Topband: WY and NV - got 'em!

2015-01-24 Thread John Shadle
Thanks to everyone who responded to my call for help. I was able to locate
and work W7SE (WY) this evening using the RBN, and was able to set up a
sked over email with N6ET (NV).

QSOs are uploaded to LoTW and now I wait. :-) I forgot to mention that all
of my QSLs for topband are from LoTW. What a great service that is.

Still looking for KL7 and KH6, but I'm happy to have the "easy" ones in the
log. Time to improve the RX situation. Ha.

Thanks, all!

Re: Topband: 160m WAS (need WY and NV)

2015-01-24 Thread Victor Goncharsky
 Hi Jim,
Thanks for the response. I've wrote a request to both superstations but no
positive response.
Will be trying with KL7KY and WL7E. I was also advised to get in touch with
N7XM and N6ET in NV.
I did it and will start trying with both of them tomorrow at 0430Z. I'm usually
around 3530-3535 KHz depending of QRM.
According to NA reversebeacons, the peak last night was somewhere between
0515-0545
This leaves NE and I'm looking for someone there to try with.
Regarding WAS-160m which will be my ultimate goal for many winters ahead the
LoTW cfm list is below, no California.
US State 160M
Alabama (AL) K4IQJ
Alaska (AK) KL7KY
Delaware (DE) AA1K
Florida (FL) N4IS
Georgia (GA) K4PI
Hawaii (HI) K9FD/KH6
Iowa (IA) W0FLS
Maine (ME) K1UO
Maryland (MD) WA3MEJ
Massachusetts (MA) N1SV
Michigan (MI) N6FS
Minnesota (MN) AE5E
Mississippi (MS) N4OGW
Montana (MT) N9RV
New Jersey (NJ) W2GD
New York (NY) W2CCC
North Carolina (NC) K7BV
Ohio (OH) W8UV
Oregon (OR) N6TR/7
Pennsylvania (PA) NO3M
Rhode Island (RI) K1DT
Texas (TX) W5UN
Virginia (VA) K1HTV

Unfortunately I can't operate on Top Band due to a RF feedback that has
appeared from nowhere this fall. Trying to figure out what has happened but no
luck. Missing EP6...Sorry

2015-01-24 Thread Jim Brown

Hi Victor,

W7RN is a superstation in NV, and quite active in CW and RTTY contests.
KL7RA is a big station, also active in CW and RTTY contests. One problem
working stations at that latitude is the aurora, which can cause them
radio blackouts.

160M from your QTH to the western half of the US is quite difficult. I
have no QSOs from eastern Europe in my log, and I have not heard any EU
stations for three years. I'm near San Francisco with a pretty good
station. I've worked about 20 EU stations on 160M, but all during low
parts of the solar cycle.

For 80M to the western US, try long path around our sunrise. And, of
course, short path around your sunset.

Topband: over confident

2015-01-24 Thread Mark Langenfeld
Yeah, Rick, they often will do that. (I was offered an after-the-fact log
"fix" when XR0ZR copied and apparently repeated my call as WA9EK -- an error I
missed while on the air. But I knew I would never be able to look at that XR0
QSL as "legit," so I said "Thanks; no," and chalked it up to experience.)

Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned and stupid, but I always believed that a
busted call exchange equals a busted Q. This is ham RADIO, and "completing" a
Q via the internet just doesn't seem right to me.

Don't worry, after the DXpedition, you can get them for fix the log
for the busted call. It is advisable to check with the real N1FZ to
make sure he wasn't involved. I often get into pileups with N6RO
or some other similar sounding call and then it isn't so clear about
the busted call thing if he works one of us.

I've only been on 160M for a few years, but am always impressed by the
level of civility and sportsmanship.

It was demonstrated again last evening, during the contest: G5W was
calling CQ beneath W2GD. I called G5W, and W2GD QSY'ed off a bit to let
that QSO happen.

That would likely not happen on any other band.
