Topband: Working Dupes on a Band
Fellow Topbanders: Sometimes I hear a DX station calling CQ and no one else calling. I think it is good practice to let them know they are getting out, no matter how many times I have logged them before. I believe this is common courtesy to let the DX station know he/she is being heard. 73, George, K8GG _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Re: Topband: Working dupes on a band
Hi Roger Agree 100%. Also for me ,,,FT8 and JT65 is NOT a Ham radio QSO.As I see it. Its computer talking to a computer without human help. NEVER from me either. BUT these people that enjoy FT8 aso and remote stations from each side of big countries like USA and Russia, they can of course do so. They enjoy it and thats that. 73 and lets go for a QSO when you hear at least the one you work. Re: Topband: Working dupes on a band
Actually, there is QRM. In fact I gave up FT8 after about a hundred Qs after trying to work a nameless west African who started getting clobbered mid QSO. I just kept repeating reports hoping that the QRM would compete and move, when up popped JTAlert with a message to the effect that my QSO partner had sent a text message saying that he had my reports and I should just send RRR to complete the "contact." At that point I turned off the radio and uninstalled WSJT-X. I am in the process of building my first ever BOG (NE/SW) and hope to be more active on 160. Wednesdays right after the 0300Z CWT's are perfect, since I end CWT's on 160 anyhow. This is the first season I've attacked my "160 problem" and started getting new countries on CW. And even developed a ragchew friend on 1810. 73, WT2P On 2/1/2018 5:43 PM, Roger Kennedy wrote: Sorry Jay . . . but not in a million years ! That's exactly what I wanted to get away from . . . If you are a DX station please call me no matter how many times we have worked before. Its nice to know the band is open and that I am not calling CQ into a dark void. Yes the RBN helps but there is no replacement for a real contact. Topband: Working dupes on a band
It would be a very boring hobby if you only ever worked a given station ONCE . . . To me, the hobby is all about having regular contacts - it's how you make friends ! And that's the same whether it's locals or DX stations. Also one of the reasons 160m has always been my main activity (for the past 48 years) is that I've always found it the friendliest of all the bands, and certainly the best-behaved. I guess there are SOME people who are only interested in collecting new prefixes, and having a quick QSO to achieve that. Well that's never interested me . . . I just find that really boring ! Having lots of contacts with people a long way away on 160m is what gives me a buzz ! Topband: Working dupes on a band
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with working the same station on the same band more than once. We used to do it all the time to assure we had "insurance" contacts with someone we needed for DXCC or other award. Online logs and ClubLog has limited that need to some extent, but not everyone has a near-real time log we can check. Now, with the advent of the CQ Magazine's Annual DX Marathon, There is no choice but to work the same stations EVERY year to achieve the CQ zone and Country totals for the year long Marathon. I always hesitate to work the tough ones in a big pile-up if I have them confirmed for DXCC, because I do not want to take the opportunity away from someone who needs them for a new band country. HOWEVER, I do try to work them eventually, usually when the propagation favors my QTH, so I can add them to my totals for the year. If stations cannot understand that, they should get with the program... They could be in demand by everyone every year ! That should be something to look forward to - being in demand ! I know this is different than thinking in the past, but that is the reality of today ! I already have 60+ DXCC on 160 in January 2018 alone 8^) 73, PeteR N8PR From: rayn6vr In my mind, the station you are talking about is very inconsiderate and lacking poor judgement. A lot of times I do not have my PC up and running in the morning before work;? if I make a contact I just enter it as memo on my phone and enter it into the actual log when I get back from work.?? Working these ?No Dupe? guys really doesn?t worry me per se,? but if I?m trying to work them and they decide not to respond as I?m a ?dupe?,? then it wastes my time to do so. ? Last night there were some nice EU sigs on TB and I worked several of them (all ?repeats? but they didn?t seem to care). 73 Mark K3MSB I personally will come on tonight about Z . . . usually for about an hour . . . and then again about 0300Z, to see if there's stations further west. (there seems no point in coming on at our Sunrise, around 0730, as there is actually NO peak in signal these days) Roger G3YRO _ From: Mark K3MSB [mailto:mark.k3...@gmail.com] Subject: Re: Topband: 160m DX Activity Night So what's the accepted practice of working stations again and again on 160M? If I've worked you once or twice in the past I won't answer your CQ, unless you're CQing with no responses, but then probably not. I've found in the past that ops don't want repeat customers, they want fresh fish. I've been doing other thingsin the shack and have heard EU stations CQing and CQing on TB but I don't answer as they're in my log quite a few times. Should I answer? 73 Mark K3MSB ** _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
