Re: Topband: T32 on earlier than 10z for W1?

2024-05-10 Thread GEORGE WALLNER

John,
T32JV will not be on tonight. We took down the station to be ready to leave
tomorrow.

But, because of weather, we may stay another weak in which case we will put
it back up again.

I will post if that's the case.

Going 83, I'm now dependent on friends to help me deal with damage to
antennas by winter storms. Branches (and even trees) fall on RX
antennas. The 250 ft Douglas Fir holding one end of three dipoles hit
the ground 18 months ago. We got the most important, an 80/40 fan
broadside JA and SA, back up last fall. The other two have yet to be
rebuilt.

Last night, after dark, I went out to check the 160M TX antenna and
found that the mechanical fuse, which I use to protect it from damage
when trees sway in the wind, had broken, so I didn't get to try to work
George last night. I'll fix it today, and will try if George is still on
tonight.

Re: Topband: End of Season, Spring Cleaning

2024-05-10 Thread David Olean

Hello Dave,

Well, I picked a good year to have my woods logged! I had to remove all
of my beverage wires, so was off the air way back in early December. The
woods have been logged, but it is a mess and needs some grading before I
can start re assembling my 160 system.  The ground never froze very
deep, so the skidder left some pretty mean ruts over 2 ft deep and lots
of churned up mud. At 79+ years I am hopeful that I can re assemble
things before I give up the ghost.  The loggers made mince meat of my
feedlines, so I have to run all new cables. I had some of them in PVC to
prevent animals from chewing them and that was ripped up too. (and I
thought 160 would be easy!!)

Greetings Topbanders. . .

Here at the conclusion of the topband season I have to say it was
right up there with the worst season I've experienced in my three plus
decades on Topband.  Propagation to both Europe and Asia was virtually
non-existent many days.  The only saving grace (at least here in the
Midwest/Iowa) was some decent propagation with our faithful VK friends
who hung in there providing us in NA with QSOs during their summer/QRN
months of the calendar.  Lastly, doing some spring cleaning today I
realized I have a spare DXEngineering 160m four square relay/phasing
box tested and returned from DXE still in the sealed shipping box I'd
like to part with.  If interested please contact me off line.

Hope to see many of you at the Topband Dinner next week.

Re: Topband: T32JV on160 and 80 morning of 5/10

2024-05-10 Thread GEORGE WALLNER

Ron,
TKS for the report. Much appreciated as I am testing a new antenna.

On 80 m I was running 100 W.
Rapid QSB here on most 160 m signals. Also, TS noise.
80 m was solid.
TKS,

George, T32JV, was quite loud this morning on 160. I worked him from here in NC at 1000Z. Pretty easy copy with the array listening NW to escape most of the QRN from the ongoing storms in Georgia. George was not nearly as loud on 3523 when I worked him a few minutes later.

As Dave, W0FLS posted, nice to see some life left in the band. George, you're
RIB certainly works very, very well. Always a strong signal. Thanks for getting
on!

George, mni tnx for bringing 160 cw alive! :)

Hr in Ohio, ur sigs today came out of the noise c. 0930z and peaked
around 1000z at a real 579. And at 1010z u were still true armchair
cpy hr. The skies started to get light c. 1015z and ur sigs
disappeared, though you may have gone QRT.

Station: ACOM amp at 700w + IC7610
Ants:
RX: SAL 30
TX 52 ft vertical leg 1/4 wave INV-L with no radials, just a single 8'
gnd rod. ( My winter set up with 26 x 100 ft radials has recently been
coiled up and are hanging from the walnut tree for mowing season. But
it still seems to work well, as evidenced by our contact today. ( also
an indication that good midwestern soil supports 160m antennas rather
well.)

QRN was S5-9, averaging S7, and you were punching right thru it!

Bon voyage,
