Tomcat 5.5.9 not picking up changes

2005-08-24 Thread MC Moisei
I configured Tomcat 5.5.9 for my development station. I moved from 4.1.30
where the classes where pickup on the fly. (Maybe I shouldn't have moved
since all worked so nice)

I know things changed since 4.1 but I think I'm doing thing right. In conf
folder I defined the context file like below

Context debug=0 reloadable=true crossContext=true
antiJARLocking=true antiResourceLocking=true
docBase=c:/projects/projname/webApplication/

Anything else I should do ? Anyone is debugging using this configuration ?
It's pretty annoying to restart server after changes.

Your thoughts are appreciated!!!
MC

session timeout problems

2005-08-24 Thread Joerg
Hello,

within my web application i defined a session timeout of 30 minutes.
But some sessions strangly survive this timeout and keep being valid
until an explicit call to invalidate().
I already implemented a HttpSessionListener to keep track of session
creation, destruction, lastAccessedTime and MaxInactiveInterval. So i
recieve a HttpSessionEvent for every session being created or destroyed.
I recognized that i never got a call to
sessionDestroyed(HttpSessionEvent) for those strange timeout survivers.

I am quite lost and have no idea how to solve this situation.
Any suggestions ?

Greets,
Joerg

Sharing non-session data in a cluster

2005-08-24 Thread Joakim Ahlén

Hi!

Is there any way of sharing data within a cluster which is not stored in
session? Think of this as sharing the application state or some
cluster-wide global state.

Remotely restart Tomcat container (not just a context)

2005-08-24 Thread Richard Gaywood
Hi List!

I have two Tomcat installs. One is on Windows, and hosts our build
system for our web service software. The other is on Linux, and is
where the build system deploys to. I want to run unit tests on the
Windows host that hit on the freshly deployed code on the Linux host.

So far, so good but there is a snag: the web service uses JNI. So,
whenever a new context is deployed, I have to restart the Tomcat
container to avoid classloader problems -- it tries to load the JNI
wrapper class twice, which causes it to just stop working.
Unfortunatly, the JNI is non-negotiable so I can't just remove it
(which is what I'd prefer to do anyway).

About the only way I can see out of this is with a SUID or suexec CGI
script run under Apache HTTPD on the Linux host to allow the Windows
host to remotely tear down and bring up Tomcat. The system is behind
firewalls and only used for development, so the security problems
aren't too much of an issue...

Actually, I just thought of a better way: use the Ant SSH task on the
Windows system with a passwordless certificate to allow logins to the
Linux host and arbitrary command line commands. That's neater than
CGI, at least.

Can anyone suggest any better methods I have overlooked?

RE: Has anyone used Tomcat 5.5.9 connecting to MS SQL Server usin g JNDI and Connection Pooling?

2005-08-24 Thread Wylie, Ian
Hi Allistair,

I just got the basic JNDI datasource working for MS SQL Server with Tomcat
5.5.

I tried using the ConnectionPoolDataSource instead of the standard
DataSource but I cannot get this working.

Not sure whether I need to replace the
res-typejavax.sql.DataSource/res-type with something else in the web.xml
file.

I changed the driverclass name from the standard datasource class of
com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver - used with standard datasource
to the com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSource class used by MS
connection pooling in the TOMCAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/webappname.xml
file. Also added the factory for PooledConnections -
factory=com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSourceFactory to the
TOMCAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/webappname.xml file.

Any ideas to get the MS Connection Pooling working, or is there no need in
Tomcat 5.5 - In aother words does Tomcat 5.5 automatically used Cnnection
Pooling with a datasource??

Many thanks for your help with this.

Best Regards,

Ian

Hi Wade,

Can you perhaps resend the configuration files

server.xml
web.xml
yourapp.xml
listing of files in common/lib
listing of files in yourapp/WEB-INF/lib

Again?

Cheers, Allistair.

RE: Has anyone used Tomcat 5.5.9 connecting to MS SQL Server using JNDI and Connection Pooling?

2005-08-24 Thread Allistair Crossley
Hey Ian,

Great that you got that working in the end. Did you find out what caused the
issues? I'm not convinced you need to use the ConnectionPoolDataSource, since
that's what DBCP is doing for you (I think - please someone correct me if I am
wrong). You could try using javax.sql.ConnectionPoolDataSource in your res-type
and in the JNDI configuration, but I am not sure if DBCP will allow you to do
that. Have a go. I just use the DataSource implementation and we've had great
success and performance with it.

