[Toolserver-l] Redirects for toolserver.org moved to WMF

2014-12-11 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi all,

two days ago we switched the DNS record so that the redirects from
toolserver.org to wmflabs.org are now handled by WMF. This means: You
can no longer contact me/WMDE or Marlen for updating any redirects.

Please check if everything's working correctly.

Coren, am I right in assuming that people contact you directly if there
are any changes needed?

Best, Silke

[Toolserver-l] Call for help to Merlbot's Death Anomalies Table

2014-09-24 Thread Silke Meyer
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all!

As you might know, Merl's bot framework Merlbot is one of the last few
projects left on the Toolserver. Merl put a lot of work into
modifications and rewriting code to be able to run it in Tool Labs. He
is running out of time as database replication will stop on Oct 5th.

Any volunteers to support him in finishing before that deadline?

What you could do is work on a part of Merlbot called Death Anomalies
Table [1]. It generates daily probably dead reports in 15 Wikipedias
to point to articles about people marked dead in a different language.
The code of the death anomalies table [1] consists of nine bash
scripts in which SQL queries have to be adapted for Tool Labs.

If you are prepared to dive into SQL, please contact Merl [2] as soon
as possible.

Cheers, Silke

[Toolserver-l] New deadline: Get your data off the Toolserver until Sept 30th!!!

2014-09-12 Thread Silke Meyer
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all!

I had announced that August 31st would be the deadline for retrieving
backups from the toolserver. As you were right in telling me, hey,
that's in the middle of everybody's vacation, the stuff is still
there. But:

Come and get your backups before the end of September!

Once the toolserver is physically decommissioned, the data will be
deleted! Gone. Forever.

And as stated before:

If you are interested in migrating, maintaining, resurrecting someone
else's tools, please contact that person and ask first!

If you are contacted by others for you own code, I strongly encourage
you to *free the knowledge* and let them work on it.
(Yes, sometimes old work looks embarrassing nowadays, but it can
always help others to figure things out, to get ideas, to improve
tools. So for the greater good[TM] please free it.)

Thanks and cheers,
Silke

[Toolserver-l] Missing Toolserver features? Tell us!

2014-07-07 Thread Silke Meyer
Dear tool devs!

Rumour has it that quite a few of you have problems to run their tools
in Tool Labs because of unresolved issues in Bugzilla / missing features.

If you are among them, please complain loudly and point me to the
bugzilla link! If they get fixed, please test them for your tools as
soon as possible.

Also, it is very helpful to make your bugzilla entry block one of the
following three tracking bugs:

* 58791 Missing Toolserver features in Tools [1]
* 58788 Toolserver migration to Tools [2]
* 58797 OSM on Labs [3]

Re: [Toolserver-l] Collection of issues after Toolserver shutdown

2014-07-01 Thread Silke Meyer
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hey all,

there we are on the day after account expiration. A few words on what
is going to happen to the code left on Toolserver.

First of all THANK YOU for migrating so many tools!!! It's awesome
that so many of you made this extra effort and I know that for many
this has been / still is very demanding and time-consuming!
I would also like to thank all those among you who worked on the
migration process itself, who gave me information, explanations and
ideas, who reminded me of stuff or just *did* useful stuff. This has
been very helpful for me as you know much more about the Toolserver
and its integration into the Wikiverse than I do.
Nosy, Mette and Coren still have a lot of work ahead, too, but thanks
a lot to you as well, for helping all the users during migration and
for having issues on the radar!
Finally, thank you again, DaB., for the years of commitment you put
into the Toolserver and its community. And thanks to River whom I
never met but who left structures other admins could deal with.

What's next?

To those who haven't migrated: Quite a lot of you can find your tools
on this list already:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Tool_Labs/Collection_of_issues_after_Toolserver_shutdown#This_is_the_tool_I_miss_most_.2F_Dieses_Tool_fehlt_mir_am_meisten

About migrating now:
You can still get your backups from ts-adm...@toolserver.org and
migrate. There are some volunteer helpers around on that page (lower
part) so if you need support, ask them. Once you've created a tool
in Tool Labs and uploaded your files, you can add other maintainers
with a click.

