I'm hearing what sounds like a stuck Key sending dashes (rate approximately
20 dashes sent in 10 seconds). Does not appear to be a local signal and
heading approximately 90 degrees from Fishers Indiana (which is
near Indianapolis).

Hard to get super accurate heading right now due to Thunder Storms in
Southern US, but definitely close to 90 degrees from me.

Anyone else hearing and please provide heading from your location.

At 0600 UTC it is peaking about S7.

Reminds me of the time I went to investigate audio square waves eminating from
the shack, to find the cat curled up on the log book and key in front of the

That was the first time I saw a cherry-red plate.  :)  The key soon had a
toggle switch in series to ensure stand-by when unattended.

You are not sending your section is the error - or at least the log file
doesnt know to add this. It should be N7WS 599 ( your section) AI7H 599 ID
and so on. I had a similar problem with another contest but I am not
familiar with your logging software so nit sure of a fix but you could run
a find and replace in Notepad searching 'N7WS 599' and replacing with 'N7WS
599 (your section)' and resubmit.

Hope that helps

I operated some S during the ARRL contest. I'm not a contest op but wanted to
give the guys I worked some points, so I tried submitting a check log.

I use DXBase for my logging program so I created an .adif file of the QSOs and
used ADIF2CABR V.3.10 (C) SP7DQR to make a Cabrillo file.

When I submitted I saw in part this:

*ERROR-->*Following QSO errors were found:

 * Sent exchange is missing sec for each QSO

*WARNING-->*Following QSOs were missing required exchange info. You may want to
correct these when you resubmit your log.

 * QSO: 1814 CW 2016-12-03 0611 N7WS 599 AA5B 599 NM

   copied exchange (sec) is missing
 * QSO: 1808 CW 2016-12-04 1307 N7WS 599 AI7H 599 ID

Re: Topband: 1809.2 kHz constant dashes

2016-12-06 Thread Don Kirk
Hi Michael,

Been doing this (plotting on google earth) as each report comes in (which
is what I always do), but since most folks can only provide direction such
as N.W., or West, this provides very poor resolution, and some reports
provide headings that are nowhere close (totally miss the target area by
hundreds of miles). At the moment the majority of the bearings are
crossing in Ohio, and based on what I'm seeing on the plots, it looks like
it's likely on a line South of I-70 as it crosses the state, and probably
more SE (toward West Virginia), than SW of Columbus. Signal strength is
generally useless unless the signal strength is during daylight hours (due
to propagation) and also since most reports are from uncalibrated RX
antenna systems.

Triangulation via bearings is generally the way to go until you get boots
on the ground so to speak with a portable direction finding antenna.

I just got home and don't hear the "dasher", and W1AW is already booming in
this afternoon, so suspect this case is closed. Most likely the problem
has already been discovered by the guilty party.

attribute that to pattern overlap on the vertical RX array. So far this
season we here in the NE area have had very limited and short openings of any

Hi topband lovers

Comments and an heads-up to watch for openings SSE/SSW on 160, 80, and 40m.

This DX season is starting somehow different from last ones. Two weeks ago a
heard BD7PUZ 569 for 15 minutes after my SR (22:30z) on
160m, signal coming
150 degree SSE. It was the first time I heard China on 160m in the evening.

The DSt index is unprecedented high near +20 for few days. DSt will plunge
again soon when we get hit by the arriving G1 magnetic
storm coming. DSt needs to be above +0 for several days for good possibility of
long path,

http://lasp.colorado.edu/space_weather/dsttemerin/dsttemerin.html

This morning WL7E signal was stronger long path 210 degree, also it was the
first time I heard KL7 from 210 degree. Joe signal was
579, real a strong signal ( horizontal polarized) , N4II also using a Waller
Flag heard the same from the Boca Ratoon DX Club.. Joe
mentioned that he worked several Europeans last week pointing antenna toward
Australia, near 210 degree, again the same SSW/SSE
path.