Cheers, Allistair.

 Hi Allistair,

 I just got the basic JNDI datasource working for MS SQL
 Server with Tomcat
 5.5.

 I tried using the ConnectionPoolDataSource instead of the standard
 DataSource but I cannot get this working.

 Not sure whether I need to replace the
 res-typejavax.sql.DataSource/res-type with something else
 in the web.xml
 file.

 I changed the driverclass name from the standard datasource class of
 com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver - used with
 standard datasource
 to the com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSource
 class used by MS
 connection pooling in the
 TOMCAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/webappname.xml
 file. Also added the factory for PooledConnections -
 factory=com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSourceFact
 ory to the
 TOMCAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/webappname.xml file.

 Any ideas to get the MS Connection Pooling working, or is
 there no need in
 Tomcat 5.5 - In aother words does Tomcat 5.5 automatically
 used Cnnection
 Pooling with a datasource??

 Many thanks for your help with this.

 Best Regards,

 Ian

Hi again,

By the way, you really ought to consider *not* using the MS drivers. jTDS at
jtds.sourceforge.net is more performant.

jakarta-tomcat-deployer Installation on Windows XP ???

2005-08-24 Thread Vincent Blondel

Hello all,

I am a complete newbie for all about tomcat.

So in this context, I installed yesterday Tomcat 5.5.9 on my Windows XP machine
to discover the product and the possibility for me to
develop a complete web (java oriented) web site. I also would try the ability
for IBM Websphere 5.1.1 to generate war files I can
deploy on my Tomcat installation.

So I also installed jakarta-tomcat-admin and I am now trying to install
jakarta-tomcat-deployer ... and that is really my problem.

Can somebody explain me how I have to install jakarta-tomcat-deployer ... I am
sorry for this stupid question but I haven't found any
explanation for this.

Regards
Vincent

Making a Database Image Show Up on a Jsp Page

2005-08-24 Thread Philip Cote
I'm trying to write to binary data from a MySQL database into a jpeg
file so I can show it on a jsp page but I'm not having much luck. My
bean can create files outside the servlet / jsp context using the usual
java.io classes. As I understand it, java.io classes aren't allowed for
EJBs. Does this apply to plain java beans as well? If so, what are the
alternatives for doing what I'm trying to do?

Re: Making a Database Image Show Up on a Jsp Page

2005-08-24 Thread Larry Meadors
You could do it easily with a servlet - read the blob as a byte[], and
server it up in response to a request to /myservlet/imageid/image.jpg,
where /imageid/ is used to provide the id of the record that contains
the image.

your java classes can do anything the VM process is permitted to do,
unless you have restricted using a security manager and the
catalina.policy file (i think eg. debian tomcat packages do that by
default). i'm not sure just jow exactly you are trying to serve those
images to the client and why you want to write them (temporarily) to the
file system. i would probably want to send them back directly from
memory after reading them from the DB as a blob (much like Larry Meadors
just suggested while i was writing this ...).

Problem defining welcom-file

2005-08-24 Thread jonas skrebys
Hi everyone,
could you please halep a newbie of Tomcat :)

I have deployed an application under webaps/myApp
folder
and I want that under URL that holds /myApp folder the
welcome file would be exposed to client.

in myApp/WEB-INF folder I create web.xml file and fill
with text :

web-app
 welcome-file-list
  welcome-filewelcomeFile.jsp/welcome-file
  /welcome-file-list
/web-app

Of course I put that file in myApp folder, but it does
not work.

When URL contains path/myApp/welcomeFile.jsp it is
displayed.

When URL contains only path/myApp a HTTP 404 error is
generated :(

Please, I'd be very thankfull for your ideas.

Thanks
Jonas

Yes and no, you can't simply replace it's content, but you also have to change
web.xml
remove those lines to suppres use of precompiled index.jsp :

servlet
servlet-nameorg.apache.jsp.index_jsp/servlet-name
servlet-classorg.apache.jsp.index_jsp/servlet-class
/servlet

servlet-mapping
servlet-nameorg.apache.jsp.index_jsp/servlet-name

/servlet-mapping

 I want to change something on my own website from index.jsp to index.html?

just remove index.jsp mapping in web.xml, tomcat will then do the default
searching

Tomcat 5.5.9 missing jars ?