About other people's files:
Valhallasw, you asked if someone could get all the backups and archive
them. The problem are the private files in there (esp. in the home
directories). Nobody can sit down and sort the files of hundreds of
tools and decide which ones to give to others. This is why we hand
over backups to the owners only.
The contents of your public_html folders were accessible until
yesterday. If they are under a free license (and this has to be
checked in detail, too), we strongly recommend to contact the authors
about reusing the code because some might not be completely
comfortable with others looking at their code in detail.
I would like to encourage all of you to let other interested people
work on your code. It's a great opportunity to learn from how others
deal with it / from what they make out of it. So, if you are contacted
by others, it would be cool if you freed the knowledge!
If others turn to us / the ts-admins and request access to your
public_html folders and it's free software, we will contact you if
possible. If we don't hear from you then, we will hand it over,
assuming that this is why you put it under a free license.

About deletion of data:
Backups are kept until August 31st 2014!
Once Toolserver will be physically decommissioned in Haarlem, we'll
have to purge all hard disks. So please come and get your backups or
other people's code you want to work on *before August 31st*!

Cheers,
Silke

[Toolserver-l] Reminder: Tools only on Tool Labs from July 1

2014-06-04 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi everyone,

please spread this reminder!

About one year ago, we, Wikimedia Deutschland e. V., announced June 30th
as the deadline of the Toolserver migration (Roadmap at [1]). This
deadline is approaching. The Toolserver will stop working on June 30th.
What will happen afterwards?

Background information
The Toolserver is a community based infrastructure that hosts software
supporting Wikipedia and its sister projects. Over the years many active
volunteers have developed helpful and great software tools that are
running on several Wikimedia projects.
The Toolserver is operated by Wikimedia Deutschland with assistance from
the Wikimedia Foundation and several chapters. For many reasons, the
Toolserver will be discontinued and replaced by Tool Labs [2], a
platform operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. Please see the reasons at
[3]. For more than one year Wikimedia Deutschland has been coordinating
the migration of software tools from Toolserver to Tool Labs.

What editors should know
The toolserver is a community-driven project. The tools shall be
migrated by the developers resp. maintainers themselves. Many of them
have already migrated their tools or have indicated that they will do so
before the end of this month. We have a special agreement with the
OpenStreetMap projects and with the developer of Merlbot [4] to ensure
these tools don’t stop working. All other tools will stop working by
July 1st.

What editors can do
On Tool Labs [2], you can look up if the tools that you use and need
have already moved there.
Talk to the developers of your favourite tools: It is important to let
them know how much you appreciate their tools and that you need them to
do your work.
Contact us if you don’t know who these developers are or if you have any
questions or if you want us to forward wishes or requests to tool
developers. Contact information is given at the end of this text.

Information for tool developers
If you are still facing the migration of your tools, please keep in mind
that lots of people use your tools. They are a great support for their
daily work and will be missed when they fail. Please take the time to
migrate them or poke us: WMDE can still support you during migration -
what we can’t do is maintain abandoned tools in the long run.
From July 1st on, the toolserver admins will still hand you over your
backups upon request and create redirects to Tool Labs for you. You
won’t be able to log in to the toolserver anymore though.
If anyone wants to have and reuse other people’s code, we recommend to
seek approval from them directly, even if from a legal point of view
there is no problem. Don’t hesitate to talk to us if you need a contact
person.

Re: [Toolserver-l] [Labs-l] DEPRECATED: tools.wikimedia.de - Get rid of it!

2014-05-20 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi again,

Indeed. Assuming WMDE isn't planning on not having any web servers, their
existing web server for wikimedia.de can keep redirecting tools.wikimedia.de
 to toolserver.org. No changes necessary.

So okay, not making any change to the DNS entry is completely okay for
me. WMF ops then have to decide about the SSL certificate question.

If WMDE really wants to remove them, they could point that subdomain to
WMF servers and have WMF do the redirect and simply don't provide an SSL
certificate. E.g. WMF would use a self-signed certificate or an invalid one
 like
the one for wikipedia.org, WMF does this all the time for old or unused
 domains:

 wikipedia.com
 * https://www.wikipedia.com/

 wikimediacommons.org
 * https://wikimediacommons.org/

And if we really really want, one could purchase a separate certificate for
 just
tools.wikimedia.org (so that the wildcard one isn't needed) and transfer
 only
 that to WMF.

For me, it is important that I don't have to deal with that domain any
longer. Simply keeping the CNAME causes on work at all. If you at WMF
want to handle the certificate question in the future, you can go
ahead. At the Hackathon, I understood that Coren is no fan of such a
solution though.

Best, Silke

This is a very legitimate question and I would appreciate a (public)
answer to this for the sake of transparency.