I can say for sure it is difficult to understand why SSW/SSE direction for
almost everywhere you are in the north part planet. PY2RO
is using a Waller Flag and now he tell us how direction long path is arriving
for stations south of the equator.

December 2011 was the best long path propagation day I remember. It seems that
conditions is coming back. I hope more good long
conditions is possible this DX season. JA7QVI Tac also worked long path this
morning but some QSB and a quick shift towards west.
Joe (WL7E) also reported poor condx to Japan this morning, go figure!

We don't understand it ,but enjoy it for sure, Any comments on SSE/SSW are
welcome , this propagation mode is becoming more common.

Does anyone know the reason(s) for ARRL's withholding the approval for
the excellent ET7L operation?

Another unpleasant item is the growing use of remote RXs. It's not
difficult to identify the fakers but does ARRL care?

So...the ARRL does not care. Libertarianism at its best, nothing wrong with
that.

Point taken about this reflector not being the place for this discussion.
End of story for me. :^)

Re: Topband: 1809.2 kHz constant dashes

2016-12-06 Thread Charlie Young

At 1505 UTC, the 1809 kHz dash station is peaking S7 in Charleston WV, well
above the noise on my TX inverted L. There is significant QSB on the signal,
down to S3 or 4, but always above the background noise.

The signal is W/NW from me. The Hi Z triangle does not have enough resolution
but hears the signal better than my bogs. Clearly better on the NW position
than SW or N. The signal seems better on a 280 degree bog than it does on a
330 degree bog but it is close.

I have 4 tx inverted L's, each on a different hill quadrant. In the absence of
power line noise, they hear fairly well. I can usually discern the general
signal direction from listening to these antennas, if the signal is out of the
noise. The NW inverted L is clearly best on the dash signal.

At the moment, 1520 UTC, the signal has taken a significant fade and is only
audible now on the NW inverted L. It has fallen below the noise on the rx
antennas.

Hope this helps.

Signal peaks on SW beverage (245 deg) and 8-circle array aimed SW (245
deg) here in WPA (EN91wr). Slightly more signal on the west than south
directions, so extrapolate slightly more west than 245 deg.

Topband: Long path propagation SSE/SSW

2016-12-06 Thread JC
Hi topband lovers

Comments and an heads-up to watch for openings SSE/SSW on 160, 80, and 40m.

This DX season is starting somehow different from last ones. Two weeks ago a
heard BD7PUZ 569 for 15 minutes after my SR (22:30z) on 160m, signal coming
150 degree SSE. It was the first time I heard China on 160m in the evening.

The DSt index is unprecedented high near +20 for few days. DSt will plunge
again soon when we get hit by the arriving G1 magnetic storm coming. DSt
needs to be above +0 for several days for good possibility of long path,

http://lasp.colorado.edu/space_weather/dsttemerin/dsttemerin.html

This morning WL7E signal was stronger long path 210 degree, also it was the
first time I heard KL7 from 210 degree. Joe signal was 579, real a strong
signal ( horizontal polarized) , N4II also using a Waller Flag heard the
same from the Boca Ratoon DX Club.. Joe mentioned that he worked several
Europeans last week pointing antenna toward Australia, near 210 degree,
again the same SSW/SSE path.

I can say for sure it is difficult to understand why SSW/SSE direction for
almost everywhere you are in the north part planet. PY2RO is using a Waller
Flag and now he tell us how direction long path is arriving for stations
south of the equator.

December 2011 was the best long path propagation day I remember. It seems
that conditions is coming back. I hope more good long conditions is possible
this DX season. JA7QVI Tac also worked long path this morning but some QSB
and a quick shift towards west. Joe (WL7E) also reported poor condx to Japan
this morning, go figure!

We don't understand it ,but enjoy it for sure, Any comments on SSE/SSW are
welcome , this propagation mode is becoming more common.
