS. It seems
to work, in that I can bring up http://localhost/examples/jsp/index.html.
However, I previously had JRun installed and whenever I try to access a JSP
file, IIS tries to send it off to JRun, which is no longer running. How do
I remove IIS's references to JRun so that JSP references go to Tomcat?

RE: It will be possible?(JDBC with tomcat 3.2.1)

2001-05-09 Thread Jann VanOver

Good
news!  You don't need to do realms!

JDBC
Realms are specifically for using a database to authenticate users and their
roles.

You
can use JDBC directly and completely ignore Realms if you
want.

However, it is recommended that you NOT put the JDBC code directly into
your JSP.  Use beans (see JSP tutorial at http://www.apl.jhu.edu/~hall/java/Servlet-Tutorial/Servlet-Tutorial-JSP.html)
or JSP tag libraries (like Jakarta's http://jakarta.apache.org/taglibs/doc/jdbc-doc/index.html)

RE: Odd Page Caching Behavior

2001-05-09 Thread Jared Clinton

Dear Tomcat ppl,

This caching problem, may well be an IE problem.

Internet Explorer employs what is called 'agressive caching strategy' , it
hardly ever tries to get the entire page again, no matter what caching
strategy you use. (Use a packet sniffer and all the different caching
options, behaviour is nearly exactly the same)

If you include these in your page, it may help:

Also , appending timestamp strings to your application URLs may help..

Then again, this may not be the problem. Let me know how you go.

Hope this helps,

Only
if all the servlets shared the same output stream to the browser (you could use

Is it possible to set the GLOBAL default error page for TomCat 4?

2001-05-09 Thread John Upham

I understand the use of the error-page directive in an application
web.xml, but we are interested in changing the default error-page
returned globally by Tomcat 4.
We would like to return a "user-friendly" error response with a
customized error page that does not include the stack trace info
(but from which we can do informational logging).

Is it possible to declare a default error-page value in the Tomcat
server.xml (or other config file)? Barring that, is it possible to
create a custom error handler class to override the Tomcat error
handler?

Thanks for any help,
jbu

ITN News Direct 97.3 in London just reported
about this virus. Apparently as well as the
usual Outlook virus action of sending copies
of itself to everyone in your virus buffer
(I mean "address book", sorry) it opens up
a browser to one of four porn site urls.
Nice. You Windows users best not double
click that sucker in the office. If you are
irresponsible to click on a vbasic script
you get through email to begin with.

No kidding. All the email sentries are email each
other with attachment alerts. It would be cool if
they instead could talk to each other like "I just
found a virus, did you find a virus? What's its file
name?" and etc. Like a dns database, just update

Is it possible to set the GLOBAL default error page for TomCat 4?

2001-05-09 Thread John Upham

I understand the use of the error-page directive in an application web.xml, but we are
interested in changing the default error-page returned globally by Tomcat 4.
We would like to return a "user-friendly" error response with a customized error page
that does not include the stack trace info (but from which we can do informational
logging).

Is it possible to declare a default error-page value in the Tomcat server.xml (or
other config file)? Barring that, is it possible to create a custom error handler
class to override the Tomcat error handler?

Thanks for any help,
jbu

RE: problem with response.sendRedirect()

2001-05-09 Thread Brandon Cruz

I am using linux, tomcat v3.2.1 Apache v1.3.14 and my code is very simple...

if (request.getParameter("Submit").equals("logout")){
  sessionBean.setLogin(false);
  sessionBean.closeConnection();
response.sendRedirect("thanks.jsp"); //to say thank you after logout
}

I was redirecting to thanks.html but switched to .jsp thinking it may help.
It does help, none of the code prints to the screen (so far), but now it
ignores the stylesheet for the page (thanks.jsp). For some reason, this
does not happen if I use tomcat standalone. I am getting this message in
the tomcat.log file...

2001-05-09 05:08:05 - Ctx( www.mysite.com ): Handler
tomcat.redirectHandler(null/null) tomcat.redirectHandler

I do a redirect to a page when I log in which works fine like this...

if (sessionBean.getLogin() == true)
response.sendRedirect("/"); // to go to the home page

2001-05-09 Thread Brandon Cruz

I have a jsp that does a simple response.sendRedirect to another page on the
site when a user logs out. For develoopment, we use tomcat standalone and
there is no problem executing that method. On production, we have apache as
the webserver and it seems to choke when executing that method. There are
other parts on the site that do a redirect with no problem, it is only this
one (which happens to be when a user logs out and a connection to the
database is closed). Sometimes it shows all the source code from the jsp to
the browser and some apache headers as well. Anyone ever seen anything like
this?