There we go:
It is not a trivial redirect: Wikimedia Deutschland will obviously not
give the wildcard SSL certificate for *.wikimedia.de to WMF (and WMF
would not want to have it). This would mean we would have to
completely delegate that subdomain to WMF and guarantee that it stays
like that forever. This is hard to guarantee and it is also misleading
to delegate a .de subdomain to the Foundation.
This is why I'm asking tool developers to replace this link in their
tools. (Yes, it is used inside older tools, not just somewhere in this
internet.)

[Toolserver-l] Please update the toolserver links in Gadgets

2014-05-10 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi!

Currently, some gadgets still have links pointing to the toolserver.
As they aren't really numerous, please help update them to point to
Tool Labs to avoid ugliness. (A simple find replace doesn't always
work, please test you changes.)

Find the list for some wikis like so:
enwp:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearchprofile=advancedsearch=toolserverfulltext=Searchns8=1profile=advanced
dewp:
https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearchprofile=advancedsearch=toolserverfulltext=Searchns8=1profile=advanced
commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearchprofile=advancedsearch=toolserverfulltext=Searchns8=1profile=advanced
On commons, there are quite some more than in the Wikipedias.

Thanks for your help!

[Toolserver-l] DEPRECATED: tools.wikimedia.de - Get rid of it!

2014-05-09 Thread Silke Meyer
Dear tool maintainers!

The domain tools.wikimedia.de, aliasing toolserver.org, has been
deprecated for a very long time. It is legacy from the past and we
kept it for your convenience so you wouldn't have to modify any tool.

With the toolserver redirects to Tool Labs things are getting
complicated enough without this old stuff. If you have very old tools
and you are still using tools.wikimedia.de, please get rid of that
domain! After the toolserver's shutdown, this redirect will on longer
work.

Thanks for your understanding!
Cheers, Silke

[Toolserver-l] Reminder: Account expiry and migration

2013-12-20 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi all!

Just a little reminder:

Your toolserver accounts will expire on January 6th, 2014. You can renew
it with acctrenew as usual.

If you had an expired account and you want to come back and collect your
data: Your account has been reactivated until that date. You can login
to nightshade and use the script byebye to collect your stuff. It will
create a new directory inside your home directory called FarewellBundle.
This directory contains tarballs of almost everything you had on the
toolserver. The only thing you have to take care of separately is your
stuff in /mnt/user-store. Please download the data you don't need on the
toolserver any longer!

If you don't need your account any longer you can delete it using the
script burnbridges. It will delete everything but your
~/public_html/.htaccess files in case you have a redirect to Tool Labs.
For us, it would be very helpful if you deleted you data yourselves.

If you find some time before January 6th, please consider migrating your
tools to Tool Labs [1][2], as the toolserver will be discontinued in mid
2014. If you hit barriers that prevent you from migrating, please create
bugs in Bugzilla [3]! We can meet in an IRC office hour in January to
discuss them. The office hour will be announced separately at the
beginning of January.

[Toolserver-l] FYI: Toolserver account expiry in early January

2013-11-11 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi!

The toolserver will run until June 30th 2014. Nothing changed about this
date.

As announced to all toolserver user accounts today, all accounts will
expire in January 2014. They can be renewed as usual. The two
toolserver admins Marlen Caemmerer and Alexander Mette provided two
scripts which will help you to pack and download your data and delete
them afterwards.

The reasons for my decision to have the accounts expire: First of all,
I would like to remind everyone to think about their tools' migration
early and get help if needed. Second, we are dealing the data of a few
hundred expired accounts already. The owners shall have the chance to
re-login and collect their data. They have been reactivated and will
expire in January, too. Third, I would like to encourage all those who
already moved over to Tool Labs to download and then their stuff
themselves.

Best, Silke

Re: [Toolserver-l] Need Tool Labs migration support?

2013-10-10 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi again,

 * Make copies of the source of those tools publicly available (they should
all be open source, but some directories are not accessibly for other users
 from shell IIRC)
 * Keep a Foundation-readable snapshot of the toolserver home directories,
 user-store, DB dumps etc.

I found this this suggestion rather surprising and I'd like to discuss
it with the TS admins first. Not sure if we can just do that. I'll get
 back to you.

ok, I consulted Nosy, DaB. and Mette about this proposal and we will not
make the home directories accessible to others. They can contain all
sorts of private data, user names, e-mail addresses, ssh keys, who knows
what else - maybe even gpg keys, so handing the complete package over is
no option. I wouldn't want to intrude into the people's stuff. And
we'd get in trouble with the law here, as the German data protection act
is binding for us.

It's the slower way to contact all maintainers (which will happen
repeatedly) but hey, we've got plenty of time left.