Hi
I downloaded Tomcat 5.5.9 (zip file as well as exe) and it seems to be

The documentation says that the file exists. I have tried searching the

Any information/pointers will be very helpful.

Thanks

Thanks Allistair for the information,
I am running my own web application and it is already working in 5.0.28
When I try to run it under 5.5.9, the JNDI errors pop up.
Unable to create resource instance or something like that.
I see the naming-common.jar and naming-java.jar are missing under common/lib

Now if these jars are not shipped with Tomcat, how does the default java
namespace in the JNDI work ?

Hi,

It looks like you are another developer who thinks the transition from 5.0.x to
5.5.x is just copying your webapp across. Unfortunalte you'll need to configure
JNDI datasources in a different way in 5.5.x. Check out the manual pages to see
how.

Tomcat5.5.9 - Apache Connector

2005-08-24 Thread Deepak J
Hi,

I'm trying to configure the Apache-Tomcat Connector for Apache 2.0 and
Tomcat 5.5.9 on my Redhat ES3.0.
I downloaded the mod_jk (1.2.14) connector files : prefork and worker .so
files.
I' trying the Using TomCat Autoconfigure as given in the Apache website :
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/connectors-doc/howto/apache.html.

The problem :
As per the site: After making changes to Apache's httpd.conf anf Tomcat's
server.xml and restarting Tomcat, the mod_jk.conf file must get generated.
But this mod_jk.conf is not being generated.

Where could the mistake be?
Could anyone help me?

Re: Viewing PDF in Internet Explorer

2005-08-24 Thread CFerraro

I should have been more clear in stating my problem.

I am using a Reporting software with Tomcat. The Reporting servlet
receives the report request, passes it to the
Reporting Server (lives where the data is), and the Reporting Server sends
it back to the client (servlet). The output
HTML is automatically generated, and apparently the following is happening
with PDF (the Excel plug-in
works fine).

A JSP-Page (or Servlet) like

  %
response.setContentType(application/pdf);
  %

results in the Content-Type-Header

  Content-Type: application/pdf;charset=ISO-8859-1

which is not allowed according to HTTP-RFCs. The charset may only be
appended
when the Content-Type is text/*.

It causes bad behaviour with IE, that's this can be critical for some
Servlets.

If Mozilla Firefox is used instead of IE, the pdf loads in the browser.
Unfortunately, the decision to switch browsers is not mine and
I don't want to switch to IIS with the New Atlanta servlet engine.

Thanks,
Chris Ferraro

What issue? If you are needing to get a page to load a PDF you have two
options.

   1. Set an A tag with the source value set to the location of the
PDF. This will load the PDF in the entire window assuming that they
have the PDF plug in installed.

   2. The other option is to use frames and have the PDF load as the
source of one of the frames. This will load the PDF in one of the
frames and give you space around it if you need it.

Did that answer your question? If not we would need at lest a hint of
what problem is.

RE: how to update tomcat?

2005-08-24 Thread Allistair Crossley
Hi,

Not sure if there's a migration guide, but roughly

1. Download Tomcat 5.0.x or 5.5.x
2. Read the configuration guide for those parts you've configured in 4.1 to see
how to do it in 5.0.x/5.5.x
3. Move your webapp WAR to the new webapps, make configuration changes
4. Test.

Your webapp *should* run alright itself, but it's normally the Tomcat
configuration parts that stop smooth migration, so ensure you understand how
you're configured in 4.1, e.g datasource, realms, hosts etc.. and make sure you
do it the correct way in 5.0/5.5

Allistair.

RE: Has anyone used Tomcat 5.5.9 connecting to MS SQL Server usin g JNDI and Connection Pooling?

2005-08-24 Thread Wylie, Ian
Hi Allistair,

The problem was that I had duplicated the
TOMCAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/webappname.xml entry in server.xml.  So
I removed the context element from server.xml.

Then, the basic datasource JNDI started working.

I will investigate the change you suggested for Connection Pooling as well
as have a look at jTDS.

I will report back after further investigations.

It is great to be able to use Tomcat 5.5 with the JVM 1.5.

I have just downloaded and installed Eclipse 3.1 which can compile using the
JVM 1.5 - as one of my other tasks currently is to call a .NET web service
from Java. I am hoping to get this working using Apache SOAP.