Hi :-) I find a mistake in my last email:-)

with TC4.0b1(standalone, JDK1.3, winnt40):
- session is "of" a special webapp, with the same browser:
% diferent webapp "has" different session
% diferent MyServlet in the same webapp "has" same session

- when I updated MyServlet in webapp0, then MyServlet will be
reloaded, then the session of webapp0 will be a new
  one(before it is expired)

is the above right? why does the container destroy session
of a webapp when this webapp's classloader is updated?

have a nice day! :-)

There are some efforts right now on that direction, if you are
interested on support that and can contribute to that effort you are
welcomed to Tomcat-Dev list to comment in and contribute if you can
...follow guidelines on for
sending patches..

Apart from the above, it seems that will be possible to use TC 4.0 with
IIS in the near future..think of a time frame of 3 to 6 months..sorry
for not being more accurate ..but is a ongoing effort that is just
starting so it's really difficult to bet something for real. :)

RE: Using Digest method of JDBCRealm

2001-05-09 Thread Ignacio J. Ortega

It seems your JDK is not honouring the default LocalString.properties
and it needs that you have a LocalString_en.properties instead..i have
seen this behaviour sometimes in JDK 1.2.2 on windows...

a Easy workaround can be, to extract the localString.properties from
catalina.jar and re-add it to the jar as LocalString_en.properties..

use the jar command for that task..

Apache, encodeURL and mod_rewrite

2001-05-09 Thread Steve Taylor

I have been trying to configure Apache 1.3.19 to work with Tomcat 3.2.1
under HP-UX11 using the mod_jk web server adapter. All the forms within our
jsp pages are submitted with a call to response.encodeURL(). This seems to
be a problem for Apache since it appends a semicolon and the jsessionid to
the url. Apache doesn't seem to know how to pass this on to Tomcat
correctly, if at all. I am using the following rewrite rule:

LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/mod_rewrite.so
AddModule mod_rewrite.c

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(/.*;jsessionid=.*)$ $1 [T=jserv-servlet]

This seems to help for a while but eventually Apache throws this garbage to
the screen:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 20:46:42 GMT Server: Apache/1.3.19
(Unix) mod_jk Servlet-Engine: Tomcat Web Server/3.2.1 (JSP 1.1; Servlet 2.2;
Java JavaVM-1.3.0.01; HP-UX B.11.00 PA_RISC; java.vendor=Hewlett-Packard
Co.) Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=31 Connection: Keep-Alive
Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html;charset=8859_1 d2 2000 cc

92e
I have also tried the same configuration on Linux and NT with the same
results. Is "T=jserv-servlet" in the rewrite rule correct if you are using
mod_jk? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Right, that's why I expected crappy performance from the servlet as a
whole, since I synchronized the method. What has me bothered is the 39
requests per second on iPlanet, 16 requests per second talking straight
to Tomcat 3.3 and 4 requests per second talking to Apache 1.3.19 w/
mod_jk.so in ajp13 mode talking to Tomcat 3.3.
I could understand like a 30%->50% performance drop from
iPlanet->Apache, but from 39 RPS to 4 RPS seems a bit absurd.

Well, let's just cut the whole insert out of the formula and state
that it's an update. It has to be synchronized since a request from a
luser comes in, we take that data get data out of the database, add them
together and update it back into the database. It's not a scientific
kind of thing nor are lives depending on it, but if it's not synchonized
and I push 1000 requests against it about 100 of them actually get
counted, while syncronized they all get counted. And actually in testing
against iPlanet itself the syncronized was just a smidge faster than
non-syncronized. We think it has something to do with Oracle's row
locking on updates.

Re: instanciate a servlet when tomcat starts

2001-05-09 Thread Benoit Jacquemont

Hi Sandrine,

You have to change (or create if doesn't exist) the web.xml file that comes
in the WEB-INF directory.

The example below is the entire content of a web.xml file that loads the
ServletInit servlet and instantiate it (to the name defined by servlet-name)
on startup. The load-on-startup property must be different than 0 to have the
servlet loaded and instantiate at the startup of the app (when tomcat starts).

tomcat 4 and support for iis

I too want to make the transition from tomcat 3.2.1 to 4.0, however, I can't do
this without support for iis in place.

Yes, I know that the connector for apache 1.3 is currently being developed with
a common code base that can be used to develop a connector for iis, and
resources working on this aspect are limited.

Notwithstanding this, can anyone please provide an estimate/guestimate of the

I use tomcat with security. And I want to assign FilePermissions on
different directories for different users /home/user1 /home/user2. Each user
should have permission to write his own directory.
Unfortunally it seems that the codeBase part of an grant section does not
work. If I granted FilePermission to a directory without codeBase set it
works. With codeBase set it does not work.
Is there anything to know about how Tomcat needs grant entries or did I miss

If you need my policy file I will post it.