Cheers, Silke

Re: [Toolserver-l] Toolserver wiki

2013-09-30 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi MZMcBride and all,

as far as I know, TS wiki has not been discussed. Thanks for bringing it up!

I suppose keeping content means quite some triage. We don't need
information specific to the toolserver on wikitech, but everybody should
indeed migrate their tools' documentation from tswiki to
wikitech.wikimedia.org as part of the migration process. A good place is
under your userspace on wikitech.

MZMcBride, did you have other content in mind than singular tools' docs?

Cheers, Silke

2013/9/28 MZMcBride z...@mzmcbride.com

 Hi.

Do we have plans for the Toolserver wiki (https://wiki.toolserver.org/)?
There's some very good content in/on the wiki that would be nice to move
 to either wikitech.wikimedia.org or mediawiki.org, I think.

Has this been discussed anywhere? Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

2013-09-27 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi all!

When it comes to the question of migrating tools to Tool Labs, some of you
might notice that you don't have the amount of time needed for maintenance
that you had earlier. WMDE offered to help you with the actual migration
but we can't maintain abandoned tools in the long run. For migration
support, contact me!

Note that in Tool Labs *every* tool is a multi-maintainer project! This
shall make it easier for you to bring others in. On the toolserver you can
add a ticket in Jira to request for your project to become an MMP, so
others can join you before migration and help with it.

Best, Silke

[Toolserver-l] Maintainer(s) wanted: Contribs, new pages and others

2013-09-27 Thread Silke Meyer
Erwin85 is looking for people to maintain his very popular tools [1] (as he
wrote on [2]). They are currently running on the toolserver. If you are
looking for a project to help with, please have a look at the tools.

If you are interested in helping to maintain one or a few of them, here are
your next steps:
* Contact Erwin85. ;)
* Ask in Jira [3] to have the tool you want to work on transformed into a
multi-maintainer project and have yourself added to it.
* Migrate them to Tool Labs. (WMDE can help here, if you want. Contact me!)
* Take over responsibility for long term maintenance of one or several of
the tools.

Cheers, Silke

[Toolserver-l] Hem hem... PLEASE let's move forward! From TS towards Labs (was: Re: TS and/vs. Labs)

2013-08-30 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi!

I think that everybody understands that with the migration we ask you
volunteers a lot, especially if your tools can't just move as they are:
You have been doing this extra work as a hobby for *years* which I have
a lot of respect and admiration for.

Still, I am reluctant to repeat discussions we had before because the
situation hasn't changed: OSI-approved licenses only. I take the wording
exceptions are possible but unlikely as no exceptions until I hear
of one, ok? ;)

For non-libre projects I would like to come back to what Ryan wrote:
Or people are free to move them to infrastructure that isn't funded by the
donations to a movement that has Open Content as one of the five pillars
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_is_free_content. The tools
and bots that keep this content alive and free are in my opinion an extension
 of that pillar.

I'm more than happy to recommend a number of cloud services and am more than
willing to give advice on how to configure and run tools and bots from those
services. It's even possible to reuse the work we're doing in the tools
project, or in the Wikimedia infrastructure via our puppet repository since
 our infrastructure is Open Source.

Ryan, Luis, could you write a bit more about whether it would be ok
(technically and legally) to run database queries in Tool Labs and send
them to an external server where a proprietary tool runs? Is that a no
go? An exception? Is it totally fine?

Concerning the support offer:
As we (as in WMDE) announced to accept support requests for migration
until September 30th 2013, I take it there is not that much need of it:
So far, my colleague Johannes is in touch with two projects only
(Merlissimo among them). If I am wrong, maintainers, please contact me
in the weeks to come!

Cheers, Silke

[Toolserver-l] Investigation on migrating Jira to Bugzilla - any volunteers around?

2013-08-29 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi all!

Today WMFs bug wrangler Andre Klapper visited our office and gave a QA
session about Bugzilla. Together with Daniel Kinzler, we discussed the
question if it's possible to migrate your tickets from Jira to Bugzilla.
(For all tools, that would be about 1100 open tickets at the moment, open,
reopened, in progress.)

The last status of the discussion (according to [1]):
* Tool maintainers can request their own bugzilla component.
* There doesn't seem to be a tool to migrate, so someone would have to
write and test it.
* Does it make sense to migrate tickets related to the toolserver
environment, not to the tool itself? (Tim: Yes, because of the historical
value)

Andre gave me these hints for an investigation:
(Don't laugh, maybe you know all this already.)

