The propagation favored Central America this morning and has brought a new and 
a rare one — HP3AK.
Jay had a nice signal around and after SR here.
The TB season that was very fruitful is moving to an to end so it’s time to put 
the long 50 MHz Yagi up.

I agree as well.
The problem for those chasing new ones is sometimes the fact that folks who 
already worked, confirmed the entity that was accepted by DXCC Desk are still 
calling and often stealing the chance from their fellow amateurs who need that 
DX.
Generally they have the strongest signals and just are competing in their 
Vanity Fair.
Another questionable idea is so called «DX Marathon» requiring to work the same 
entity every year, month, week etc.
As for me, one DX QSO confirmed by QSL card and/or in LoTW and accepted by DXCC 
Desk is enough.
We can work the same stations again and again in all kinds of topband contests 
giving the points and multipliers to those who need them.

Anton,
Almost all YBs on 160m are working FT8.
Worked  YB1TJ, YB2DX, YF5RFU, YB9AY, YB1BA, YB4IR.
The only CW QSO was in 2013 with YC0LOW (SK)

I use Russian B1B vacuum relays for all RF switching, for high power 160m 
switching B2B vacuum relays are recommended. Hope you can get them there.

Re: Topband: Morning (W6 time) opening to European Russian today at ~1300Z during ARRL contest

Certainly the skip has favored Northern paths for the last several days.
We worked three Alaska stations since Friday - NL7S and KL7J on FT8 and KL7SB 
on CW in the contest.
With only one CW QSO in KL7KY in 2013 it was an amazing adventure. KL7 was a 
new one for Helen!
Hawaii was not that easy but managed to get  KH6/KU1CW in contest and K9FD on 
FT8, well done Merv!
Tried to get the remaining States during the contest weekend, succeeded with 
Wyoming but had not enough RF to get W0SD and K5HK.
Anyway the beginning of this season is quite promising.

Just a short story for this FT-8 vs CW/SSB discussion.
We, with Helen UR5WA, have been waiting for QSL card from VR2XAN for 160m QSOs 
in CQWWCW 2017.
Two direct requests both with IRC and $$$ have been sent but no answer.
Tried some Italian assistance - same result.
So the obvious decision was to give FT8 a try.
This resulted in VR2KW QSOs and the next day LoTW confirmation.
We have no interest nor intention to apply for Digital DXCC, but if there's no 
other option we'll work new ones on FT8.  "The world is changed".

This is not always the case. I have noticed long openings to Caribbean during 
last year 6m season with signal levels good enough for reliable CW QSOs but 
only FT8 portion of the band was alive.
Will see what will happen this year. Top band game is almost over with the last 
3 new ones worked in April (but missed XR0) so 6m antenna is on its way to the 
tower this week.

Re: Topband: finding a site for greyline sunrise/sunset times

The special site or software are not needed. 
The contest loggers,, TR4W in our case, show the SR/SS times after the prefix 
is typed into the callsogn window. For sure most of the general QSO loggers 
have this option.

HI folks,
I've problems with TOR browser in Ubuntu 16 so could not read mail.ru emails 
blocked by UR government, including the ones from this reflector for quite a 
long time. The problem has been solved.
As you probably know the licensing authority in Czech Republic started to 
reissue the old 2X2 calls and many 2X3 owners have been changing their calls. 
My assumption is that this OK1YQ could be the case or simply a computer error 
at ARRL Hq.

And the scandal is again initiated by a well known scandalist UY0ZG, who was 
expelled from Ukrainian Contest club, Black Sea Contest club and was a major 
factor that has resulted in the recent problems inside Ukrainian Ham Radio 
community that resulted in creation of alternative NGO-VRL amateur organization.

Aside from intrigues this guy loves to blame Ukrainian Hams of "not having 
receivers". For years his "victims" were US8ICM, UY5AA, US2WU, myself and many

Back to the DX discussion - 3C0W was strong in the middle of the nigh but no 
sigh of TN5R.

four simultaneous African DXPeditions 3C, TJ, TN and TY. Therefore some 
coordination between team leaders is needed. The good example of almost perfect 
solution was VK0/FT4J case.

Last night they were weaker here in Eastern EU then the two previous days.
Have the country confirmed so didn't call.
Possibly future DX peditions will use the alternative RX antenna approach not 
to feed locals with cupper wires.
Fortunately, pingwins don't steal wires so hopefully the Bouvet beverages will 
be safe.

Thank you Manoj, it was more then hard but we did it!

I was running a WEBSDR under Ubuntu16 on 6 meters myself to control the quality 
of my signal especially on JT65 so I know the technology from the inside.
If someone does not want anyone from outside the local area to use his WEBSDR 
he can easily put the GEO-IP filtered access on. 
Instead, we see the private correspondence being made public.
I was lucky to earn DXCC HR#1 long before new computer technologies started to 
dominate the hobby so just having fun nowadays.

There's no exclusive frequency for FT8 or any other K1JT mode.
Therefore using CW on any frequency is absolutely legal.

JT modes were originally designed for VHF (59 MHz and up).
No reason to use them on HF and especially on Top Band.
We will not pay attention to those playing the childish FT8 toys on HF.
3C0L showed us the proper way.

HI Stein,
What my good old friend Saulius wants to say is that there's no chance to work 
TZ4AM from here in Central Europe unless one has 10 kW and at least full size 
vertical. I'm personally not paying attention to both RBN and cluster 160m 
TZ4AM spots anymore. 
On the other hand, we have worked Jeff on other bands including 6 meters 
without any problem.

Talking about Africa, since 2013, when I came back to 160m, the following 
countries from that area have been easily worked:
3X, 5N, 5T, 5U, 5V, 6W, 9G, S0, TU, XT2 so African noise is not a major factor.
Finally, the skip can not be "wrong" day by day and month by month.
Occam's razor cuts this assumption off.

Raoul,
Tonight there was the usual TZ4AM's multi CQ with no response. Made a few calls 
as need TZ on top but no answer. At the moment running 900w and 27.5m top hat 
vertical so barefoot/dipole is not the case here. 
Never had problems working that part of Africa, the only one missed last year 
was TY2AC (we were out of the country at that time) but Nickolas has promised 
to show up on 160 this season.   
So the quesion is - how much power do I need to work Jeff? Will 5K be enough?

Wrong.
Both in SSB and AM cases the operator's skills and abilities are involved.
Even more of those are needed on CW.
On those JT modes an operator is just a computer accessory.

Topband: K3 remote power switching

Dear friends,
I am using K3 for remote operation. Recently we experience the increase  of 
power failures here in Ukraine.
Despite of having 7AH battery as a PS buffer, sometimes when the electricity is 
off for a long time, K3 is switched OFF.
This requires the trip to the remote site.
Is there an easy way to remotely switch K3 on and OFF through the serial port? 
Does a software exists that is dealing with this.

I was trying to find the K3 menu item that will enable switching K3 back ON 
when electricity is restored (like in all computer motherboards)  but could not.
Would appreciate the assistance.

ET7L issue has nothing to do with remote operation. It was from Ethiopia 
authorised by local officials.
The reason for not recognising it has nothing to do with ham radio.
SV2RSG is another example.

Being asked by ET7L crew, I have personally sent the scanned documents to ARRL 
Hq on on June 30!
This includes their ham license which, actually, is the part of their work 
permit-agreement issued by the Ministery which is, as I understand, is powerful 
enough to authorise ham radio operation from ET.
The ET7L crew, in fact has been trying to get in touch with ARRL on the matter 
in July, but got no response from Newington, their QSL manager US0LW said.
Frankly, this situation reminds me the 7O1YGF one.
