Yes. But certainly *some* operators will respect it. If Roger just calls CQ
with no suffix, he's making it harder on himself.

Many poor operators in Europe do not respect an area CQ, especially on CW.
On SSB Many poor operators in Europe wont even respect a DX station when he
calls for a specific prefix or suffix, why would they respect an area CQ ?

What's wrong with calling CQ [AREA]?
e.g.
CQ DX
CQ NA
CQ SA
CQ ...

And if you get called by a EU, just ignore it.

Topband: cqww160 - Night One - not too shabby 148Q's-46 sects -24DX mults

2023-01-28 Thread W3HKK
Noticed what sounded like a below average number of stations on the
air last night. BUT heard a couple dozen Euros on from 2200z-z
which was a pleasant surprise. However, it was very tough to make it
through the European QRM they were hearing. Things got a bit better
later in the evening, but by 0400z most of the Euros were gone even
though SR had not yet passed across Western Europe. But I did manage
20 Euro entities and some Carribs. but no S.A.

KH6AQ came in well around 0400z and again around 1100z. Saw a KL7 spot
around 0400z but not enough to copy. Good numbers of CA stations from
0300z on, but the band had a lot of wide open spaces, unlike a couple
years ago. Still, the QRN was low, and power line noise non-existant.

I was on looking for DX and not to run, so it was slow to moderate
going. Perhaps tonight will be better. I WAS surprised at the number
of Euros heard, considering the recent weeks of dead band

Topband: 160M Conditions - CQWW

2023-01-28 Thread Roger Kennedy

I wouldn't say conditions were GOOD last night, as the NA big guns are
normally several S units stronger over here, but they were OK.

I didn't get home from work til 0330Z last night (doing extra gigs for a
couple of weeks)

But I came on for just over an hour and managed to work 35 NA stations, most
came back first call, so pretty pleased with how I'm getting out.

However, I never call CQ in these contests, as I don't want to waste time
getting called by dozens of EU stations! I heard quite a few other NA
stations, but couldn't call them, as they were working other people . . . if
some of them had put out CQ calls, I expect I could have notched up many
more.

Will be on about the same time tonight to see if there's anyone else on I
haven't already worked.

No, just an error of understanding on my part.  I did a lookup for the
last 36 hours, but the map only plots the last 100 spots, something that
I should have realized but hadn't.  Apologies to everyone.

Context, Pete? Maybe you had some numbers or a graph that were left out?

I thought last night was huge! I was called by gobs of EU. My main
complaint is that most seemed to be sending 35 WPM or higher so I
asked for lots of repeats.

Maybe the high WPM of the EU callers reflects the rough and tumble EU
top and activity?

I am unassisted (for the first time in forever) so can’t look at
reversebeacon till it’s over :-)

This snapshot of RBN spots over the last 36 hours is a little
disappointing.

Is there really an international contest on?

Shucks Pete, that’s propagation for you. I snared 37 DXC in last nights session
from here in Nova Scotia with my K2AV FCP and SAL-20 or new SGA, (Shared Ground
Array) beta version from Mark. Running just 600 watts. Many, many, did I say
many? US stations could not hear the EU DX and plopped on top of them calling
CQ. They must not hear either side of the QSO.

And…it still doesn’t do calling stations any good plopping dead zero beat along
with the horde, the runner cannot separate you, so we tune off freq to catch
the copyable call signs.

That ever happen to you Pete??? Oh well end of rant.

See you tonight and may the Propagation be with you!

Hi Peter

Signals from Europe were not strong but I worked over 50 counties on the
first night. Few days ago Eddy XV1X signal was very good "long path" really
SSW-SSW, CW solid 559, and just yesterday morning several station on the
east coast worked XV1X on FT8. JT1CO is active, BY, HL JA's, 3W1T. most of
traditional contest stations with good signals too.

I think conditions are normal however more CW from Europe than USA, that's
was a surprise for me.