* Jira has a REST API, Bugzilla doesn't.
* Bugzilla has a json rpc (example:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/jsonrpc.cgi?method=Bugzilla.extensions)
* It's not likely that all fields can be transferred, it might be a good
idea to concentrate on the tool name and the status.
* To import tickets, Andre would take a list of all users that want their
tickets in Bugzilla but don't have an account. He could then create the
list of account IDs that the tickets are associated with.

Existing similar things the could help to find out more are below.

Now, I would like to know if there is anyone among you who would like to
investigate this further or has experience reports to pass along.
Best, Silke

[Toolserver-l] Tools using Google Maps and migration to Tool Labs

2013-08-27 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi again,

to take up a topic that was touched on at Wikimania and now discussed on
labs-l: Is it allowed to migrate tools that use Google Maps?

tl;dr: Hard to tell right now. Please provide examples! Ask about your
tools, give details!

Here is why:

Marc-Andre Pelletier and Luis Villa explained the following: The tool would
have to respect both the Labs Terms of Use and the Google Maps Terms of
Use. This can mean users have to read and acknowledge a disclaimer before a
tool can point to Google Maps.
Without concrete examples this is hard to analyse. How exactly would this
be used? If you want your tool to be looked at as an example please come to
labs-l and present it.

Kolossos also strongly recommended to look at open source tools like
OpenLayers or Leaflet as alternatives to Google Maps. Most things can be
solved with open stuff nowadays.

Best,
Silke

Hi, DrTrigon, hi Nux, hi all,

E.g. is it still planned to discontinue the TS? Having 2 payed
admins does not sound like that... - good news?

@DrTrigon:
Please look at the Roadmap at [1]. Yes, the Toolserver will be shut
down next year.
We found amette, the other paid part-time admin, to better share the
high workload of DaB. and nosy. This is not related to shutting down
the server as DaB. said.

What will happen after June 2014? Specifically - what will happen
to any tools and repositories (SVN) that will still be on TS after
that date? Will TS cease to exist, will it be inaccessible, just
databases will be inaccessible or stale or what?

@Nux:
We are still discussing the details of how to proceed after June 2014.
But the bottomline *is* that it will be switched off. Everyone will
have had more than a year to migrate their tools and delete them from
the Toolserver.

Hi, DrTrigon, hi all!

Here are the essentials:

* Please migrate your tools to Tool Labs until June 30th 2014. (Roadmap:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Tool_Labs/Roadmap_en)

* Yes, there are replicas of the databases and many other features. It is
made similar to the login servers on TS.

* Subscribe to labs-l
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/labs-land/or join
#wikimedia-labs on freenode. There are lots of people who will
help you.

* Most tools will just run when you copy them to Tool Labs. Just in case:
Need help adapting a tool? Ask me and I'll do what I can to get you help,
e.g. from my colleague Johannes Kroll.

* If you figure out things that aren't documented, please help others by
writing it down, on-wiki (link below) or on labs-l.

nachvollziehbar.

Silke

2013/5/29 DaB. w...@daniel.baur4.info:
 Hello guys,

I just extended my personal account until 5. January of 2014 – it is the last
time I do this. At this day I will also remove my access as root of the
Toolserver. Beginning of 1. July I will start my fade out, doing less and less
work for the Toolserver until I am not longer visible. I announce that this
early because I think it is fair for you to know that will happen and I like
not just to vanish like some roots before.

There are 4 main factors why I decided to not continue my work until the end
of the Toolserver in December 2014.

Reason 1 is that the Toolserver now has a second paid root and 6 months will
be enough to teach amette and nosy what I know about the Toolserver.

Reason 2 is that there was no real investment in the Toolserver in the first 6
months of 2013 and I very doubt that there will ever be any in the second half
 or beyond.

Reason 3 is that I learned during the last weekend that the support of the
Toolserver in the board of WMDE reached its minimum.
One board-member announced publicly during the general meeting of WMDE that it
is good that there is a timetable for the Toolserver now – I know only 1
timetable for the Toolserver and that’s Silke’s splan of destruction/s
 roadmap for migration [1].
Another board-member told me during a chatting in the halls that ToolLabs (or
the move to) is klasse (~great).
It is impossible to improve the Toolserver against the CEO *and* the board of
 WMDE.