Many thanks for your help with this.

Best Regards,

Ian

Hi again,

By the way, you really ought to consider *not* using the MS drivers. jTDS at
jtds.sourceforge.net is more performant.

 Hi Allistair,

 I just got the basic JNDI datasource working for MS SQL
 Server with Tomcat
 5.5.

 I tried using the ConnectionPoolDataSource instead of the standard
 DataSource but I cannot get this working.

 Not sure whether I need to replace the
 res-typejavax.sql.DataSource/res-type with something else
 in the web.xml
 file.

 I changed the driverclass name from the standard datasource class of
 com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver - used with
 standard datasource
 to the com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSource
 class used by MS
 connection pooling in the
 TOMCAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/webappname.xml
 file. Also added the factory for PooledConnections -
 factory=com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSourceFact
 ory to the
 TOMCAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/webappname.xml file.

 Any ideas to get the MS Connection Pooling working, or is
 there no need in
 Tomcat 5.5 - In aother words does Tomcat 5.5 automatically
 used Cnnection
 Pooling with a datasource??

 Many thanks for your help with this.

I think same as Crossley.

to add to his sayings..

i suggest you to keep the tomcat 4.0 in the system and install 5.x.x in
other port than 4.0 configuration like 8080.

when everything is done you can close 4.0 and run with fresh 5.x.x

Good luck

Hi,

It looks like you are another developer who thinks the transition from 5.0.x
to 5.5.x is just copying your webapp across. Unfortunalte you'll need to
configure JNDI datasources in a different way in 5.5.x. Check out the manual
pages to see how.

 Thanks Allistair for the information,
 I am running my own web application and it is already working
 in 5.0.28
 When I try to run it under 5.5.9, the JNDI errors pop up.
 Unable to create resource instance or something like that.
 I see the naming-common.jar and naming-java.jar are missing

 Now if these jars are not shipped with Tomcat, how does the

Re: get is not supported

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the answer but
You have both parameters for doGet method as HttpServletRequest, the 2nd
parameter
is supposed to be of type HttpServletResponse

 your java classes can do anything the VM process is

 catalina.policy file (i think eg. debian tomcat
 packages do that by
 default). i'm not sure just jow exactly you are
 trying to serve those

I have never heard that EJB could not use java.io
classes. That wouldn't make much sense. Even JDBC
some times needs to use streams for it's data.
ByteArrayOutputStream and StringWriter are at times
needed to perform a task as well for certain things.
Sometimes people will make a servlet like this then
address this servlet for all images. You'll need to
set the content type of your return and stream the
bytes out of your DB to the response output in your
servlet. Depending on the type of field you have used
in the DB you can do something like:

java.io.InputStream in = null;
try
{
   in = resultSet.getBinaryStream(columnName);
   java.io.BufferedInputStream bin =
   new java.io.BufferedInputStream(in);
   java.io.BufferedOutputStream bout =
   new java.io.
BufferedOutputStream(response.getServletOutputStream());
  int iread = bin.read();
  while(iread!=-1)
  {
bout.write(iread);
iread = bin.read();
  }
  bout.flush();
}
finally
{
   if(in!=null)
   {
  in.close();
   }
}

Just be sure you have your content type setup and all
you need to do there. Then you can simply have a
servlet to read images and use as the endpoint in your
IMG tags. It's not so bad.

RE: newbie with a short question

2005-08-24 Thread Allistair Crossley
Hi,

I did this the other day with a bat file.

First I cause an open/save prompt with

response.addHeader(Content-Disposition, attachment; filename=somebat.bat);

Then I use the response.getOutputStream() and stream the bat file down it. This
requires of course that you get an inputstream to your bat file first. Copy it
into your webapp somewhere and use the servlet context
getRealPath(/bat/mybat.bat) and then i/o API to read it into an input stream
before sending outbound again.

I found that setting content type of application/msdos-x-batch failed, as did
others, just send it without a content type as a open/save.

You'd do this in a servlet.

Allistair

 application/msdos-x-batch failed, as did others, just send it
 without a content type as a open/save.

I must be missing something; how does the above cause an existing .bat
file on the server to be executed on the server? (That was the original
question.)

For the OP: the CGI doc for Tomcat can be found at