Thanks for your help

Re: Developing on a different platform from production

2001-05-09 Thread Benoit Jacquemont

Hi Bill,

We are developping on MS Windows 2000 boxes (as a lot of people I think), and
we deploy our apps on Linux servers (again, as a lot of people... ;-) ).

We never had any problems, but we always compile the source code on a
development machine running exactly the same environment as the server.
Anyway, we used to compile on Windows and deploy on Linux, and we never had
any problem of incompatibility. Now our compilation of the source code on the
same OS is just a consequence of a quality plan.

Re: Developing on a different platform from production

2001-05-09 Thread Ben Ricker

It depends on what you mean by 'test'. If you are doing load testing,
then obviously this will not do as the platform and OS can dictate
performance. Also, there are differing problems in the jdks based on
platform: Sun jdk w/Hotspot has had some problems lately which do not
crop up on the other jdks (Sun's jdk is usually ahead of Linux's, or so
I have noticed. 1.3 was in beta well after 1.3 was released for Sun).

However, if you are just talking about functional testing, I think going
to a Linux box is Ok.

Btw, have you seen the new Netra series of Sun boxes? They are damn
cheap and may be an alternative to Linux. I myself suport a web app that
runs on Linux is production but will move to a Linux/Sun load balanced
solution soon.

Class loader problems with Tomcat 3.2.1 and Struts web apps - Help!

I have two struts-based web apps installed under a single instance of Tomcat

server.xml as follows:

Accessing the first web application is fine. The problem that I am having
is that any attempt to access start.do on the second web application
(/enroll), the server log returns:

It seems as if it is attempting to load classes within the context of the
first web application. If I reverse the order of the context definitions in
server.xml, I will have a similar problem with the /cdl app.

I have verified the following:
- struts.jar exists only in the WEB-INF/lib directory of each web
application
- tomcat.log verifies that the web.xml of each application is being read

I have tried setting up different AJP12 workers to service each application
but that seems to have no effect.

I have also noticed that the jasper.log shows "Classpath according to the
servlet engine" referring only to one of the two web apps.

Is it possible to have two web apps running in a single instance of Tomcat?
Have I overlooked something? I did not have any problems doing the same
thing with JRun...

Any insight is appreciated.

RE: Tomcat + SSL Certificates

2001-05-09 Thread Sean Pritchard

I have been able to get Tomcat to support SSL in standalone mode just fine.
There is a very brief write-up of the procedure in the Tomcat documentation
and an example connector in the example web.xml file. I was initially
concerned because the write-up is so short, but it turned out that following
the steps as outlined worked fine. No long write-up was needed. You do
need to download the security extensions from Sun but this is all covered in
the documentation.

As I understand it, tomcat by itself does not support any certificates. If
you want to use SSL then you need to integrate it with another webserver.

I user tomcat with apache-modssl and it works great.

Upgrading Tomcat to fix bug...

I want to remedy the "view source code" bug in Tomcat 3.x...

I have searched around and cannot find anything on how to upgrade my tomcat

Is it as simple as unzipping the new tomcat code over my 3.2.1 install?? I
dont want to do anything that will mess up my original configuration..

If upgrading is a bad idea, are there any other suggestions other than
upgrading to fix the %70 "view jsp source" bug?

Thanks in advance..

Current Configuration:
OS: Win2k
WebEngine: IIS5
Tomcat v3.2.1
DB: mySQL

FYI: the above config is working very nicely (except for the tomcat bug..)
Thanks!

mod_jk.conf-auto automatic generating

2001-05-09 Thread André Martiniano

Hy

My TomCat is not automaticaly generating the
mod_jk.conf-auto file. As said in documentation, each TomCat inicialization
should be generate this file. However, the tomcat-apache.conf file is been
generated automaticaly. Anyone knows why?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Jsp's not executing server-side code

2001-05-09 Thread J. Patrick Lanigan

The mod_jk.conf file was missing the AddModule line. Anyhow, I've got tomcat
serving jsp's/servlets now, but if I try and hit domain/examples/ I get an
apache directory listing. If I then hit refresh I get a 'Not Found' error.
Also, if I try to hit some of the static pages within tomcats examples
directory, I get a 404 error.

Ideas and suggestions?
Thanks,
Patrick

Using Digest method of JDBCRealm

2001-05-09 Thread Larry Rogers

Hi All,

I'm trying to use the static Digest method included in JDBCRealm in
Tomcat 4b3 from the command line. When I execute the following

$ java -classpath catalina.jar org.apache.catalina.realm.JDBCRealm -a
MD5 pass

from tomcat/server/lib, I get the output at the end of this message. I
have the same trouble using the Digest method from a simple web application.

I want to use the Digest method provided by Tomcat to store encrypted
passwords in the JDBCRealm database for use in authenticating users of
my web apps. If anyone is able to do this, what did you have to do to
get it to work?

Thanks for any help,

Larry