Reason 4 are you, the tool-authors.
The participation in my survey [2] was pitiful low and the majority of these
few who voted, voted to leave the Toolserver as soon as possible or this year
 – a trend that was already visible on the mailing-list before. So I conclude
that the most of you don’t care and whose care will leave this year.
While I asked for documentation (or at least correction) in the toolserver-
wikis for years, nearly nothing ever happened. But now that ToolLabs is on the
horizon you write documentation for THAT – freely.
And it is really a joke to compare the empty new database-servers of ToolLabs
with our old and heavy loaded servers for performance. Let’s see how fast they
are if 10 slow queries, which had run for hours, run in parallel.
With very few exceptions none of you helped to protect the Toolserver against
ToolLabs; all you were interested in was that ToolLabs provides the same
environment so your tools can continue to run there. When I read such phrases
like we have to stabilize the Toolserver until Labs is ready or now we need
the Toolserver for redirects to ToolLabs I could vomit!

I promised in November 2012 that I will stay for another year and I will
fulfill that promise – but not a day longer. There is no point in fighting for
something if the something has already surrendered and no support is there
(not from you, the toolusers, the board of WMDE, the CEO of WMDE or the
 general meeting of WMDE).

These of you who are able to move to ToolLabs I wish luck. Let’s hope that the
WMF does not decide to re-focus again too soon. Let’s hope that the WMF does
not disable tools just because there are a little slow. Let’s hope that the
WMF does not restrict the database-tables even more. Let’s hope that the WMF
does not kick the volunteers out completely some days like they did with the
WMF-wiki-admins some weeks ago. And hoping is all we can do, because the WMF
is a undemocratic construct and ToolLabs is lead by paid roots, so whatever
the WMF staff decides will happen.
Maybe if one of these things happen you will remember the tiny, slow,
unstable, but free Toolserver — but it will not be there anymore.

 Sincerely,
 DaB.

You _don't_ have to care about virtual instances, puppet or any of
this. This is underneath/behind Tool Labs but you can just use the
login server without having to know about it.

 What you get:
 * login server made to resemble the toolserver
 * database replicas from s1-s6, s7 is following in June. Access to all
data you can access as a registered, unprivileged user.
 * possibility to create your own user databases
 * shared project storage, home directories (nfs)
 * possibility to add maintainers to your project via the web interface
 on http://tools.wmflabs.org/
 * possibility to restore your files to the state they were in 1, 2, 3

[Toolserver-l] Status update on Tool Labs

2013-05-27 Thread Silke Meyer
Hello to all tool maintainers!

It was good to see several of you in person this weekend! Faces ftw! :)

Here is a status update with what is now working in Tool Labs:

First of all (looking at DaB.s survey and your comments):
You _don't_ have to care about virtual instances, puppet or any of
this. This is underneath/behind Tool Labs but you can just use the
login server without having to know about it.

What you get:
* login server made to resemble the toolserver
* database replicas from s1-s6, s7 is following in June. Access to all
data you can access as a registered, unprivileged user.
* possibility to create your own user databases
* shared project storage, home directories (nfs)
* possibility to add maintainers to your project via the web interface
on http://tools.wmflabs.org/
* possibility to restore your files to the state they were in 1, 2, 3
hours ago, 1, 2, 3 days ago and on the last 2 Sundays.
* infrastructure to run web services
* job system: OpenGridengine
* two different environments to develop tools in: Tools project

[Toolserver-l] Thoughts and questions to WMDE members about TS and expectations

2013-04-25 Thread Silke Meyer
Dear toolserver crowd, especially dear WMDE members among you!

tldr;
I am asking the WMDE members committed to the toolserver: What can be
a satisfactory state of the server given this strange situation of
transition?

A few thoughts about the current state of the toolserver. This e-mail
is born because I'm not satisfied: I took over the management for this
project at WMDE three months ago. The toolserver's performance is not
better than before (that's my perception). And all I am doing is
reacting to things - though I would like to be in a more active
position. This e-mail is also directed to the WMDE members whom we
promised to improve the toolserver's performance. (For transparence,
this mail is on the public list in English.)

I would like to make some of my thoughts transparent:

First of all, I'm in an awkward situation with contradictory tasks: On
the one hand, I am trying to do things to keep the toolserver running.
On the other hand my job is to set up the roadmap for its abolishment.
The first means to argue for investments into hardware. This entails
to talk about rack space and additional possibilities for power
supply, both of which are at their limits in the data centre. The
second means to propose the date of shutting down the server which is
so close that new investments seem a funny idea. Do we want new
contracts with a data centre we are about to leave next year? Also,
getting hardware there is a lenghty process as the data centre is far
away and physically maintained by others (WMF staff) who don't live
next door to it either. (To clarify: It's *not* that WMDE refuses to
spend the money. I am simply wondering if and how my work makes
sense.)

Secondly: I think that my task is fuzzy: that the toolserver runs
(better). What is that supposed to mean? When is this goal attained?
Has this ever been put in a way that it becomes an accomplishable
task? I refuse to struggle with undefined tasks that I'll never get
done in a satisfying way. I miss a plan! Some might say this is a
community-driven project that doesn't work like this. It develops the
way it develops and planning is impossible. But I have spent quite
some time thinking about questions like these:

* Has there ever been a systematic planning of resources for the toolserver?
* Is there any agreement about growth and limits of the toolserver?
Does it grow with growing demands? I think I implicitly understand the
toolserver is supposed to grow infinitely. This makes it hard to
stabilize the server: We only learn about its growth when the admins
inform us that the system hits its technical limits. (They did inform
us, but the future of the project was unclear already then.)

Thirdly, I have been thinking about how to go on.
* Looking at my own roadmap I think this is the moment to stop the
toolserver from growing. We might rather want to talk about strategies
to improve performance by systematically cleaning up what has moved to
Tool Labs. Or by cleaning up the remains of about 300 inactive
accounts to free space.
* When does the toolserver no longer accept new accounts? Tool Labs
shall be ready in weeks. Once it's there, I think it would be fair to
send new people to Tool Labs right away.

To cut a long story short: I am not sure what you expect me to do in
this situation. Please clarify! I don't want to deal with a task
without a clear task.

Best, Silke

[Toolserver-l] Tool Labs: Summary of Feedback on the Draft for the Roadmap

2013-04-22 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi all!

Let me shortly summarize the comments on the roadmap's discussion pages:
There were no comments about the actual roadmap but feedback
concerning these two topics:

1) What's going to migrate and what isn't?
* Until now, it's not clear which tools will not be able to move. Or
which maintainers might decide not to move and why. People are curious
about this but tool maintainers would have to talk about it for us to
find out.

2) Bad Tool Labs experience:
* How fast is the account creation process right now? A tool
maintainer reported that he spontaneously had some time to think about
migrating. He requested an account but then waited for two weeks to
get it. For people working on tools in their spare time this is too
long.
* Documentation has to be improved! Good overviews are needed as well
as a detailed documentation of everything relevant to working in Tool
Labs.
* An example: You get strange messages and can't find any information
on them, e.g. this one: Your user rights were changed by Andrew
Bogott. You are now a member of this group: shell. Learn more. By
clicking onto it, you get a list of permissions: loginviashell.
There is a red link pointing to Wikitech:Shell. The user is
confused.
* Who is responsible for documentation? (I'm not sure I answered this
correctly: It's not clear to me how much the Tool Labs docs overlap
with general Labs docs and who is responsible for that part. Or is the
Tool Labs documentation isolated from the rest???)

Cheers, Silke

 Hi all!

As you know Wikimedia Deutschland has the mandate to create a roadmap
for the availability of features on Wikimedia Labs / Tool Labs that are
currently available on the Toolserver until the next membership assembly
(May 25th). I have worked on this for the last weeks and now published a
draft. I would like to get your feedback on this draft to make sure it
is sound and nothing vital is missing. The current version is not final
but hopefully very close to what will be presented at the membership
 assembly next month.

The plan has been drafted in close cooperation with the responsible
people at the Wikimedia Foundation. It still needs a final ok from them
 though.

Re: [Toolserver-l] [Labs-l] A (21) day in the Labs

2013-04-10 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi Tim and all,

2013/4/8 Tim Landscheidt t...@tim-landscheidt.de

 Marc A. Pelletier m...@uberbox.org wrote:

  [...]

The database replication is also well on its way; you can find the
  current roadmap at:

  https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tool_Labs/Database_plan

  [...]

 To quote from there:

 | Overview

 | * All public wikis will be replicated to the LabsDB servers,
 | with private user data redacted.

 | * First, data will be replicated to a special set of data-
 | base servers (PreLabsDBDBS) that use triggers to rewrite
 | or remove private data. They will write row based bin-
 | logs. Production shards will map 1:1 with mysql in-
 | stances, unlike on toolserver where some are combined via
 | a custom replication engine.

 | * Triggers will be created with the help of the redactatron
 | schema review tool.

 | * The actual labs databases will replicate from the above
 | mentioned databases. Users will access data via views
 | that only include reviewed tables and columns to ensure
 | that unreviewed tables (such as from a new extension)
 | aren't exposed without prior review.

 | * Replicated data will be stored on flash storage, while
 | each system will have a traditional disk array attached to
 | store labs project data. Users will be able to join
 | project tables against wiki tables, but only within the
 | current shard.

 | * The labs team will integrate these databases with labs,
 | automating database creation and access on a per-project
 | basis.

This means that JOINs for example between wikis and Commons
or Wikidata will not be possible. WTF? One of the stated
goals of Tool Labs is Provide a location for analytics
work, so any changes here should /enhance/ the possibili-
ties the Toolserver offers and not shrink them. This is BTW
one of the top items on the Needed Toolserver features
 list.

We will see into this and find out what is possible to do until when.
You'll hear more about it soon.

[Toolserver-l] List of tools on the toolserver - Help needed

2013-02-18 Thread Silke Meyer
Hey all!

I am impressed! Wondering what tools are actually running on the
toolserver I started a list. It is long! You can admire it here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Toolserver/List_of_Tools

For sure, it is incomplete as I used the toolserver wiki and jira to
find information.

In the light of building Tool Labs to become a platform the tools can
run on, we need more information about the tools. So here is what I ask
all tool developers for:

* Please check if your tools are on the list (correctly).
* Please fill in your software dependencies, data dependencies, use
patterns (are they running continously? or webservices? Batch runs?
etc.), the license.
* If you have not given your software an explicit license, please note
that only free software can migrate to Labs. Consider putting your stuff
under a free license.
* If you have already migrated your bot or tool to Labs and it is in the
list, please say so in the last column status. The same if a mentioned
tool is abandoned and shall not move.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers, Silke

Re: [Toolserver-l] Adding more roots

2013-02-08 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi!

After consultation with WMF, I would like to correct what I wrote the
other day about toolserver admins.
According to Erik Möller, WMF needs all toolserver admins to

 * be identified with their real name;
 * have been individually vetted by WMF operations;
 * have signed a non-disclosure-agreement with the chapter.

Whether someone is actually paid by a chapter is not crucial.
Sorry for the confusion!
Cheers, Silke

Re: [Toolserver-l] Adding more roots

2013-02-05 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi!

DaB is right: WMF as the database owner accepts only paid roots.
As to WMDE, we are ready to pay another root who is willing to work for
WMDE and able to handle the requirements of the toolserver (that you
know better than I do right now). You are welcome to propose people (or
yourselves) or to help specify the requirements for a job advertisement.

I see your point, DaB, the work you would put into instructing a new
person. So another possibility could be to pay an external service
provider to get a bunch of things done in one go to decrease the to do
pile. Which is rather a short-term help and still requires some DaB. For
this, I would need a list of tasks that you, DaB and Marlen, would like
to delegate. Any opinions on this?

Personally, I am new to this topic. At this point, it is hard to tell
how long the transition will take, but if I may roughly estimate I think
the toolserver will realistically NOT leave us in 2013.
Also, I do not consider this as an attempt to increase WMDE's
influence (at least, I am not going to brainwash people ;)) but as part
of our commitment to keep up support of the toolserver.

Cheers,
Silke

[Toolserver-l] Spec for Tool Labs

2013-02-04 Thread Silke Meyer
Hi!

I just united the two existing lists of Toolserver features needed in
Tool Labs and Toolserver features wanted in Tool Labs into one single
page that is here now:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Labs/Toolserver_features_needed_in_Tool_Labs

Quite a few of you already edited it at the end of last year. If you
miss stuff in there, please go ahead and add it!

Cheers,
Silke

[Toolserver-l] Hello! New TS coordinator @ WMDE

2013-02-01 Thread Silke Meyer
Dear Toolserver people!

Hi! I am the new person managing all toolserver issues at Wikimedia
Germany. This means that I am the contact person at WMDE for questions
concerning the current toolserver and I coordinate a small team of WMDE
staff members for the upcoming migration process to WMF Labs.

Wikimedia Germany is going to support the toolserver as long as there is
no alternative ready. I would like to stress that I'll do my best to
help you keep it running until then. Please don't hesitate to contact me
when any problem occurs. I am in touch with DaB and Marlen and I will
help with all I can do at WMDE to reduce failures/the time it takes to
fix them.

As you know, Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on a cloud-based
infrastructure for tools that will - at some point in the nearer future
- have functionalities equivalent to the toolserver. Many parts of it
are up and running, but right now, it is not clear when Labs will have
all the functionalities. Currently, WMDE and WMF are working together to
set up a concrete road map within the next months (until May). Once this
road map or further documentation exist, you'll know it, of course.

When it comes to migrating your stuff, WMF and WMDE staff will support
you as best we can - you saw Sumana's e-mail on this topic recently. I
am looking forward to working with you all!

You'll hear from me again soon and please don't hesitate to contact me
if you have any questions!

Best,
Silke
